| #1MithrusApr 25, 2009 10:21:51 | This thread was inspired by the PHB3 thread(s) on future races. I LOVED my thri-kreen character in 2E. He wasn't even from Dark Sun oddly enuf, but we used the DS version as a base and scaled it WAAAAY back. Now, all things being "balanced" in 4E, my question to the masses is this: is there a way to even remotely balance the thri-kreen race without totally destroying the flavor? The toughest decision was what to do with the second set of arms. IMO, the best choice is to just let em shrivel up and go I don't think there is any way to balance a second set of arms... Here's my first stab at it: RACIAL TRAITS Ability Scores: +2 Dexterity, +2 Wisdom Size: Medium Speed: 6 squares Vision: Low-light Languages: Common, Thri-kreen Skill Bonuses: +2 Athletics, +2 Perception Natural Armor: +1 racial bonus to AC (chitin) Weapon Proficiency: You gain proficiency with the gythka and the chatka. Poison Bite: You gain the poison bite racial power Poison Bite Thri-kreen Racial Power Encounter ✦ Poison Minor Action melee 1 Targets: One Creature Attack: Strength + 2 vs. Fortitude, Constitution + 2 vs. Fortitude, or Dexterity + 2 vs. Fortitude Hit: 1d4+Constitution modifier poison damage. Increase to +4 bonus and 2d4+Constitution modifier at 11th level, and to +6 bonus and 3d4+Constitution modifier damage at 21st level.
Effect: Target is slowed (save ends). If the target fails its first save, target becomes immobilized (save ends). If the target fails its second save for this effect, target becomes unconscious (save ends).
Special: When you create your character, choose Strength, Constitution, or Dexterity as the ability score you use when making attack rolls with this power. This choice remains throughout your character’s life and does not change. Weapon Prof. Damage Range Price Weight Group Properties Gythka +2 1d10/1d10 — 30 gp 10 lb. Staff,Light Blade Defensive, off-hand Chatka* +3 1d6 8/16 1 gp 1/2 lb. Light blade Light thrown * similar to a boomerang, this weapon will return on a miss. |

I would suggest a simple rule like, maybe, the thri kreen can carry objects or wield implements with the lower set, but can not wield a weapon. Or maybe, something similar to the riding lizard's special attack, whenever the character makes an attack, you can make an additional basic attack with a weapon in one of the lower arms that deals Strength Mod damage. |
| #3MarandahirApr 25, 2009 10:56:15 | Or perhaps Thri-Kreen can use weapons/implements like Staffs/Quarterstaffs along with another weapon (as in the picture, where it holds a staff with one major arm, and one minor arm). This would open up possibilities with the Double Implement Feat and with certain Double Weapons. It would be unwieldy, though, to wield a Staff as a double weapon with two arms on the same side, so maybe using it as a weapon is a no go, but you can use Staff and another implement only. Or perhaps you get a negative to using Double weapons, but you can wield two of them. Or you can use two polearms, but not four swords, because the lesser arms are not strong enough to bear the weight of an entire weapon on their own, but can act as the second hand in certain two-handed weapons (but not others, like many Swords, Axes, and Hammers that require two hands). There's plenty of possibilities for keeping the other two arms without getting a 4-sword juggernaut. That said, this probably belongs in the Races & Monsters board, rather than the Future releases board. It's not been confirmed that Thri-Kreen are in the PH3, or that Dark Sun is the 2010 Setting (however likely it is). And considering your dealing with speculatory stats, this is really something to go in the "races" write-up places, and eventually get into the races compilation over there. |

I'll post it over there to hopefully get additional feedback (and I apologize for the cross-posting). |
| #5yabathewhatApr 25, 2009 13:33:03 | Actually, I don't see too many problems with thri-kreen in fourth edition. Even when characters can wield multiple weapons, they need class-related powers or feats in order to use those weapons for additional attacks. So really, having four arms only adds extra torch/object hands, not extra attacks or more powerful attacks. Give them a few racial feats along the way (examples below), and you're set. Possible thri-kreen feats: >> Add +1 damage when wielding a two-handed weapon in three hands >> Wield a shield and a two-handed weapon at the same time >> Bonus encounter power +20 to one jump check |
| #6anubis_reynardApr 25, 2009 15:11:08 | I would point out that there are several powers that effectively give you an extra hand, (Mage hand, spectral hand familiar, ect) and they all have pretty much the same effect- Gain Quickdraw. |

