The Silliness of Release Dates: PHB2 out in Japan?

*mumblegrumble* PHB2 out in Japan thanks to Amazon.jp. Honestly, the books are done WotC, why don't you just release them? I hate this street date nonsense.

Behold.

So answer me this...why does places like Japan or Germany get their copies of the book weeks before the US? I mean, really, it seems silly. It's just asking for someone to scan/pirate copies of the book. People don't like waiting in this media on demand world.

Yeah, because Americans are so much more honourable when it comes to not pirating books and other media. Wow.

WTF???? Okay, so can't you just buy this damn thing in PDF format, like every other book?? And if so, WHY CAN'T I JUST BUY IT NOW IN ENGLISH?!?!?! Jesus! Japan already gets every good Video Game months (or ****ing YEARS!!) earlier, why are they getting AMERICAN-made products weeks faster as well?!?!?!?!

I'm guessing that the book was printed a month or so ago. Got sent to the distributor and the distributor didn't want to sit on the product. They said 'damn this street date nonsense", or just don't care because they control the shipping and sent it to Amazon early. Amazon being Amazon doesn't care about street dates at all. Bing, bang, boom, Japan gets it early. But, I'd be guessing. Not really Japan's fault. I'm really only peeved that companies like WoTC have to set arbitrary street dates that never are honored and don't just release it when it done and move on.

Or 3. Or half the Langrisser series. Or the original Shin Megaten. Or..shall I go on? I really want to see if Crimson is going to explode. I wish Super Robot Wars (other than OG) would hit the states, but copyright laws make that unlikely. But as I said, I don't blame Japan. I blame....eh, the Man. That's it. The Man. Second are probably whether they changed much on the Barbarian, and what Thaneblood is.

yea luckily some awesome fans translated mother 3 into english finally. I hope WotC staff posts on here soon so we can get an answer. Maybe it fell in line with some Japanese holiday or it got released early because they released another supplement late and they put them together.

Even if there is an excuse to release to japan early, there is no reason we should not get it at the same time (digital copies at least, you don't have to ship those so they should be available as soon as the product is finished being written).

Second are probably whether they changed much on the Barbarian, and what Thaneblood is.

Thanks for volunteering!

Weapon Expertise--+1 to attack rolls for one weapon group with weapon powers--increases to +2 at 15th and +3 at 25th.

Half-orc--+2 Str/Dex, low-light vision, speaks Common and Giant, +2 Endurance/Intimidate, first time bloodied in an encounter gain 5 temp HP (10 at 11th and 15 at 21st), +2 Speed when charging, Furious Assault encounter power (do an additional 1W or d8 damage for non-weapon attacks after you hit an enemy)

Deva--I saw nothing here I haven't seen on those leaked character sheets

Barbarians--they now get a +1 bonus to AC and Reflex when not in heavy armor (+2 at 11th, +3 at 21st). Thaneborns rely on Cha as a secondary stat--when they bloody a foe, the next attack against it gets a bonus to hit equal to the Thaneborn's Cha modifier. They also have the Roar of Triumph encounter power (close burst 5, each enemy -2 all defenses until end of next turn, triggered by reducing a foe to 0 hp)

Yo, Strait pimping the Warden, yo. So Korro, how is the Wizard different from the Invoker in your opinion?

I'd need to give it a more thorough examination to answer that, but my initial impression is that while the Invoker doesn't seem clearly more powerful or a better controller than the Wizard, it is much more...flavorful. The very names and descriptions of their powers just grab me more than the Wizard ones, though that could just be because the Invoker is still shiny and new. Were I to play a controller right now, I'd definitely take Invoker over Wizard.

The Invoker has more of a sub-emphasis as a leader than the Wizard. They have cool powers that render them immune to damage for a short while, allow themselves or an ally to fly for the duration of an encounter, grant a bonus standard action, etc., as well a small amount of healing effects. (One 25th level power does 6d6 + Wis damage to all enemies within 10', and gives all allies in the area a healing surge).

One 29th level Avenger power does 9W + Wis.

Variant ritual books cost the same but take a different form--stone tablets, paintings on weapons, patterns of knots, etc.

Ironwood--takes one hour, permanently grants a wooden object the strength of steel.

