| #1The-Magic-SwordFeb 22, 2011 22:48:27 | Hey, so what monsters are you guys hoping will make their way into future Monster offerings (if they exist of course)? I'm personally not really sure what's left to go over in terms of monsters, though it would be interesting to see the return of more odd early DND monsters, and now that i think about it a few more types of intelligent dragonspawn might be nice to have, the type that would be more likely to serve dragons. Draconians would be nice, but they would probably be statted out if Dragonlance ever happened in 4E so... yeah |
| #2mercaiusFeb 22, 2011 23:37:18 | Not to speak off-track, but they did introduce draconians again, in the Draconomicon: Metallic Dragons book. |
| #3sfdragonFeb 23, 2011 0:05:27 | the next MM of 4e ( regardless of what its called) I hope doesnt have repeat monsters from the previous 4e MMs. I Hate that.... |
| #4KalnaurFeb 23, 2011 0:51:34 | the next MM of 4e ( regardless of what its called) I hope doesnt have repeat monsters from the previous 4e MMs. What repeats? Do you mean "totally different stat blocks for a single theme of monster such as drow or goblins"? Because I really really like that and hope they do that more. For example, I would not argue against a few more displacer beasts. |
| #5incenjucarFeb 23, 2011 2:26:53 | There are an absurd number of old monsters to bring in from past editions which will of course be used. Personally I'm hoping for a lot more non-dragon magical beasts. The game has far too much emphasis on race wars. |
| #6sfdragonFeb 23, 2011 7:50:01 | the next MM of 4e ( regardless of what its called) I hope doesnt have repeat monsters from the previous 4e MMs. new variants should of been placed under variants with no art..... |
| #7The-Magic-SwordFeb 23, 2011 11:30:45 | Not to speak off-track, but they did introduce draconians again, in the Draconomicon: Metallic Dragons book. heh, whoops... thanks for the heads-up @Incen: i wasn't around for earlier editions, what sorts of monsters haven't we seen yet that already exist in past versions? |
| #8incenjucarFeb 23, 2011 16:31:46 |
I couldn't hope to go over 30 years of monsters in detail here, but this should give you an idea of how many books they could fill, especially now that they give multiple versions of many monsters: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lists_of_Dungeons_... |
| #9HoundstoothFeb 24, 2011 2:21:13 | I like the direction they are taking with the Threats to the Nethril Vale Monster Vault. They are not giving creatures in alphabetical, but they are going through organizations, groups and gangs. So if a bunch of kobolds are working with a Green Dragon, they would be featured together. I like that because it should come with a good amount of fluff, and for those of us who don't have time for ongoing champaigns a monster manual designed like this takes a lot of time out of prep, and its a fun presentation variation. |
| #10pogminkyFeb 25, 2011 2:54:35 | We've got so many monsters already - once you're comfortable re-skinning or tweaking with 'em you've got zillions of cool monsties ... That said, I'm a glutton for critters so in future monster sets I'd like to see: More pogs! ![]() More ecology-of style articles amidst the crunch More hazards/traps and usable terrain Animated furniture More fell-taints More creepy-crawlies Beastfolk/Catfolk Merfolk/Tritons - more aquatic stuff like jellyfish, sharks, etc. Horror-themed creatures apart from undead A few old-school weirdies (anyone else consider using the ones from that April Fool's Witchalok special?) And, of course, entirely new stuff! ![]() |
| #11dad_gumFeb 27, 2011 1:03:15 | I agree pogminky. Of courese I use the Monster Builder a lot and have created many of my own, but it would be nice to see a lot more of the underwater world as well as horror. Things that are dark and spooky and go bump in the night but are not undead. Otherwise, I think the only avenue left open is more natural creatures. |
| #12KalaniFeb 27, 2011 11:26:35 | They could just as easily release a Box set of Pogs - 2+ of every monster printed in 4E as well as 4+ pogs for every PH race (2 of each gender - dressed in appropriate garb, inc. one generic spellcaster pog/race). Id certainly buy such a product (or products if the PH pogs are separated into a different product). |
| #13ah_stormbringerFeb 27, 2011 11:35:20 | good idea. |
| #14pogminkyFeb 27, 2011 12:48:02 | Yes - pogs are cheap functional alternatives to minis for those with less cash. I want more! ![]() |
| #15lokiareFeb 27, 2011 14:45:02 | I'd rather see cardboard cutouts, or flat plastic stands with stickers depicting the monsters and characters on them... |
| #16GhostStepperFeb 27, 2011 15:06:36 | I'd rather see cardboard cutouts, or flat plastic stands with stickers depicting the monsters and characters on them... How about little plastic holders that would allow existing pogs to stand upright? |
| #17echosaveFeb 27, 2011 15:22:31 | I as well appreciate the value of the cardboard "pog"-style tokens released so far. While miniatures are often amazing, tokens are cheaper, easier to store and maintain, are not as heavy, and you can own literally hundreds for just a few dollars - letting you build any kind of encounter you can think of in just a few moments with the right token. I fully support a move by WotC to release more monster/NPC tokens with any future Monster XXX splatbooks. |