Instead of a bonus, it's generally a "Roll twice, take the better" deal now. |
| #9TectuktitlayApr 25, 2009 21:59:48 | Might as well toss my own version of Thri-Kreen on this thread (duplicated to this subforum), as well:Thri-Kreen Someone on the other thread thought the poison bite was too powerful. It hasn't been a problem thus far. It hasn't even been as good as Elven Accuracy, for example, even though the rest of the race is specifically using the elf as its template for design. It has been slightly behind the elf as far as overall power level, which is fine as I consider elves to be one of the more overall useful races made thus far. If I were to change it, the heroic-tier ability would be immobilized, and the rest would remain the same. |
| #10stogoeApr 26, 2009 10:01:45 | Instead of a bonus, it's generally a "Roll twice, take the better" deal now. The barbarian has a utility power that's "Jump check +X, can exceed your speed". I think it's level 2. So, while +20 seems too big, I can totally see "jump check +X, exceed your speed" as a Thri-kreen racial power. Or a "jump your speed +X squares as a move action." Man, I have fond memories of my 3.x thri-kreen ninja of the crescent moon. |
| #11yabathewhatApr 26, 2009 12:49:38 | Instead of a bonus, it's generally a "Roll twice, take the better" deal now. That's for racial powers, not racial feats. And there's already a basic rule for getting +1 damage when wielding a one-handed versatile weapon in two hands. The barbarian has a utility power that's "Jump check +X, can exceed your speed". I think it's level 2. So, while +20 seems too big, I can totally see "jump check +X, exceed your speed" as a Thri-kreen racial power. Yeah, that works too. |
| #12eldritch_lordApr 26, 2009 13:49:17 | [...] even though the rest of the race is specifically using the elf as its template for design. So...the thri-kreen has eaten the elf and taken his stuff? :D |
| #13TectuktitlayApr 26, 2009 14:37:04 | So...the thri-kreen has eaten the elf and taken his stuff? :D Heh, yup, in some ways certainly. Actually, it ended up being not QUITE as potent as the elf, and I'm ok with that, since the elf is one of the best races, hands down. There was already a lot of crossover when I started designing the kreen, i.e. the extra speed, low-light vision, perception checks, etc. After I was done initially, it already started looking a bit like the elf, so I simply went ahead and blatantly used it as the basis to bring the race in-line with regards to balance. :D |
| #14undraveApr 27, 2009 1:02:38 | From the art above what I see is that the upper arms don't have digit...so I could see them being used to hold things (bonus to grab attempt maybe) but not DO anything precise like attack. |
| #15danmakoApr 27, 2009 1:23:20 | Has anyone mentioned that Thri-Kreen dont sleep.....bit of an extended rest bonus, or maybe a short rest bonus |
| #16undraveApr 27, 2009 1:28:13 | Has anyone mentioned that Thri-Kreen dont sleep.....bit of an extended rest bonus, or maybe a short rest bonus Neither do Warforged, but they still need to take an extended rest by not doing anything for 6 hours. |
| #17EnclaveApr 30, 2009 1:26:39 | Has anyone mentioned that Thri-Kreen dont sleep.....bit of an extended rest bonus, or maybe a short rest bonus Drow and Eladarin trance instead of sleep. During that they are fully aware. So yea, it's not some amazing bonus that no other race has. |
| #18Axiomatic_BadgerApr 30, 2009 6:48:34 | If I might suggest an alteration to the bite, make it "Any two attributes" Vs AC. Do we really need rules for extra arms? I we just say two of them aren't strong enough to wield weapons then there's no real difference between having four and having two. |
| #19kimbyMay 05, 2009 23:39:57 | This thread was inspired by the PHB3 thread(s) on future races. I wouldn't mind seeing the Thri-Kreen make a comeback as a PC race in 4E. |