Gnomes can't use two-handed weapons and must use versatile weapons two-handed (but get no damage bonus for doing so).

Okay. Bad class choice. What about Goliath Warden? Or Barbarian?

Barbarians are already encouraged to use Dailies early in the encounter. They want to reward/encourage a certain playstyle. The only thing that sucks worse than missing with a daily is missing with a daily in the first round of an encounter.

I have two questions about the new rules clarifications/errata that has appeared:

1) What is the change to marks. I noticed it immediately and am wondering what it is they have clarified. I am desperate for an answer here, my curiosity is just about killing me.

2) Have they done anything about fixed static saving throw modifiers, like orb of ultimate imposition and the like?

Just asking again in case it was missed.

Sorcerers aren't as damaging as I thought they'd be. Their highest damage-dealing 29th level power does 5d8 + Cha. However, it's a burst 3 power, so I guess it all balances out. I don't think Sorcerers will be seen as unable to compete with other strikers--I'd definitely go for a Dragoborn Dragon-Magic sorcerer heading into Dragonsoul Heir.

It lets the half elf use his Dilettante power as an at-will power, and if he paragon multi-classes he can draw powers from any class and spend an action point to regain a used encounter attack power.

It's the same. The fourth power is a Cha-based melee power that reduces one of the foe's defenses by 2 until the end of the next turn.

It lets the half elf use his Dilettante power as an at-will power, and if he paragon multi-classes he can draw powers from any class and spend an action point to regain a used encounter attack power.

So this means a half elf with the Verstile Master feat would have 3 at Will Powers, 1 being from another class.

It also means that should they choose to paragon multiclass and swap out an at will power, they could have 1 class "at-will" power and 2 "at-will" powers from other classes (which can be different)

That is very nice versatility and should open up some extremely interesting combinations

drawing powers from any class if you pargaon multiclass is just gravy

The one example I've seen posted required either a heavy or light blade (and I'd expect the others to be the same).

This means you have two options: use a Khopesh, or ask your DM to make an exception.

(Personally, I could see a Dwarven Songhammer as making sense, but an Axe doesn't really seem that musical, unless your objective is to make a bad pun involving the slang term for guitars.)

The benefit is if you are backed into a corner and have no close spells left, you can use a range spell as if it were a "melee" spell so you don't provoke an attack of opportunity.

No, only melee basic attacks are used for opportunity attacks. My problem with this is you'd need to be able to legally make the ranged attack initially (to be able to change it into a melee basic attack). The dagger changes a ranged attack into a melee attack, it does not make your ranged powers count as melee attacks.

That's an important distinction as far as opportunity attacks are concerned.

Edit: Particularly because the feat states it would be "when you use a ranged sorcerer attack power through a dagger", which can't be done on an opportunity attacks because you can't use a ranged power.

You need to be able to legally use the ability first, eg you need to make the ranged basic attack first.

Read the text of the feat again, especially the first sentence:

When you use a ranged sorcerer attack power through a dagger

You need to be able to use a ranged attack power initially, which then changes its type to a melee attack. You cannot use a ranged power on an opportunity attack, so it can't apply to begin with.

Noting that this is a distinction from the way the feat is worded but not might be the RAI. As far as the feat is worded, you can't use it for opportunity attacks because you can't use a ranged power on an opportunity attack (only a melee basic attack). The initial action of using the ranged power (which the feat THEN changes to a melee attack) is not legal. If the feat said "You may use ranged sorcerer attack powers as melee attacks" without the "when you use a ranged sorcerer power" part I would be more inclined to agree.

Edit: And again, I'll point out it does not state it changes it to a melee basic attack anywhere. A ranged basic attack =/ a basic melee attack. It changes RANGED attacks into MELEE attacks. As per the text.

You need to be able to legally use the ability first, eg you need to make the ranged basic attack first.

So if it's still a ranged attack in the sense that it cannot be used to make opportunity attacks, then it wouldn't be a ranged attack in the sense that it provokes an opportunity attack?

If you are still making a ranged attack, then in what sense is it a melee attack?

Can a kind soul with the PHB2 tell me about the theme of each sorcerer paragon path, and perhaps a preview of their powers?
