| #2enigmashockJun 12, 2008 13:17:50 | Well, (as a curiosity) if you bought everything on the list (so far) at retail price, it would run you in the neighborhood of $735 |
| #3JohnLynchJun 12, 2008 20:12:36 | Why would you buy both DMG/MM/PHBs as well as the starter set? At this stage I'll be buying: * Adventurer's Vault * Draconomicon I * MotP * H2 and H3 * Possibly Dungeon Delve (need more info). I'm not particularly interested in an undead supplement. I'm also unsure if I'll get FR or simply use my own homebrew world for my traditional fantasy game. |
| #4enigmashockJun 12, 2008 20:52:44 | Why would you buy both DMG/MM/PHBs as well as the starter set? At this stage I'll be buying: From its description, it sounds like the starter set if for those who have never played before. Includes dice, minis, a map, and an adventure - along with basic rules. I guess it lets people put their toe in the water before they drop $100 for the core set. Maybe it is modeled after the old beginner and expert box sets . .. hmmm I wonder if they come with a crayon to color in the dice with? |
| #5serphetJun 12, 2008 21:25:36 | i thought Adventurer's Vault: A Guide to Weapons, Equipment, and Treasure for Your Character was simply the Tome of Treasures |
| #6dalzigJun 12, 2008 22:39:18 | i thought was simply the Tome of Treasures They changed it from Tome of Treasures to Adventurer's Vault. That way it's made clear that players can buy and use it as well as DMs. |
| #7enigmashockJun 13, 2008 10:05:43 | If it's for players it should be called "Shiny Stuff: Ooooh, I want that!":D |
| #8jsm3050Jun 13, 2008 10:20:55 | I'm not particularly interested in an undead supplement. Same here. I'd like to know when the next volume of the Draconomicon is expected to be done. |
| #9enigmashockJun 13, 2008 10:26:41 | Same here. I'd bet a shiny nickel it comes after MM2, which will introduce Metallic Dragons (speculation only) |
| #10arkady_vJun 13, 2008 10:56:36 | I really have very little interest at all in the Draconomocon products. I mean, how often do characters fight dragons anyway. Of these products, the two I'm most interested in, by far, as a player are Martial Power and Adventurer's Trove. As a DM, I'm interested in the Undead book far more than the Dragon book. Also in the modules, although if they're the same quality as KotS, that'd suck... because it's story is just plain horrible... could it be any more cliched?. I love that it included maps, and I like the encounter format, but, geez, the story was so cliched and lame it was amazing. Look at the quality of the Pathfinder adventures and compare that to this... it's not even close. I'm not even remotely interested in the Realms, I'm an Eberron fan and the Realms just bore the heck out of me. Off topic, if anyone from WOTC is listening, how about putting jpgs of the maps for individual encounter areas in modules up on DDI so we can print them off for use as battle maps instead of having to scan them. I scanned each encounter area and then used photoshop to break them into 11 x 17 sections, printed them off at the color printer at work, and then taped them together, and it was awesome. Except for traps and secret doors being shown on the pages... it'd be nice if those were taken off for any that are uploaded to DDI. |
| #11enigmashockJun 13, 2008 11:26:50 | I really have very little interest at all in the Draconomocon products. I mean, how often do characters fight dragons anyway. I am with you on this. My probable targets are Martial Power, Adventurer's Vault, Dungeon Delve, and Manual of the Planes with the Undead book on the side - Although I am holding off on the Draconomicon until I see it or read some reviews. I had the 3e one and, although it had some interesting bits to read - I never used it once. My player group agreed that we would use H1-H3 for our first 4e encounters so we could focus on the new mechanics and not worry too much about the other stuff. By the time we finish there, we should be off and running. I'm not even remotely interested in the Realms, I'm an Eberron fan and the Realms just bore the heck out of me. I am an Eberron guy as well. My guess is that it will be out next year. I remember reading somewhere that they are looking to roll out settings once a year. I am sure we will get Spelljammer by 2012. Honestly, the idea of printable maps for DDi has made me consider getting a large format color printer to just run off maps. I am already working on effect templates using printed transparencies for blast and burst effects. The dungeon maps were sorely missed from that adventure. |
| #12enigmashockJun 30, 2008 15:29:39 | ***Updated with new Products. 6/30/2008*** Thanks to Belorin for the heads up. |
| #13igotsmeakabobJun 30, 2008 18:23:01 | There's no unofficial date for next year's Eberron material? |
| #14BelorinJun 30, 2008 18:35:20 | ***Updated with new Products. 6/30/2008*** Not a problem! Looking forward to the Martial and Arcane Powers books myself. Bel |
| #15GreenKnightJun 30, 2008 18:45:27 | I'll definitely be getting the following.
|
| #16enigmashockJun 30, 2008 21:41:14 | There's no unofficial date for next year's Eberron material? There is no official word from either Wizards nor Amazon. That being said, Forgotten Realms is slated for August, and we are just seeing hints of Q2 2009. Q1 seems pretty set, so my guess might by a Q3 release for new worlds - assuming they launch an Eberron campaign at all in 2009. |
| #17enigmashockJun 30, 2008 21:44:19 | Not a problem! Looking forward to the Martial and Arcane Powers books myself. Me as well. I was very pleased when I say you had found it. I knew they could not wait much longer than Martial, BUT if you notice it does launch the month after PHBII, so I am hoping it includes goodies for PHBII classes as well, although that would seem counter to WotC the dime-squeezing stratagem. |
| #18igotsmeakabobJun 30, 2008 22:16:51 | There is no official word from either Wizards nor Amazon. Considering that Keith Baker is writing the ECS now, I assume it'll be out next year... but I suppose nothing is guaranteed. |
| #19merrikcaleJun 30, 2008 22:29:56 | Considering that Keith Baker is writing the ECS now, I assume it'll be out next year... but I suppose nothing is guaranteed. They have said that it will be out in 2009 |
| #20UndrhilJun 30, 2008 23:19:56 | Just wanted to point out the "Dungeon Master 4e for Dummies" or whatever that one is called is slated for a November 15, 2008 release. The other "for Dummies" book is correct with July 15, 2008 release. |
| #21the_badger_02Jun 30, 2008 23:44:29 | I think I'll be getting the next PHB, Martial and Arcane Power, and the player's guide to Faerun, mainly for Genasi and Swordmage. |
| #22enigmashockJul 01, 2008 9:24:36 | Just wanted to point out the "Dungeon Master 4e for Dummies" or whatever that one is called is slated for a November 15, 2008 release. The other "for Dummies" book is correct with July 15, 2008 release. Fixed. Thanks! |
| #23enigmashockJul 01, 2008 9:27:44 | Oh, wow~ Yay me for sticky! |
| #24wrshamiltonJul 01, 2008 13:57:50 | Kind of nice that 4E for Dummies has the same release date as "Premium Dice." Maybe they can put them right next to each other. |
| #25BelorinJul 01, 2008 13:59:34 | Congrats on the sticky! Bel |
| #26enigmashockJul 01, 2008 14:45:28 | Thanks. I think it's pretty amazing they have everything through Q2 2009 lockedup tight, including quite a bit of artwork, and Q3 is coming along nicely. Did anyone notice that the cover art for PHBII has (what looks to be) a Goliath on the cover? Or is that a Warforged? Looks like a Goliath to me . . . |
| #27enigmashockJul 01, 2008 14:47:38 | Sorry the link above i to the Amazon page. Here is the cover pic: PHBII I think that's definately a Goliath, and that looks like an Elf chick summoning some kind of spectral/illusory kitties, although I suppose it could be a Gnome - looks elf. |
| #28BelorinJul 01, 2008 19:25:59 | As was pointed out to me in another thread if that is a Goliath Barbarian and most do agree that it is then the female character is not a Gnome as they top out at 3' 9" and Goliaths can be up to around 8' tall. I think it's a Shifter Shaman myself. Bel |
| #29UndrhilJul 01, 2008 23:04:51 | Anyone else notice that the powers text in that picture of the PHB2 shows "Arcane, Divine and Primal"? Interesting. |
| #30igotsmeakabobJul 02, 2008 0:24:36 | Anyone else notice that the powers text in that picture of the PHB2 shows "Arcane, Divine and Primal"? Interesting. ... Hehe... |
| #31enigmashockJul 02, 2008 4:01:07 | So primal would be Barbarian . . . would it also be a druid or shaman? Considering shamans (druids being the celtic version of a shaman) are intrinsically animistic, worshiping animals, plants, trees, winds, lava, et al., one could count that as primal rather than divine or arcane it would seem. |
| #32omegatecJul 02, 2008 7:12:35 | yeah druid and shaman would be primal... speaking of which the female on the cover looks elven to me and seems to be wearing a something on her head similiar to the iconic druid of 3e. but if it really is arcane, divine, primal; then the people over on the guess the classes of phb2 might need to take a new look at their choices. |
| #33ondoJul 03, 2008 3:07:27 | The Artificer article on Dragon specifies that it is "scheduled for release in 2009 in the Eberron Player's Guide". |
| #34enigmashockJul 03, 2008 9:19:37 | Thanks Ondo, I saw that. I was hoping for a little more info before I posted. I suppose I could just throw it up there |
| #35BelorinJul 03, 2008 13:58:02 | Monster Manual 2 up on products page, not alot of info: Release Date May 2009 Format Trade Hardcover Page Count 224 Price $29.95 ; C$34.00 Bel |
| #36enigmashockJul 03, 2008 14:23:25 | ***Updated, MMII*** Thanks again, Belorin! Look at me I'm a poet and I had some sort of inkling that I could have been one . . .a poet that is! |
| #37JohnLynchJul 05, 2008 5:25:36 | So we should expect the DMG 2 in June/July. Looks pretty good to me I like that its spread out among a few months to help pay for it. |
| #38BelorinJul 05, 2008 10:02:42 | That was the original plan for the first three core books till they changed because everyone wanted the first three together. Now they're back on track. Bel |
| #39enigmashockJul 05, 2008 11:12:05 | Do we have an official update on the DMG2? |
| #40BelorinJul 05, 2008 12:36:17 | Not yet, PHB II is up on Amazon, no cover image tho! Bel |
| #41enigmashockJul 05, 2008 12:53:11 | Yeah, that's the link I have up - Amazon whenever possible. |
| #42akumadaimyoJul 05, 2008 23:04:35 | Any idea when in 2009 4th Ed Eberron will be out? I'm also interested in if there will be a 4th edition Oriental Adventures? |
| #43enigmashockJul 06, 2008 9:26:42 | Probably Q3 2009 (July, August, September) for the Eberron, but that is only hypothesis. To my knowledge, there are no plans to reprinting Oriental Adventures for 4E. My guess is that they will fold the relevant classes, monsters and weapons into the Core, as was done with 3.5. Also, looking at MM1 with the Oni and such, it seems like they are doing that. Of course, that is again just conjecture. However, if they do release a campaign setting a year, who knows. Last month's Dark Sun article made me wonder if they were going to revive that setting in 4E. |
| #44bernie70Jul 06, 2008 9:38:26 | Did anyone notice that the cover art for PHBII has (what looks to be) a Goliath on the cover? Or is that a Warforged? Looks like a Goliath to me . . . My guess would be half-giant, since it's holding a *crystal* battleaxe...? |
| #45enigmashockJul 06, 2008 9:43:18 | Could be a half giant, although its stripy markings and grayinsh mottled coloring lead me to believe that is a memeber of **** Sapien Goliathens . . . perhaps he just has FABULOUS taste in weapons |
| #46NekoazuJul 07, 2008 16:42:04 | Any rumours on when they'll plan to do the Planescape setting? As for the books: the Adventurer's vault, Acrane Power and Manual of the Planes sound interresting. |
| #47enigmashockJul 07, 2008 17:02:30 | I have heard nothing on Birthright, Blackmoor, Council of Wyrms, Dark Sun, Dragonlance, Greyhawk, Jakandor, Lankhmar, Mystara, Pelinore, Planescape, Ravenloft, or Spelljammer settings. One can always hope . . . |
| #48mormonpriestxJul 08, 2008 13:31:32 | I hope they drop the price on their products or at least give people a coupon option when they go to events. Maybe let them spend their 3.5 RPG points towards a 5-10% off. Anything over 700 for a game is obsured. These books better be doing my school work, watching my kids, and stay current for at least a decade (and survive til then as well). WoTC should offer a paper back edition of the player's manual as well (like they did for 3.5 a year or two back) in a boxset with dice and figures. I am content with my 3.5 materials anyway so I know I won't be in too much of a hurry. And I would still like to see WoTC release a player's set of minitures where you can buy them by Race: Class and Gender sets. I.E Humans : Male and female fighter, m/f ranger, m/f rogue.... so on. It would make a killing. I know I am a niche player. I play races that I like and I would surely use the rest in later games or as villains. |

