| #1melloredAug 16, 2010 8:29:02 | All the new essentials stuff comes with tokens. Personally i like it, as one of the major barriers for me getting mini's is price. Addmittedly, mini's are cooler, but i'd rather have the correct token, then a stand in mini. I hope they release token sheet for the Monster Manuals. What do you think? |
| #2MockAug 16, 2010 8:52:18 | Tokens work for me - cheaper, accurate (assuming you don't have to stand one of them in, of course), have a bloodied side, more convenient to store, etc. I like minis - especially when you get a sense of scale between medium and large or huge creatures - but tokens are more convenient. |
| #3lizardmageAug 16, 2010 8:55:24 | I like it, tokens are cheaper, and I should be able to get the monsters I need rather then random boxes -.- I do hope that they sell Tokens outside of boxes ala the Tiles sets, just in case I need more Orcs or Lizardfolk then initially come in the Monster Vault. Plus, when I do use a Mini then it will stand out more, especially if it's the BBEG. |
| #4HaldrikAug 16, 2010 9:03:33 | Minis are musthaves for PCs, and maybe NPCs and special monsters. Tokens work awesome for any else. |
| #5Delazar78Aug 16, 2010 9:25:06 | I always used "paper minis" made by myself. Basically, a paper "triangle" with a base, and two standing sides. I wouldn't know how to simulate a "prone" mob with a bi-dimensional token... |
| #6VaultDwellerAug 16, 2010 10:15:15 | I prefer minis for PCs. For enemies, I prefer tokens. I've actually been making my own tokens for monsters since shortly after I started playing 4e - I have about 700 or so made at this point, I think. The problem with token sheets, though, is that while you may have the right token for a monster, I think you will often find yourself not having enough of that type of monster. |
| #7JohnLynchAug 17, 2010 7:54:04 | I'm happy to spend heaps of money and buy the minis (this is actually true. I'm not being sarcastic here). If I were to use tokens I'd probably be inclined to make my own. Many people do that and there's quite a few threads around on how to do it. That said, I wouldn't be annoyed if I got a product with tokens. |
| #8ah_plaguedAug 17, 2010 9:21:58 | I've always thought tokens were a good medium between paper stand-ups and miniatures. The fact that they're numbered and have 'bloodied' sides alleviates some of the tracking work from the DM. |
| #9The_JesterAug 17, 2010 10:02:21 | You need some battle map representation for 4e, so tokens are a must. New players need an option other than expensive minis, many long out of print. But as someone who already has a giant mini army I have no need of tokens, and don't really feel like buying the two big monster boxes that come bundled with tokens that I will never, ever use. I'd prefer a separate token box, which would also allow people who need more tokens (or replacements for lost/damaged tokens) to buy more. |
| #10modern_iconoclastAug 18, 2010 12:57:13 | Tokens are cool, I mean they reach more people I guess since they cost less money. But I hope they continue producing minis. Like The_Jester we have a lot and use them every game. We rarely use replacement minis, we practically have 'em all. I'm just hoping to see minis from the MM3 and Dark Sun books, but I support the Tokens, it's nice to have another option. As long as it does not mean that mini are no longer produced. |
| #11GazraAug 18, 2010 13:36:31 | I like the tokens for the low cost, ease of transportation and the printed numbers that keep me from getting mixed up. I still like minis for boss fights, though. I use little wooden discs that I color with markers to cover conditions and marks and such (my cheap, home-made Alea Tools), so I just started using one of the colors for prone when we switched over to using mostly tokens. |

Tokens for travel DMing. Minis for PCs and "home DMing". |

| #14PhobosAug 19, 2010 6:58:13 | Huge fan of PC and monster tokens. I'm keen on PC miniatures as well. Being able to buy packs of *inexpensive* tokens (12 goblins, 12 orcs, etc) major plus! |

Addmittedly, mini's are cooler, but i'd rather have the correct token, then a stand in mini. Im with you on this. Im assuming you've seen Fiery Dragons counters? Got em an I love em. So with the cancelation of the minis line is 4e going all Token? It would be great if all the adventures included any unique tokens for enemies and NPC in the module. |
| #16PhobosAug 19, 2010 20:58:12 |
THIS They have said all along it was way too impractical and cost inefficient to release minis for adventures, but 2-3 sheets for tokens... I bought my Dark Sun adventure for $10.xx, I'd pay $14 with tokens for the creatures. |
| #17GazraAug 19, 2010 23:27:28 |
Same here. I love this idea. |
| #18vzzrrkktiberias7Aug 21, 2010 5:04:25 | It is really good to see a positive reaction to tokens. At another site I frequent they are vehement toward pogs. I prefer miniatures well above tokens but tokens make more sense in a game of your imagination. I'll be buying several copies of the monster vault. I now have 2 lurker, 7 skirmish, 2 controllers, 2 artillery, 5 brute/soldier, 1 solo and 8 minion miniatures available for MM1 core book monsters- it has cost me over $5,000 dollars! $40.00 for a monster vault and I have tokens for everything- count me in! |

