What can we expect in PHB3?

As more and more stuff for the PHB3 is revealed, I thought I would update an ongoing tally as to how much room the PHB3 has for stuff.

Based on PHB2 we have the following number of pages:

  • Total Pages - 234
    • Title Page, Credits and Contents - 3 pages

    • Introduction - 2 pages

    • Races - 24 pages (2 pages for chapter intro, 2 pages per race, 1 page per racial paragon path)

    • Classes - 146 pages (2 pages for chapter intro, approximately 17 pages per class, 5 pages for epic destinies)

    • Character Options - 42 pages (2 pages for chapter intro, 6 pages for backgrounds, 13 pages for feats and multiclassing, 14 pages for items, 7 pages for rituals)

    • Errata - 5 pages

    • Glossary and Index - 1 page

    • Advertisement - 1 page

Based on that and the previews I feel I can make the following estimate for PHB3.

Player's Handbook 3 Page Breakdown

  • Total Pages - 234 (confirmed)
    • Title Page, Credits and Contents - 3 pages

    • Introduction - 2 pages

    • Races - 14 pages (2 pages for chapter intro, 2x4 pages for 4 races, 1x4 pages for 4 racial paragon paths)

    • Classes - 126 pages (2 pages for chapter intro, approximately 17x7 pages for 7 classes, 5 pages for epic destinies)

    • Character Options - 51 pages (2 pages for chapter intro, 6 pages for backgrounds, 13 pages for feats and multiclassing, 14 pages for items, 7 pages for rituals+9 pages for skill powers)

    • Hybrids - 31 pages (6 page intro, 1x25 pages for 25 classes)

    • Errata - 5 pages

    • Glossary and Index - 1 page

    • Advertisement - 1 page

I simply do not see enough room for an 8th class. Its confirmed we'll have 4 races, so I'm confident that section will be 14 pages long. Character Options might be a little bit bigger, or a little bit smaller. But I will be surprised if its 12 pages bigger or smaller. Whereas Hybrids are a fairly accurate estimate IMO based on their appearance in the Dragon Magazines.

As such, Classes should be fairly accurate as well, unless WotC pulls out another new mechanic in addition to what we've seen so far.

Some of those extra pages should get eaten up by Skill Powers.

So far, what I have seen and have tride has been great.

I'd give maybe a few of those errata pages to magic items ... Superior Implements are slated for PH3 after being bumped from AV2 due to space.

I'm surprised that there's enough room for a 7th class, between all the stuff that had been mentionned, I sorta assumed that there would only be six.

That's already covered in Character Options (I estimated about 9 pages for them given we've got about half the powers).

I did have the racial chapter wrong (correct in what I included, I just added up the math wrong). So there are exactly 5 pages for errata, just like in PHB2 (although again, I'm hoping they'll instead appear in the other sections like people above have speculated).

A few play testers I run around with have said that "legacy Weapons/items" are going to be re-introduced to 4E. The problem is balance, some of the old items will be left out due to being very over powered for 4E. The problem I see is the personal cost/penalties to the PC. Some do not exist anymore, like caster level, spell slots and caster check penalty.

I figured those were just called "Artifacts" now. :P

Last month's Dragon introduced Paragon Paths that have a requirement of being either multi-classed or a Hybird.  I expect more of these in the PHB3, which means less room for other things.  Like a 7th and 8th class.

I still think there will only be 6 classes.

That's a fair guess. Although are we going to 16 to 17 of them? I find that doubtful, so I'll be curious to see where the extra pages go to. Perhaps items?

I don't.  Assuming 6 new classes in PH3, and not counting the DDi exclusive Assassin, their will be 24 different class in total.  Thats 276 pairings.  There's nowhere near enough pages to cover every such combination, and it would seem odd to cover only a random subsection.  I expect such dual-class paths to continue appearing in Dragon, but I don't expect to see them in any prominence in a printed book.

That said, while I would count my self among those hoping for 8 new classes, I wouldn't be at all surprised if there where only 6.

No, its a D&D insider only class. It will never be printed on paper, unless wizards changes its mind.