These books better be doing my school work, watching my kids, and stay current for at least a decade (and survive til then as well). Unfortunately, this will never happen. Your best bet is to look for pre-order deals or discounts from online volume "etailers". The reality is that WotC is a business first, and new products equal new revenue streams. Grow or die. Secondly, there would never be a way to verify who owns which book, unless you actually traded in the book itself. . . from simply a logistical standpoint, this is not at all likely. WoTC should offer a paper back edition of the player's manual as well (like they did for 3.5 a year or two back) in a boxset with dice and figures. They are releasing a "starter set" with dice, minis, and an "introductory rules book" (CLICK HERE TO SEE) I am content with my 3.5 materials anyway so I know I won't be in too much of a hurry. I would love to see this, however once more races come out it will be nigh impossible to keep up. Just using the PHB alone there are 64 combinations of class and race, not to mention further permutations of "Great Weapon vs. Sword-and-Board Fighters" or "TWF vs. Ranged ranger." Start adding MM races, PHBII races, etc and it becomes even more exponential. Sorry, I hate to be a downer |
| #50stahllegionJul 09, 2008 6:08:22 | sorry guys, no minis in the starter set. it's produced in the usa, the miniatures in china. you could add some weeks for the transport and some dollar too.![]() |
| #51raven_shadowereJul 11, 2008 1:10:41 | I see there is a PHB Deluxe and a PHB2 on your list. Do you know what the difference is between the two is? From the little I have read the PHB2 is going to have new classes and races. What exactly is the PHB Deluxe about? Cheers!! |
| #52enigmashockJul 11, 2008 1:33:36 | I see there is a PHB Deluxe and a PHB2 on your list. Do you know what the difference is between the two is? The "deluxe" editions of the core books will be leather-bound volumes instead of the usual coated cardboard covers. Also, there will probably be some errata updated before printing. Although I link to the Amazon pages for ease and (realistic) pricing info, the D&D products section often has early cover art before Amazon. This is one case in point. CLICK HERE FOR AN IMAGE OF PHB DELUXE. As far as the PHBII, you are correct - new classes, races and whatnot. I hope that answers your questions. |

