By coincedence, the series is just being released on DVD. www.wbshop.com/Thundarr-The-Barbarian-Th... As one would expect, the series features poor animation, but the themes, stories and feel are a great fit for Gamma World. I certainly see myself pilfering some ideas for adventures from it. |

It may have influenced the second edition of the game, but, really, there wasn't much difference between those first two eds. Maybe Thundarr was influenced by Gamma World? Or the two drew from common sources, like Fritz Lieber's 'Gather Darkness,' Brian Aldiss's 'Starship,' the Marvel take on Mutants in X-men, atom-age horror movies like Them, and, maybe, two movies that came out in 1977: Damnation Alley, and Wizards. One noticeable difference between GW and TtB is that there apears to be actual magic in Thundarr's world (as in Bakshi's 'Wizards'). There are 'wizards' and Thundarr travels with a Sorceress. Yeah, she might just be a mutant with Repulsion Field and Hands of Power, but still... ;) |

| #5FlashbackJonOct 04, 2010 10:00:10 | Wow. I watched Thundarr back in the day, but looking over the episode summaries on Wikipedia, it is simply amazing how easily each of these translates into an adventure seed! ![]() |

Gamma World came out in 1977 and Thundarr came out in 1980. It was Wizards by Ralph Bakshi which is mentioned in the wiki entry. (A movie I quite like as you might ascertain from my Avatar avatar.) I found this pdf of an old Thundarr RPG. It is worth a look over just for fun if you liked Thundarr, and it does have some cool fluff that can relate to GW. docs.google.com/fileview?id=0Bx4gJKAyO5A... |

I played the original Gamma World (which was terrible -- you couldn't make a character unless it was a PSH without it being tragically crippled). Thundarr came out when I was in college, but even so, I watched it religiously. I even wrote my own game based off of Gamma World, AD&D and Thundarr that had classes and races, certain classes restricted to Pure Strain Humanoids (like mages). Ah, the good old days. |