| #18pogminkyFeb 28, 2011 5:17:32 | The good thing about having flat pogs rather than stand-up ones is that you can flip them to show bloodied and you can use expansion rings to make any critter large/huge/gargantuan etc. |
| #19lokiareFeb 28, 2011 13:35:47 | The good thing about having flat pogs rather than stand-up ones is that you can flip them to show bloodied and you can use expansion rings to make any critter large/huge/gargantuan etc. And the bad thing is you can't tell what they are half the time... |
| #20pogminkyFeb 28, 2011 14:09:54 | Yeah ... some of the MV ones weren't the greatest in the functional artwork department .... ![]() But most seem ok. It's difficult to get everything we'd want in a pog (that sounds like a song ....) |
| #21alitainFeb 28, 2011 17:58:17 | Well it does and doesn't fall in to the MM category but I want more Catastrophic Dragons. I have yet to play in a game where they're used, but I enjoyed the concept of them and was severely dissappointed that there were only 3 in MM 3. They either need a third Draconomicon or to at least put a couple more in another MM book. Aside from that I'd like to see more new monster, and less PC races monster blocks. And I was kind of annoyed that MM3 seemed to have several races that were just corrupt gnomes, dwarves, etc. New races, not just gnomes that were corrupted by the abyss, or some monster, or whatnot. |
| #22mysticbelmontFeb 28, 2011 20:02:15 | I would love to see the "Beast of Malar" as it is one of my favorites. |

| #24The-Magic-SwordFeb 28, 2011 22:19:53 | Catstrophic dragons are rather cool- though- asian/serpent esque dragons being included would be interesting , simply because they're so different then the other types. Like, Lung Dragons- we never tend to see very many in DND. |
| #25cool_guyMar 01, 2011 1:20:17 | I just want better ways of making werewolf and other were type monster. I though of an adventure where the city is being invaded by amry of werewolfs and other were monsters. the heros don't fight them they run form them and try to get their friends out. and in the end a massive ritual truns the city into a forest. But I can't run it with the way were monster a handle now. I would need some kind of monster themes |

| #27The_JesterMar 01, 2011 10:02:33 | Given how crazy easy it is to reflavour monsters into something unrecognisable, do we really need any new monsters? I already have more than I will ever use. And once we have a solid monster builder that can mix-and-match powers, we'll have something very close to an inifinite number of monsters without even making new powers. That said, there are still a few monsters that have not been updated from 3.5 or earlier. And we've seen no aquatic monsters at all. |
| #28ah_stormbringerMar 01, 2011 13:30:58 | The only problem with that jester is that some people do not have access to the MB and they should not be forced to get it just so they can get new monsters. |
| #29drnickMar 01, 2011 15:09:06 | Given how crazy easy it is to reflavour monsters into something unrecognisable, do we really need any new monsters? I already have more than I will ever use. True, but I'm constantly surprised by clever mechanics when I flip through a monster manual. Just because it's possible to stop now doesn't mean there isn't a benefit to releasing more. |
| #30KalnaurMar 01, 2011 15:27:08 | Given how crazy easy it is to reflavour monsters into something unrecognisable, do we really need any new monsters? I already have more than I will ever use. It's not like I can't make my own monsters from the ground up (I am, in fact, creating classic Final Fantasy monsters/bosses currently). However, I really enjoy monsters, and generally would buy any hardcover book with more monsters. That includes if the digest books were hardback. Mainly, I want rulesbooks I will not destroy in a month of hard use. Other than that, bring on the monsters! I just want better ways of making werewolf and other were type monster. I though of an adventure where the city is being invaded by amry of werewolfs and other were monsters. the heros don't fight them they run form them and try to get their friends out. and in the end a massive ritual truns the city into a forest. A were theme could be interesting. Not sure how they would swing it. But honestly? The situation you present sounds like a combination of skill challenge and encounter build. Every failed check is a fight with were beasts. The encounters would probably be between a standard level one, and a level + 2 one. Every success gets them further out of the city, or saves another friend. The skill check would be a level 5 complexity, with the "bonus rolls" adding back a failure. Total failure of the skill challenge would mean that the party must fight the Alpha. Defeating the Alpha causes the other werethings to retreat, and the party escapes with the city with a few "friend" casualties. Loosing to the Alpha could be a TPK, or all the "friends" dying and the PCs being infected with lycanthropy (I smell a major quest to remove lycanthropy!). |
| #31sfdragonMar 01, 2011 17:39:08 | I would have prefered a moneter manual with the monsters in it, with their basic racial abilities and a number indicating how many powers it could have from a cr 1 to a cr 20 rating. and have additional monster powers listed in the back of the book. would it of been better?? welll can't say..... |