Yeah, I would hope that errata is contained with in, they have the time to do it. Although, that suggested retail is mind blowing.....If it is true, I expect it to be over a C note here for me to buy it..... Cheers!! |
| #54stormonuJul 11, 2008 3:01:44 | Sadly, the glut of books from 3E broke me. Even worse, the problems our group has had with our 4E books falling apart/smudging (already) is making me leery of physical copies of any of the other books. That said, I'll probably get the starter set if it is a boxed set, for my son. He'll probably have a blast with 4E. Of the other books, the only ones I'm even mildly interested in is Martial Power and Adventurer's vault, though I am mighty miffed at the thought of buying a book already to get a decent list of mundane and magic items. I refuse to have anything to do with the PHB2. |
| #55winterbornJul 13, 2008 23:39:41 | Awesome |
| #56winterbornJul 13, 2008 23:42:16 | ah |
| #57ShiftkittyJul 14, 2008 17:18:05 | I'm hoping for a dungeon tiles set that is nothing but dungeon dressing. Chairs at various angles, tables, statuary, bunks, desks, etc. I had to use a couple of coffins to represent tables and had to keep reminding the guys what they were. Your quote reminded me of this GameSpy D&D funny that I saw this morning: http://www.gamespy.com/articles/888/888241p1.html "That must be the new Swingline Dragon . . ." |
| #59ShiftkittyJul 15, 2008 10:20:55 | :heehee That was too funny! The "How did you meet?" story was my favorite part! What's worse is that I actually do use pennies and other coins when I run out of minis:embarrass (Rule of thumb: Pennies showing heads are minions.) |
| #60enigmashockJul 16, 2008 15:31:17 | :heehee I still use dice. I have several sets of multi-colored dice. I just can't see making the Mini plunge. Besides, what's worse: 2 minis and 6 dice or 8 dice? I will sometimes use a mini to represent a boss, but usually I use different sized dice: 6-siders for low level, 8-siders for mid-level, and "Oh, we are screwed! What is that 12-sider?!?!?!?" |
| #61tigger11Jul 17, 2008 10:24:59 | So we have the schedule for books through May (MMII). For the rest of the year I'm guessing we will see: DMG 2 - Though I am not sure its that necessary Eberron Campaign Guide Eberron Players Guide Divine Power Primal Power Draconomicon II: Metallic Dragons Throw in possibly an Adventurers Vault II, Abberations Book or a Shadowfell/Feywild book and thats probably what we will see for next year plus at least the ending of the E series (ie E2 & E3) plus probably an Ebberon dungeon given we got Spellguard for FR. Is that about what everyone else sees coming up on the list, or have some other hints been made that push this list another way? -Tig |
| #62ranadielJul 17, 2008 16:17:20 | Is that about what everyone else sees coming up on the list, or have some other hints been made that push this list another way? The list looks good, but I think they'll save Primal Power for 2010 so that the Power books will come out on a more regular schedule(two a year is much more sustainable then three a year). We haven't seen anything on that yet though, so I'm just speculating. |
| #63gwydion80Jul 18, 2008 10:36:33 | is no one else upset about the removal of "core classes" from the original players handbook. I play with two people who wont even try 4e until they can play their monks....I understand the whole we gotta get some return so string it along but come on, 2009 to get to see the new (and I use that term loosely) classes. It kinda feels like they were in such a hurry to get the books on the shelves they held a meeting and when the people in charge of classes said, "we need one more day to finish the high level powers for a monk..." they were like CUT THEM! so disappointed.![]() |

