Rather, he makes me think of an evil God that I will think, "it's a pity he became as he did, but that doesn't excuse how he's acted in response.  It explains a couple things, though."

I really, really like the characterisation and history of Torog.  He's probably my favourite evil god, because he has a distinct reason to be evil.

The other evil gods seem to be evil because of opposition to the the "good" gods when the Dawn War broke into a conflict of deities vs deities at the very end.

Have they given more info on his backstory apart from him finding himself inprisioned after the Dawn War?

Did you already see Torturer's Ruin, an adventure involving him?  The  overview is the first preview from the Underdark book (www.wizards.com/dnd/Article.aspx?x=dnd/4...).  His stats & some more backstory were also posted somewhere else (maybe in an Ampersand).  Ex.:  Torturous Exhaustion aura...when any enemy within the aura makes a saving throw against ongoing damage, that enemy is weakened. Enemies can choose not to make saving throws against ongoing damage to avoid this effect.

I'm not sure how much time one could spend pitying him.  His story certainly has sad elements, but he's pretty mean and icky now if you ask me.  Upon sight of him, a PC is probably more likely to be shocked with horror rather than run up and give him a hug.  He's not Ilmater.  ;)

Is there any reason why I can't see the artwork in question? It really is kind of annoying because I'd like to contribue something meaningful, but I can't if I don't have the faintest clue what Torog actually looks like.

Underdark gives a great explanation of Torog's history and motivations. The only way it could be better on that score is if it gave a rundown on the church.