Are they golden? ![]() I've got about 100-150 D&D Minis + some Warhammer stuff and I doubt I've spent more that $400 on them. |
| #20MechaPilotAug 21, 2010 17:27:09 | I'd like to add my own +1 to the token love. Tokens are cheaper to produce (and hence to buy), lighter to carry around with you, easier to store, and (from the pics I've seen) they look really good. If what others have said is true, that the reverse side indicates a bloodied condition, then tokens go well beyond minis is my book as they interact with the mechanics of the game. I'd also like to add my voice to those calling for published adventures to include tokens for evey monster and NPC included therein. Another thing I'd like to see is hero tokens (again with bloodied on the reverse). Divide them up by race, with packages of Tiefling Hero Tokens, Dragonborn Hero Tokens, etc. The packages should contain two tokens for each class (one male and one female). Whatever doesn't get used for the PCs can them be used for NPCs. |
| #21vzzrrkktiberias7Aug 22, 2010 0:08:57 | I hope the back of monster tokens are not bloodied versions- I'd rather have double the number of monsters. The red box has different monsters on the back of the tokens so I'd imagine the monster vault will follow suit. |

The red box has different monsters on the back of the tokens so I'd imagine the monster vault will follow suit. Unless you cut the tokens in half, you really wouldn't have double the number of tokens because you couldn't have the creature from each side of the token is separate locations on the map at the same time. |

Judging from some of the preview pictures of the Monster Vault it looks like at least some of the monster tokens will have 'bloodied' sides. |

The red box has different monsters on the back of the tokens so I'd imagine the monster vault will follow suit. It could be avoided by having the other side many levels apart - for instance orcs have drow or archon backs. But I think bloodied works too. |
| #25longlive2ndeditionAug 22, 2010 13:38:23 | If it means that WotC aren't producing miniatures, Then I am totally against tokens. Now if WotC wants to produce tokens to give the gamers an option to buy either, then I will support tokens. I already have spent THOUSANDS of dollars on my mini collection, and if WotC does'nt want my money I guess thats fine with me too. I would'nt buy tokens if that was my only option. |

The red box has different monsters on the back of the tokens so I'd imagine the monster vault will follow suit. The Starter Red Box has tokens that have one different creature on each side- double the amount of monsters. I believe the 10 sheets from the vault are double side; ex. Kobold on one side and skeleton on the other. |

The red box has different monsters on the back of the tokens so I'd imagine the monster vault will follow suit. I guess miniony things are double-sided, 'cause there is no sense in bloodied side in this case. |

The red box has different monsters on the back of the tokens so I'd imagine the monster vault will follow suit. That would make a lot of sense for minions, but I would hope the non-minions have some mechanical interaction (and I think the bloodied side is a great idea). |
| #29fjw70Aug 23, 2010 19:13:59 | I really like tokens, but I love minis. If I couldn't afford minis then tokens would be an acceptable substitute. |
| #30vzzrrkktiberias7Aug 23, 2010 19:14:53 | Not to argue, as I understand the desire for a bloodied side, but the monster manual in the monster vault is, I believe, over 250 pages. I don't think 10 sheets of tokens would cover that. Time will tell. |
| #31jim11735Aug 27, 2010 14:09:40 | How thick are the tokens, Dungeon Tiles thick? The Robot Chicken videos on WotC were great and I really wanted to get behind the minis, not to mention those great battlemat dungeons. But I know you have to purchase hundreds of minis to randomly get enough for those encounters, much less the ones I design. Minis take a little something away from the imaginative aspect of the game for me, but add to the table aspect of the game - stand in minis just take and take. My guess is PDFs of the mini sheets will be on the web before the product is. Print, punch and glue as many tokens as you need. And I like the idea of double siding ones I print and stick on the Alea Tools bases. |
| #32vzzrrkktiberias7Aug 27, 2010 18:56:18 | The Red Box tokens are not as thick as the dungeon tiles, maybe a third? They are of high print quality though. |
| #33Chiba_MonkeyAug 31, 2010 20:22:18 | I just recently had an hour-long geek out session with the owner of a local gaming store in the town I am currently staying in temporarily while my squadron is on detachment. The Essentials "Monster manual" book will have several sheets of tokens, at least one for every monster, and several of some monsters, like 8 kobolds. After all, who EVER needs just one kobold? |