And the best part...all that for one dollar at the thrift shop! is no one else upset about the removal of "core classes" from the original players handbook. I am a little, because i was actually looking forward to finally playing a Bard character after enjoying the stupid NPC Bard that keep showing up at the most inconvenient times. But i guess i have to wait untill 09... Till them... my rouge and warlock will do just fine. |

It kinda feels like they were in such a hurry to get the books on the shelves they held a meeting and when the people in charge of classes said, "we need one more day to finish the high level powers for a monk..." they were like CUT THEM! so disappointed. Well, if they're that picky bout what they'll play then they may not like having waited for a Monk that will be totally different than the 3x Monk. Bel |
| #67ShiftkittyJul 18, 2008 14:49:48 | Having played since 1e, my taste is that there are only four classes. All others are subclasses. Barbarian= fighter in the wild. Ranger= rogue in the wild. Druid=cleric in the wild. Monk=cleric focused on inner power rather than external deific power. Sorceror= DIY wizard. Paladin= fighter with a religious background. Bard= rogue with entertainment knack. That being said, I do believe the books were rushed to market. Yeah, it kept the price down, but there were other ways to do it. For example, if space was a consideration, let's look at the big artwork and chapter summary that takes up two pages at the start of each chapter. Was it really necessary? I like the artwork, but I outgrew picture books years ago. That space could have been used to provide a popular class or two a shout out. |

Every new version starts out with fewer "core classes" then we had on the previous version, as the game progresses classes are added, 3.5 has dozens, and when 4.0 came out, some obviously were not going to make the first book. I do find it interesting that you have two players who will only play the Monk Class, in my 28 years of DMing, I believe the total number of monks I've seen from 100's players is 3, and things arent looking up for you, as Monk doesnt appear to be in PH 2 either as I don't think there power source is Arcane, Divine or Primal which are the only ones covered in PH2. Honestly Druids, Sorcerors, Barbarians and even Bards are probably missed by more people then Monks. I'm more wondering how wizards is going to do financially now that they are going to be selling 1 new book a month (or less) instead of averaging over 2 a month as they did during the 3.5 days. -Tig |

More Points of Light locations and organizations! More world/campaign-building ideas! *Note: Too often, DMs don't want advice on how to run a game. This is the height of folly; in my experience, DMing is a complex art form, and advice is nearly always useful. |

A quick Google pulled up no retailers (or in fact WotC) who has "officially" announced them or plans to sell them. I will keep an eye out. |

My issue is that the DM guide is the smallest book of the 3, given we are getting a book on the planes, and several of the chapters probably dont require a revisit, magic items no longer show up in the DMGs, its going to take some good work to get us a DMG 2 with enough crunch to make it worth taking a bite, the other two are much easier sells. -Tig |

Well, don't forget, 3.5's DMG2 was awesome, despite not being a crunch-heavy book. Of all the core books, the DMGs are probably the most appropriate place for fluff, and that doesn't have to be a bad thing. If DMG2 has useful DMing tips to make my game more smooth and more exciting, and if it details another location to the extent of Saltmarsh or Fallcrest, I'll buy it and recommend it to everyone. It occurs to me: by the time DMG2 comes out, it looks like they'll have finished publishing this first adventure series. (H1-3, P1-3, E1-3; I haven't heard they're all going to be linked, but I hope they will.) Perhaps they'll describe the region where the next adventure path is based! I love when published adventures have additional resources. |

