The 5 core product lines I would like to see in 5e...

Hi guys, first off I'd just like to say that I thoroughly love what WotC have done with 5e so far and most the people I have spoken with have echoed similar sentiments. I know there are some very vocal, negative voices on these forums but at least from I've encountered these noisy few do not represent the general consensus.

I just wanted to sound off on what I think would be a good way to carry the core brand forward and see what others think.

So here goes...

It's been identified that consumers don't seem to want Splat books (whether you're only including power-creep ones or otherwise) so I would like to see Adventure Paths like Tyranny of Dragons and Elemental Evil that continue to add new player options, magic items and monsters. This is a mixture of actual content and new mechanics. Great, in my opinion that's where the future of 5e lies.

Next I'd also like to see Setting Guides that add a huge amount of detail and depth to the world but at the same time add additional new content and new mechanics, once again consumers recieve a great mixture of content to enjoy and also fresh mechanics. For example the core PHB adds very common/generic/setting-neutral races and classes - this would be the place to add some races, classes, specialisations, backgrounds, etc that ONLY truly fit in FR, or whatever setting they pick.

All the new rules should be made available as part of free .PDF's as has been done so far, however every few years they should release a full hard-back book of all the additional rules and character options that have been added in Adventure Paths and Setting Guides so that anyone who desperately wants these collected/collated in one single tome has the option of doing so without needing to gather dozens of .PDFs or dig through a dozen other books. ALL OF THIS INFO WOULD BE FREE ELSEWHERE, so all you are paying for is convenience, new fluff/flavour text and some pretty pictures. Since this would be so optional and completely unnnecessary as a purchase I don't think many people would have a problem with its existence.

Additionally they should release Modules that are shorter, self-contained adventures. These should/would NEVER contain new rules as the only reason a consumer should feel they have to buy them is for ideas or to run the adventure.

Lastly, a new book every few years that is a Dungeon Master's Toolkit - this would replace new editions of the DMG and MM moving forward so that it would be mostly new monsters, a bunch of new magical items, and then a host more optional rules and other interesting ideas to bring into your game.

So in short...

  • Adventure Paths - content and rules/mechanics.
  • Setting Guides - fluff and rules/mechanics.
  • Compendums/Collections - all the rules/mechanics added through Adventure Paths and Setting Guides.
  • Modules - just content.
  • Dungeon Master's Toolkit - new monsters, spells, magic items, optional rules, etc.

I realise this sounds like a lot but you're only looking at (hopefully) 2 APs per year, 1 setting guide every 2-3 years, 1 Compendum/Collection every 2-3 years, 3 modules a year, 1 Dungeon Master Toolkit every 1-2 years. It's still not an overwhelming amount of releases, but to my mind, enough.

What do you think?

I would like to see more player settings. I like the small clean look of the unearth arcana: ebberon. I hope to see a couple of these a year. Specificly darksun and dragonlance hopefully soon.

I really enjoy what is going on thus far but there are a couple Splat Books I would like to see.

1.Monster Manual 2. I'm under the assumption we will get one of these anyway. I'd just prefer it sooner rather than later. as a preference I think any new player races could be included in with this book as well. I'm not talking the ones from the EE Players Companion but newer ones that have been play-tested. Like the Eberron races, but also Gith, Hobgoblins, Revenants, etc.

2. I'd love to see a new Arms & Equipment Guide. New "Martial Builds"  could be included plus more on firearms and siege equipment, ships, and of course an exhaustive list of the magic items that have appears over the years and all of the artifacts too.

3. Book of Magic. Spells, spells and more spells. Plus the builds for Magic and Divine classes.

At some point I'd love a psionics book but really more in the vain of Occult Adventures that Paizo is putting out(I want it for a new Ravenloft campaign) I'm not a huge fan of the Sci-FI style of Psi that usually appears in DnD...

Just my wishlist...

Actually I only want a campaign setting. I don't have any at the moment to even convert over so just a book with a map and details of towns, NPC, etc. I don't require any new options or rules either. Just one setting book.

The third edition Forgotten Realms books are still great for fluff and campaign ideas, but I agree that 5th edition setting books updated to the current timeline post Spellplague / Sundering would be a great addition.

I really don't know what I would like to see. Of the top of my head I would say I would like to see a second Monster Manual and a new Fiend Folio as well as a Tome of Magic like book for expanded spells. A new Arms & Equipment Guide would also be welcome as would an update to the core settings (FR, Greyhawk, Dragonlance and Eberron). However, I do not want to see a rushed schedule of splatbooks and the old supplement-of-the-month way of doing things back.

For some of this I did notice that Frog God/Necromancer has put some books out and I have looked at maybe getting them. However, I just now converted to 5e so I am not looking too far beyond core at this moment. Whatever WOTC does I hope they time things so that there is not a glut of material to deal with soon.
