The Draconomicon 3: Catastrophic Dragons Speculation Thread

Alright, so out of all the dragons in D&D 4e so far, I'd have to say that Catastrophic Dragons are my favorites. I'm not quite sure what it is; their dynamic auras, the way its easier to fit them in encounters, the fact that they feel different than any other dragon in 4e so far... maybe its all of these, maybe its none.

Anyways, its likely that they'll get a sourcebook that details and expands on them, like Chromatic and Metallics did before. So, what do you think will be in Draconomicon 3?

I guess a first thing would be to guess at what other kinds of Catastrophic Dragons there will be. Since they seem to be based off of natural disasters like Volcanos, Blizzards, and Earthquakes, I'd say that these would be pretty safe guesses:

- Tsunami Dragons
- Hurricane Dragons
- Meteor Dragons
- Sandstorm Dragons

I am actually really worried about the fate of Hardcover books like Draconomicon, a future book on Devils and that sort of thing. Given we haven't got much of an announced product list after essentials and so many things becoming a softcover book, I am really getting worried we're not going to get more of these books

Edit: On topic though and less whiny, I think Tsunami and Typhoon dragons were both mentioned in MM3.

I think the lack of upcoming books has more to do with the release of the Essential line more than anything.  I think they want to focus on that rather than muddy the waters with too much at the same time.

Typhoon Dragons were mentioned alongside Earthquake Dragons in the MM1, so they at least will appear.

I suspect (and hope) as much as well.  I suspect they want people to remain concentrated on Essentials at least until it starts getting released.

Then after that they can update us on all of the other books coming out, and get everyone all excited again.

But Essentials don't look too interesting to experience gamers. Unless I am completely wrong.

I will be getting the rules compendium and the monster vault (which updates many monsters to both the new stat block and new design of creatures post MM3, that makes it worth while just for that alone).

But otherwise I have to concede essentials is not *for* me.

I'll probably be saving a lot of money on the essentials line. My buddy plans on buying the set for his little brother and sister. So I'll get a chance to look at them and decide if they're useful to me. But I have no fear for future products. Wotc isn't done giving us books by a long shot.

It isn't necessarily aimed at people playing the game now.  It is aimed at people new to D&D or those that did not come back when 4th came out for whatever reasons.  The new format will hopefully draw more people to the game as they are modelling it on the earlier boxed sets.  Whether or not this pans out we will see.  I am looking at getting the set for my son so i am looking forward to it.

All things considered, I wish they had done with demons and devils what they did with Dragons.

One book called demons, and one book called devils, and not wasted so much print space in the monster manuals on them.

Not that I don't like them in the monster manuals, but, once you remove the demon devil section from MM3, you have damn near nothing worth mention. Maybe if MM3 had more useful monsters it wouldn't look so lame (I clearly think it looks lame).

Not sure they have enough content yet for a 3rd dragon book yet though.

Yup, the new Draconomicon should include more than just a few new dragons. Maybe it will be a catastrophic/scourge dragon book (if those are still to be made).
I'd love a hardcover, neatly organized Codex of Betrayal.

A meteor Catastrophe dragon is going to be a major villian in my next campaign.  He'll be the lynch pin to unleashing an Allabar type end gamer and eventually the thing that brings him near "earth".

You mean like a Demonomicon?

Where is my Eclipse Dragon?

I put it there because of the cliched image of uncivilized tribes seeing the sun's dissappearance as a bad omen or a catastrophe of sorts.

Sig. No one understands me... lol

That would be awesome. I could see an Eclipse Dragon having an aura that grants it concealment, with its full-power aura effect being an attack that blinds everyone caught in it.

Eclipse sounds more like a Planar Dragon from the Astral Sea.

…Maybe it's the Golden Sun influence, though…

There's another angle to look at this from, I think. Each Catastrophic Dragon's aura causes a debilitating effect, followed up by an even worse effect when the aura reaches full power. So, let's look at the effects we've seen so far:

- Sliding, which ends in immobilization (Blizzard)
- Knocking Prone, which ends in making it harder to stand up (Earthquake)
- Automatic Damage, which ends with Ongoing damage (Volcanic)

Here are a few predictions for auras:

- Concealing, which ends with Blindness (Eclipse, or possibly Sandstorm)
- Slowing, which ends with immobilization/restraining (Flood)
- Pushing, which ends with knocking prone and deafening (Typhoon)

I'm not sure we'll get a Draconomicon 3 book that is just about catastrophe dragons.  My guess is that they'll wait until scourge dragons (linnorms) are released and consolidate the two together or you'll see them expanded upon in Dungeon.

I'm not entirely sure about that - I'm still not sure which route they'll go.  Currently, we've got a Draconimicon per dragon variety, and keeping with that pattern, catastrophic dragons should get their own book.  But on the other hand, chromatics and metallics have more of a legacy to expand upon, so they provide more to start with for a Draconimicon.  Plus catastrophic and scourge dragons are thematically linked: draconic incarnations of woe (disaster or plague, respectively).

Mostly, I just wish we'd get to linnorms already.  They've been alluded to since the very beginning of 4e, but we haven't seen them yet.  I also want to see the return of gem dragons and Sardior.  They may not have the same history, but I had good stories involving the gem dragons.  And I still find the amethyst dragon's breath weapon iconic - spitting an explosive gemstone.  Although WotC has never (to my knowledge) even hinted that they might be bringing back the gem dragons, I have high hopes of them having a place within 4e.  I think their story could be refitted to suit the Points of Light in a new and interesting way.  How exactly, I'm not entirely sure - instinct isn't quite telling me the idea yet.  But if I stew on it for a while, I may have an answer.

Personally, I don't think that we'll see gem dragons return to 4e as a separate species of dragon.  Given that they're one of the few groups of iconic psionic creatures that are not abberations, I can see the possibility of them returning, most likely under that catch-all category of planar dragon.

Well, that's still a form of returning gem dragons.  I could cope with that.

So metalic dragons have Bahamut, the Platinum Dragon.

Chromatic dragons have Tiamat (the Rainbow dragon?).

Gem dragons have Sardior, the Ruby dragon (to me he is the Diamond dragon).

So what is the patron god of Catastrophe dragons? The Doomsday dragon? The Apocalypse dragon?

Considering that the Catastrophic Dragons were willingly morphed into what they are by the Primordials, my guess is that they don't have a patron god.]

Some of the primordials that warped them are still around though and can serve an identical function

Not everything needs a god to begin with anyway.

I think the state of the FR shows the folly in that logic that gods improve things :P

There was an article a ways back that mentioned an "Apocalypse" dragon named Nabiru, it was apparently a catastrophic dragon that became too old and powerful, so the gods locked it in some weird meteor filled with failed civilizations.

It sounds similar to how primordials are locked away.

Perhaps Catastrophics don't have a god, they have a primordial.

Frankly, I love Catastrophic, Gem, and hopefuly Planar dragons because they actually have alot to differentiate them beyond color and alignment (and in 4th, Chromatics and Metalics are barely seperated by that even).