Here's the other problem I have with that post, (not that I think he is necessarily lying) How can there be only 100 cards in the deck? Unless they are releasing a deck per class or something . . . I smell shenanigans . . . :P |
| #76tigger11Jul 28, 2008 19:29:58 | I quite clearly says a deck per class, and given who posted it and the store he runs, I think calling shenanigans is pretty silly. I just think 9.99 per class is a little steep. Throw in the Martial or Arcane deck and its 19.98 a class, not sure I'm going to be getting that much use out of it to throw $20 at each and every class I want to run. It would be cheaper to buy extra books and cut them up. -Tig |

Now I am very intrigued by how the final yearly schedule is going to be spaced out(assuming there is going to be a repeating one). |
| #81BelorinAug 03, 2008 17:23:14 | I think it maybe the actual time needed for the different books vs. the estimated time needed. Add to that the constant demand for established races, classes and settings and they hopefully are only allowing time for proper development and playtesting. Bel |
| #82tigger11Aug 03, 2008 17:45:15 | New items on WotC product page! The problem is I am not sure that we know that power cards will ever be listed on that page, much like novels havent been as of this year, one of my big complaints earlier this year is that for some reason WOTC has decided to make 2008, the year of only 1 novel (Rani and the Wedding Ghost), and so far 2009 list makes it the year of 0 novels. Thats not really accurate, but that is the impression the Product release page gives you, but when you remove something that for years has been listed somewhere, it definitely makes the impression on the website. Making it harder to know what new products are selling isnt ever a good idea, so I'm not sure why they are doing it with the novels, and I expect doing it with the Power Cards at this point. Although, that doesn't make much sense either. Makes you wonder about thier marketing strategy, Personally, I am going to hold off until I saw how the DDI Character Builder pans out (whenever it is we get the damn thing!) before I would invest in cards. I have found (at least for my group) that cards are unruly and take up valuable table space. I use a single-sheet form, printed with the applicable math done. One sheet with check-off boxes works better for me. Also, I wonder about the reusable traits of these cards. If they are printed similar to MTG cards they may be difficult to write on, and writing in pencil may leave scars. If there is no place to print the stats, and the cards just look like the PHB entry, then they are less-than-useful for myself. Of course, this is all conjecture until WotC makes a formal announcement. |

Yeah, I have had that suggested before, and admittedly, I have not tried it. Have you used this method? Do you "tap" the cards by flipping them in the sleeve? Does the dry erase marker get rubbed off during play? What about between games? Do you re-write all your data every time you play? Inquiring minds want to know . . . |

Never used it myself, I play online so it wouldn't help too much. :P I just remembered hearing it somewhere and it seemed like a good idea. Back when I played a Crusader in 3.5 though, I kept his powers written on notecards and just turned them over when I couldn't use them. I imagine you could do the same thing with the power cards. |

Does the dry erase marker get rubbed off during play? What about between games? Do you re-write all your data every time you play? I print off double-sided cards with the whole rules text for the power written on them, including boxes at the bottom for player details. We write a player's bonuses and details directly on to the card in pencil, and then, for temporary effects, we write on the outside of the card sleeve with dry-erase markers. We do flip the cards over when the power is used. (Although some of my players never bother flipping over encounter powers inside the sleeve; they flip the whole card, sleeve and all, and then right it when the battle is over. They still flip dailies within their sleeves. Obviously, At-wills don't generally need to be flipped.) In the above manner, information is clear, concise, efficiently presented, and preserved for another session. (If you're using my players' "variant", it's a problem if you end a session in mid-encounter, but then, you should probably try to avoid doing that anyway.) Because of the utility of my own power cards, I won't be switching to official power cards unless the official ones are at least as utilitarian as my own. I'm a "no-frills" guy. |

Go back a year, 2007 we have 70+ novels on the list, this year we have one. Its silly and is hurting novel sales for no reason, and if the cards also dont get listed there, it will hurt the sales of cards. -Tig |
| #92elondirAug 05, 2008 9:14:48 | I think I understand now. My second-biggest complaint right now about 4e is that it feels incredibly incomplete. It's incomplete because they're packaging it in little pieces to sell individually, probably to give themselves a longer print run for 4e and more reliable sales. I don't see anything about strongholds, dominions, or mass combat (meaning any battle with more combatants than the current system can handle without bogging down). I guess I'll check back on 4e in a few years when the system feels more complete. Hopefully they'll fill in the rules subsystems instead of splat after splat of paragon paths. |

| #95tigger11Aug 08, 2008 13:04:19 | Books are listed at the website below: They've always had that usually badly done page, however they also have always listed the novels in the list with the product releases of the year. You can use the historical ones and go back to 1997, and lo and behold the novels are there, and they are there in every year since then until 2008, when they remove them, then wonder why Novel sales dropped this year. I used to order the new D&D books I wanted (either locally or from Amazon/B&N) and throw in the new Novels as well to push me over into free shipping, etc. At this point this year I am at least 8 novels behind for the year. I've spent alot less money with wizards this year vs last year at this time and that after I bought a boxed set of 4th edition and both modules, and honestly since they are producing fewer D&D gaming books in a year, I'm not sure financially its a great idea to also make it harder for me to figure out which novels are coming out and get me to buy them. It goes back to the whole Amazon listing the DM guides move to August, before most of Wizards apparently knew about it or was willing to talk about it. -Tig |

