| #1tsukinousagiJan 06, 2010 11:43:30 | Rather than try to catch up on threads that have gone to a few pages, for several topics where the gist is 'what about this' and then proceeding to advocate anything and everything, I say go ahead and print anything you desire. In the end, the person running the game always has the right to say 'no not including that'. I'm already doing it now. A friend was all for getting a number of PC choices should his current PC come to grief. He's like a kid in a candy shop We have access to the DDI PC generator and he's forever designing up yet another PC with it using just made available choices. But just because it's a legit in print choice, doesn't mean I'm inviting it into my game.I'm steping from a generic user made realm into Eberron shortly (next session likely), and he was all 'great I can use Dopplegangers now'. Nope, not if I am not interested though. Therefore, make anything up you can think up for inclusion in upcoming books. Some will want them, some won't. Don't fret that including something will 'break the worth of the book'. I have yet to see a release that was money poorly spent. But I have seen some content that is unlikely to end up in my game much all the same. The books are guides. The person running the game is after all 'running' the game. There is no such thing as 'well it's in print, you have to allow it'. Nope. If I say it's not, that's all there is too it. And it's not easy sitting in the DMs chair I'm not concerned I will hear, 'well then I'll just run a game myself'. It takes more than buying a few books to be an adequate DM. You can't just open an adventure book and there's no work hehe.I plan to create 'content' out of my own imagining as well of course. Nothing says funny like 'that isn't in the book'. Love hearing the players when they realize they can't use pre knowledge from reading about something in order to gamey their way out of figuring out what to do. Loving the expanded planar books. Nothing makes a job easier than lots of decent source content to work with. I find they make it easier to make the monsters relevant to the setting. |

I am a DM, and I know how tough the job can be, but I know I don't want WotC to just print whatever they want, because I want every race and class to be usable. I don't want pages of wasted space in my books, and a DM shouldn't just say that something's not allowed." "Just because I have a certain amount of power, doesn't mean I should take away my player's fun. I have a player who wants to play stuff I don't always approve of, but I let him make all sorts of stories and character ideas, and when it comes time to choose one, I just play up the one most appropriate, help him make it as fun as any other idea he had, and maybe help incorporate parts of other ideas." "Either way, as part of the basic idea of this thread, I think WotC has done a good job with their books, and I am pleased to let them make the decisions as they have been." |

Could have been anyone at the table, but the one that is likely was the one everyone wanted in that seat. The books had to be printed in order to be bought. Sounds crazy self evident, but not always I guess But the books are not rules in the same way that some game rule books are. And even wargames renown for being exacting often have optional sections. |
| #4Crimson_ConcertoJan 06, 2010 15:10:06 | . . . What? O_o This thread makes no sense. What is going on in here? The OP's second post doesn't at all match up with his first post, and the second post seems totally non sequitor. |
| #5strand0Jan 06, 2010 16:26:43 | That is true, Crimson_Concerto. Tsukinousagi's posts on other topics also trend to be off-topic. Just his/her style I guess. ![]() |

If I put stuff people posted on this forum in my sig, this would be a no brainer. I love it and its very true. I salute you for saying so. I'v said as much, many times, in different words. Now just remember that when you run games and play. ![]() |
| #7tsukinousagiJan 07, 2010 9:05:26 | ??? There is a word I think needs to be looked up. Context. My second post was directly related to the reply I got from my first post. "Just because I have a certain amount of power, doesn't mean I should take away my player's fun" I responded with "great mistakes in rolegaming, the DM thinking the DM is god". Because too many that take up the role of DM think they are both infallible, and can do no wrong and thus are unresponsive to the players. "I have a player who wants to play stuff I don't always approve of" I responded with "The books had to be printed in order to be bought.". I don't resent that there are all manner of things in the books that I might not want in my game, that will only get the players all excited right up till I tell them sorry I just don't want that in the game. Maybe it's that I AM a wargamer, and that my English language skills are what they are. But I can't always know in advance people will have trouble following the context of my posts ![]() |
| #8strand0Jan 09, 2010 0:43:26 | So, what is the topic? I think it is how to deal with someone who makes a lot of different characters. They use all of the newest rules that come up, even the the DM doesn't want to have those classes/races in the campaign they are running. A: The DM should just post a list of what books are allowed... ahead of time. |
| #9tsukinousagiJan 09, 2010 10:20:16 | I'm planning to do something similar shortly as I am going from a home made realm to using Eberron. But I want to make the group more aware of what is and is not to be expected. My current 4th edition based group hasn't actually been playing for so long, so it is not like we have a long history and everything is fully explained out. And they are all fairly green as role gamers too. But one of my players is the very keen enthusiastic sort (which is actually good to have in the group). |