I'm curious, were you a big fan of 3.x? I see this complaint often, but I have to admit I don't particularly feel that way. I skipped 3rd edition, however, spending most of the late 90's/early 00's in other systems. Strongholds, dominions and mass combat definitely strike me as "add on" material. I would have actually been a bit annoyed if those topics had been covered in the first phase of books. Then again, my favorite iteration of Dungeons & Dragons prior to 4e came in red, blue, teal, black and silver boxes, and "elf" was a class. |

| #104enigmashockAug 19, 2008 17:18:43 | No. I think it is a fair assessment. That being said, as the usual DM in my group, I find this a bit of a blessing. I already have players wanting to incorperate FR player goodies before the book is even out, simply based on the sneak previews. I am happy parsing out player updates less frequently as my players are really just getting fluid with 4E, and figuring out their new roles. I am happy giving them new baddies, goodies and whatnot while they level up their guys. |

I agree. My shopping list looks nearly identical to yours. Personally though, I appreciate having a little bit of time between my shopping spurges. It makes things just a little easier on the money-purse, plus I get plenty of time to study and incorporate new material before I go out and buy some more. |

That looks about right (minus a whole bunch of those cards IMO). Although I don't see it as a particularly bad thing. If they're worried about not being able to afford the feast months (July-Unknown) then they can spend the famine months (November to February) saving up. As a DM I certainly appreciate the buyingless months as it will help me in the months where I have to buy a lot. My shopping list as DM is looking like: * August 08 - Forgotten Realms Campaign Guide * September 08 - Adventure Vault, Players Guide to Faerun * October 08 - Yearly subscription to D&D Insider (to save me from needing to buy player-oriented books like Martial Power, Divine Power, etc). * November 08 - Draconomicon I: Chromatic Dragons * December 08 - Manual of the Planes * January 09 - Nothing * February 09 - Nothing * March 09 - PHB2 * April 09 - Nothing * May 09 - MM2 * June 09 - Nothing And that's assuming we decide to stick with Forgotten Realms rather then switch back to Eberron. In comparison to what I would have bought in 2005 if I were a DM: * January, 05 - Nothing * February, 05 - Lost Empires of Faerun * March, 05 - Sandstorm * April, 05 - Lords of Madness: The Book of Aberrations, Races of Eberron * May, 05 - Champions of Ruin, Heroes of Battle * June, 05 - DMG 2, City of Splendors: Waterdeep * July, 05 - Weapons of Legacy * August, 05 - Stormwrack * September, 05 - Magic of Incarnum * October, 05 - Nothing * November, 05 - Champions of Valor * December, 05 - Complete Adventurer, Races of the Wild My wallet is certainly appreciative that they seem to have cut down on the amount of books they're producing ;) |

We keep hearing about we need to get more people to DM, I think thats driven more by a desire to get more people to buy the DM oriented books then an actual belief that there is a shortage of DMs. I mean at either of the shops in town, the notice boards messages are DMs needing players not a bunch of players needing a DM. We need to grow player base, and to do that it would be much better to have a book every other month thats for Players, rather then 3 over the next two months and then nothing for 4 months, then 2 again for Players, then nothing for two months, then 3 again. Comparing 2005 to 2008 or 2009, we can see there will be lots fewer things for sale with 4.0, I know the 3 core books sold really well, but going months without anything useful for your players isnt the best way to keep sales up for any company. -Tig |

One of the things they are trying to do is trim the amount of books that come out just to put books out, like 3.5 did. If you have a customer base of say one million, do you put out one book that 75% of them would buy or three that only 15% would buy each? Plus they seem to be commited to playtesting the contents of the books than in the previous edition. But it does seem that they have accelerated their release schedule somewhat. Bel |

Last month, we had a Module (15% item) and the worst Character Sheets ever done for D&D (hopefully only 15% item). This month we have a Module, DM Screen and FRCG (all 15% items). Next month we have two of the 75% books Adventurers Vault and FRPG, the following month we have Martial Power, another 75% book. Then we have 15% items for November, December, January and February. I'm just saying they should space out the Players items and give themselves a more steady cash flow. Its going to be pretty bare from November until March when we PH2. Sure I am going to buy several of the books, but I dont see a whole lot of players talk about needing the Manual of the Planes, or Draconomicon, or Open Grave or even the Delve book (the one I don't think even I will buy). We have a schedule for a full year from now (Sept 08-Aug 09), there are 8 player oriented books in that list, plus MM2 (which may be interesting for new races) and 4 sets of cards (which are player oriented though I'm not sure how well they are going to sell), and yet they have 2 or even 3 players items coming out on some months and none on others, thats not good planning in my opinion. -Tig |
| #112enigmashockAug 25, 2008 11:04:05 | The problem is that I agree with your comment, and they arent doing that. I am personally not concerned with WotC's P&Ls or market strategy, other than wanting the game to continue. I am sure that they have done very well with 4E Core, and it will get them to their regular schedule next year. I imagine that releasing 3 core books simultaneously requires a relatively heavy chunk of resources in writing, editing, playtesting and artwork - not to mention advertising and promotion. Considering the meager pool of writers that are credited on almost every book, I would say the lack of depth in initial splat-book offerings is due to that backlog and a desire not to "flood" the market with too many books. Keep em wanting more, and parse it out in bite sized chunks that maintain consistent quality and does not break the game system. They are applying a lot of the Magic: The Gathering business model to D&D, and I am sure it will do well for them. Where I think they have shot themselves in the foot is with the DDI content. It is obvious they underestimated the workload they had to deal with as well as the upfront and maintenance expense for digital widgets. That being said, I cant wait for the character creator to go live . . . |

It is obvious they underestimated the workload they had to deal with as well as the upfront and maintenance expense for digital widgets. That being said, I cant wait for the character creator to go live . . . I have to totally agree with that. We were getting Mon, Wed, Fri like clock work for a few weeks, and I'll give them my $60 for a year, but the deadlines shouldnt be that big an issue. If they were putting out a magazine, they would have to make the deadlines. This way they only have to have 1/4 of the magazine a week, it should be easier not harder. I love that they fix errata before they make the document whole, but the last issue, didnt have serveral of the the things fixed, or the majority on the board dont understand several key rules, I'm not sure which is true, but they need to fix it in either case. -Tig |
| #114enigmashockAug 27, 2008 11:52:33 | I guess I dont see that, what am I missing? By switching to 4E in the way they have, they have compartmentalized all of the expandable facets of the game - Damage, source and tool keywords to powers, Power Sources (Arcane, Martial, Primal, et. al), Powers themselves, Paragon Paths (replacing the sloppier PrCs), Epic Destinies, feats (which already followed this in 3E), and as always, weapons and magic goodies. This compartmentalization is exactly how M:TG has been able to keep relatively fresh with new game mechanics. Pick a compartment, say a damage keyword. Create a new type of damage, say "Emotional." Now we have added a new facet to the universe. So now what does this mean for the game? Well, we can create the new "Tearjerker" pact warlock (new Arcane book), who casts "Blinding Insult", using his "Insult Blade" (new Adventurer's vault) and gaining a bonus from his "Heartless Bast**d" feat (new PhB). Unfortunately, he used the power against a "Ravaging Deadheart" (new MM) which has "Resist Emotional 10". Any addition of new mechanics will always result (as it does in M:TG) in an equal and opposite defense and opposite/opposing power based on the particular theme added. From a business standpoint, this is brilliant. You can add support material till you peter out then dovetail new core mechanics into the old ones to refresh the support material well. |

| #129bigbaddaddySep 21, 2008 18:09:50 | 2009. Geez, I thought the virtual tabletop was going to be offered when the phb, dmg & mm1 were issued. All the jazz on the podcasts lead me to the belief that this was going to be the new evolution of the game. I'm not against the 4.0. It's good to improve the game, but does anyone else out there feel like they're being sold the same stuff from previous editions (3.5, 3.0, 2.0...) with more or less a big editting job on the same content? |
| #130enigmashockSep 22, 2008 0:29:14 | Yeah, there aren't even "soft dates" for any of the DDi bits and bops. They are usually couched in the "Soon", "Next" and "Then" categories of time-telling. I don't blame them, WotC is mostly a print and game design firm. All these digital elements are tough and not simply a matter of "well, plug it in here". I think they were taken off-guard by the developmental timeline for all of it. Just think of every contractor you have ever heard give you the "It'll only take 2 weeks" line . . . |

At the same time life is expensive as hell but I cna get around the real worl cost at the cost of some of my pride. So I have a choice between my pride and my hobby and the sad thing is I'm actualy thinking this over. Congrats WotC you've created a game so good that I would consider the above problem a problem. |

I am getting tired of reading 'Coming Soon'. I realize you will need a subscription to access these tools. I had heard there was upcoming beta testing for the Character Builder but I haven't seen it yet. No one here to the best of my knowledge has any inside information(.....although I have been accused of it before). As such we have no knowledge, and truth be told the developers likely only have a vague idea. From what I recall the plan at the moment is that the Character Builder enters closed beta this month and shortly afterwards enters an open beta. Once the beta period is over, it will switch over the paid access(with a demo version also being available). I don't recall any time specifics being mentioned for the Dungeon Builder and Character Visualizer beyond being after the Character Builder and being before the Game Table. The Game Table has been stated as likely coming out next year. Any future questions would likely be best suited for the D&D Insider forums as every once in a while someone who is working either on it or with the people who are working on it posts there and they would have better info then any other forum posters. |

If you list it, it will be bought. 8 classes equals 8 decks, right? I'd imagine for $80, the display has one of each. EDIT: In fact, as it retails at exactly the price of 8 decks, I'd say it's a pretty safe bet. |
| #150enigmashockOct 21, 2008 19:30:58 | Fair enough . . .Well it is listed none-the-less. If that is the case, I will move it under "power cards" when I have confirmation. |

| #161BelorinNov 07, 2008 6:06:31 | With the PHB 2 due out in March of 2009, MM 2 due out in May and the DMG 2 out in September; a slipcase is unlikely. Link Bel |
| #162gloreindlNov 07, 2008 15:16:11 | Maybe it's just me, but seeing that there are no new FR products lined up for 2009 sort of makes me happy after the treatment (read - raping and pillaging of the campaign) by WoTC. I plan to run a campaign set in the FR (as it is my favorite campaign setting ever in 28 years of being a player and a DM), but will be setting it in the time of 3.5E, even though I will likely use the 4E core rules, with some house rules. |
| #163DragonOfLightNov 07, 2008 20:12:46 | If I correctly understand WotC's plans for releases, there won't be any more releases for Forgotten Realms for 4E (except for maybe Dungeon and Dragon articles). I really think it is too soon to tell. You also have this ongoing stream of core modules that should shift over at some point to more campaign-centric modules. WotC does not gain by birthing and abandoning campaigns, they are responding to the highest demand (FR and Eberron) and will undoubtedly support their releases as they go. Right now we can only see a glimpse into Q3 2009. If you look at the volume of what's coming out this year, I would say they will fill in the schedule without a doubt. My guess is they have a pretty solid plan for 2008-2010, producing the Core Books I-III, 3 campaigns (the third unknown, but could be Dragonlance, Greyhawk, Darksun or even Spelljammer) and a slew of core modules, ad. vaults, and power splatbooks. After that they will need to come in and fill in the cracks with more monster splatbooks, location/environment splatbooks, and campaign books. I think patience will be key. |

I don't think they are going to go the route of making additional books for the campaign settings after they have been released. I seem to recall a developer once made a comment that campaign splat boks are basically diminishing returns. To begin with, you are basically alienating a portion of your potential audience who doesn't play in that campaign setting. And even among the people who play in that campaign setting, only a small amount will buy the splat books, and those splat books take just as much effort and resources as making a setting neutral book that will likely havve a much larger audience. If they have ideas on support for a campaign setting, then I think it is much more likely that we will get a Dragon article about that aspect fo the campaign then a book. They'll find other ways to fill the cracks in the release schedule, like Martial Power II!:D |

| #175enigmashockDec 03, 2008 11:14:22 | Are they really releasing THAT many products in March? That's a crazy number of releases, how much can actually sell? To be fair, it is just PHBII, Assault on Nightwyrm Fortress, and the PHB and Martial Power Cards. It just looks like a lot when it is all laid out like that. I am curious how well the Power cards will fare in the face of the character generator being as badarse as it is. I know, personally, I won't bother as long as I have the generator up and running, but I know that there will be a contingent of people who will never go DDi. They certainly have the infrastructure to print large quantities of cards cheaply, and I would hazard a guess that they will be the same size and shape as Magic cards to reduce costs and retooling, not to mention all of the ready-made periphery products like card sleeves. |

And I just realized upon seeing the color version that Vecna is on the cover. So I've got $10 down on Vecna being statted out in Open Grave, which would bring us up to two statted out dieites. Whoo! I'll match your bet and bet on Nerull being statted. Call it a chump's bet. Want to take me up on it? ![]() |
| #178enigmashockDec 12, 2008 14:25:40 | I feel your pain. I want my PHBII, Arcane Power, Divine Power and Primal Power and Eberron goodies already! |
| #179enigmashockDec 18, 2008 11:51:53 | ***UPDATED*** Housekeeping. Removed Demon Queen, Manual of the Planes. |
| #180BolongoDec 21, 2008 4:30:52 | I'm wondering if you shouldn't start including minis on this list, since the new line will be RPG-centric? |
| #181enigmashockDec 21, 2008 11:37:17 | I'm wondering if you shouldn't start including minis on this list, since the new line will be RPG-centric? yeah, I've been considering it. Maybe over the holidays. I also need to update to "2009/2010" |
| #182pholtusDec 27, 2008 12:25:57 | Martial Power - Power Cards Are listed with a May 19th release date on Amazon - you have them as March - I'm guessing that is right - so they don't overload stores with them all at once. Allowing them to spread out there sales |
| #183enigmashockDec 27, 2008 13:56:43 | Martial Power - Power Cards ***FIXED*** Ooops! I guess it was an error on my part. |
| #184joydyheeDec 30, 2008 8:41:29 | Draconomicon 2: Metallic Dragons is out 11/2009. |

| #190doctorhookJan 06, 2009 0:04:10 | ***MODS!*** Can't you just retitle the thread? |
| #191enigmashockJan 06, 2009 1:43:19 | Can't you just retitle the thread? Apparently not, or they can but I can't. Besides, most of the comments in here are about stuff that is already out, why not start fresh? |
| #192doctorhookJan 06, 2009 14:25:49 | Apparently not, or they can but I can't. Besides, most of the comments in here are about stuff that is already out, why not start fresh? Are you sure? Because I just changed the title of a thread I had started. (Maybe it's different because this thread is stickied.) Did you try clicking "Go Advanced"? Sorry, if you did already try this. I just thought it would be simpler to edit an existing stickied thread than to get a new thread stickied. |
| #193enigmashockJan 06, 2009 14:36:21 | As I said in the other thread, the Sticky won't change. Does anyone know the Mod for this forum? |
| #194doctorhookJan 06, 2009 14:39:49 | As I said in the other thread, the Sticky won't change. Does anyone know the Mod for this forum? This might be an abuse of the feature, but if you use the report thread button, it'll get the attention it deserves once a VCL looks at it. |
| #195enigmashockJan 06, 2009 14:43:33 | I did that. I hate to get on the wrong side of the Mods, but I don't know who is who anymore. Thanks for all your help Dr. |

| #197ranadielJan 06, 2009 15:34:51 | I did that. I hate to get on the wrong side of the Mods, but I don't know who is who anymore. Oh sure you thank him when I already went through the proper channels to get the job done(mind you it isn't a fast process). I see how it is. ![]() |
| #198enigmashockJan 06, 2009 15:50:50 | Oh sure you thank him when I already went through the proper channels to get the job done(mind you it isn't a fast process). I see how it is. How do I know what you're doing? Lol~! Thanks Ranadiel, you are, as always, a sage in these matters. |
