| #1greylordSep 11, 2008 18:53:53 | It sounds as if all we can expect is some silver paint on the cover? Is there ANY reason at all to get this. When it sounded like there were going to be Leather versions, I was VERY gung ho about this, but if this is all that it is going to be...it sounds as if I shouldn't get it. Is there ANYONE who knows what exactly a foil cover is? Is it that same stuff that flakes off very easily? I want something that at least FEELS like it's somewhat superior, even if it's not completely superior for what you pay. Hence, I'm wondering what exactly this foil cover is, and why it makes the books deluxe, which will in turn determine whether I still decide to buy the "Deluxe" versions or not, and whether they really are Deluxe...or just "deluxe" versions in my book. (AKA...I'll get Deluxe versions...I won't get..."deluxe" versions). |
| #2kalstrandSep 11, 2008 19:31:50 | My guess is they will look like the foil Magic cards. |
| #3blu_skreemSep 12, 2008 23:14:28 | I've been kind of wondering what's up with the Deluxe Edition myself. I never saw the 3.X deluxe editions, what made them special, was it cover alone? The Player’s Handbook presents the official Dungeons & Dragons Roleplaying Game rules as well as everything a player needs to create D&D characters worthy of song and legend: new character races, base classes, paragon paths, epic destinies, powers, magic items, weapons, armor, and much more. Does this mean there will be new classes and races in the deluxe edition? I'm sure I would of heard of this by now, but like i said I'm not exactaly sure what is so special about this eddition. |
| #4superdeadsmurfSep 12, 2008 23:42:40 | As someone who lived through the 90s comics cover craze!!! foil embossed covers are very cool. They're like thick shiny plastic with ridges and stuff to define what's on them. They usually stay in great shape, any colouring on them may rub off over time if heavily used, depending on the process they use. Wizards likely has a good one since they've been working with holograms, foils and other shiny materials for almost 10 years now, they probably have something pretty good. Embossed foil looks awesome, but doesn't scan or photograph well usually, so you won't get that good of an idea from that. The last (leatherbound) deluxe books had silver or gold (can't remember off hand) edged pages and a built in bookmark, I'd expect something similar. |

| #6ostrakonSep 13, 2008 11:13:24 | it isn't even getting the errata FAIL |
| #7aramis_the_redSep 13, 2008 17:25:10 | FAIL EPIC FAIL |
| #8transformer_dupSep 13, 2008 17:32:28 | You know perfectly well that if Wizards included the errata in the deluxe core books thousands of people would come here to **** and moan about the money-grubbing company trying to force all their players to buy the most expensive books available. It really is a lose-lose situation for Wizards (unless they, you know, didn't release books in need of 11 pages of errata in the first place). |
| #9greylordSep 13, 2008 18:01:23 | Yes, the more I look at these "Deluxe" editions, the less impressed I get. This is the first place that comes up when looking up foil Embossed on Yahoo...and it looks like they take the normal book and put foil on it. http://www.riversidegroup.com/html/foil-p.html THEN, they will put gold paint on the edge of the book and a ribbon...all of which doesn't really impress. I'd say...maybe $5 more then the normal books, from the sounds of it unless it is LEATHER with the embossing on it or some other material of superior quality. Otherwise, this sounds like CHEAP, CHEAP, CHEAP with NO errata, and no nothing else. I was hoping they would clear it up here so it didn't sound quite so CHEAP. I mean...REALLY CHEAP. If it's what it's sounding like...I'd also agree with epic fail. I can "foil" emboss mine for even cheaper then "5" if that's what they want, on a normal book just rub the foil of whatever material you want onto the cover...cover it with a light film of invisible protection and then a light coat of gold on the covers...and except the ribbon, I've done it for less then $5 even. Hmmm, gives me an idea...perhaps I could offer a service to "deluxe" everyone else's books who want "Deluxe" editions for $10 a piece, meaning that they would pay a max of $50 (afterall, gotta pay for that shipping) for basically the same stuff offered by Wizards for $86? Or maybe reduce it down to $5, with optional shipping and people to pick it up...for a $40 price tag. I mean, this looks like something I could even do on my own! On the otherhand, Wizards probably would try to do a money thing and sue me simply because I know how easy and cheap it could be to do this? Why would we pay for something that cheap? Or can Wizards reassure me for any reason why the Deluxe books are special and really Deluxe? MAYBE...just MAYBE they mean that it's going to be a THICK embossed cover with the stuff actually being able to be engraved into it? That's beyond my abilities, and NOT cheap. However, some word on whether it's the CHEAP form (which from the looks and the sounds of it, sounds like what they could be doing...OR the EXPENSIVE form which is actually worth it, would be nice. |
| #10woifSep 16, 2008 9:51:13 | Am I the only who's ****** they didn't release these with the normal core rule books. I would have been more than glad to pay the extra for the cool foil whatever, but definatly not when I already have a set of books. |
| #11Cpt_MichaSep 16, 2008 10:14:40 | You know perfectly well that if Wizards included the errata in the deluxe core books thousands of people would come here to **** and moan about the money-grubbing company trying to force all their players to buy the most expensive books available. It really is a lose-lose situation for Wizards (unless they, you know, didn't release books in need of 11 pages of errata in the first place). As opposed to the countless pages of the 3e books? They aren't even full pages either. Just sections addressed in specific instances. Not entire page replacements. Think Foil Magic Card if you want an idea what the Deluxe books are like. Except with gold edging on the pages of course and the book mark. (It's a fairly high quality foil too from what I've had experience with if it's the same stuff they used on Magic) |
| #12edpoviSep 16, 2008 14:03:46 | Has there been any WoTC comment on if the deluxe books will include errata? While embossed leather and foil covers with gilded edges and a ribbon is very nice, included errata would make it much more interesting to me and more likely to purchase. |
| #13ranadielSep 16, 2008 14:57:06 | Has there been any WoTC comment on if the deluxe books will include errata? Someone has previosuly emailed WotC and they were told it would not have errata. |
| #14greylordSep 16, 2008 16:47:10 | Is it embossed Leather? I was under the impression it was embossed on material similar to what the books are on already. If it's on leather, I WILL buy them. I'm just wanting someone who could have a definate answer on this. |
| #15transformer_dupSep 16, 2008 18:30:33 | As opposed to the countless pages of the 3e books? I didn't mean to imply that 4th edition's books were worse edited than 3.0 or 3.5's books. And a certain amount of errata is acceptable; no one can foresee every possible munchkinism. But there are dozens of mistakes in the 4th edition core rulebooks that should have been caught before printing and you know it. |
| #16drake_vampiel_dSep 17, 2008 5:03:00 | this seems to be another way for WOTC to rip off the 4E suckers at least with 3.5 they had tons of books and a PHB II with a fairly decent system that was working before trying to come out with special versions of the PHB, DMG, and MM. The fact is they are going to give a jacked up system (4E) a shiny cover and a ribbon page marker to try to get teh people who were smart enough not to waste money on the original set of 4E stuff (I wish I had been smart enough not to get the 4E stuff, after having trying it out and playing it so don't think I'm just disappointed in 4E without having given it a fair shake, for all of you going to call me a troll I tryed it and gave it a fair chance to prove all the people bashing it but I found the entire 4E system to be horrid the only good thing I found was you permanently die when you reach -1/2 your max HP which I integrated into my 3.5 game) hoping that people would want it more since it's shiny. The least WOTC could have done was get PHB 2-whatever number they will need to have to fix the garbage that is 4E. In the end they are showing how little they think of the people that play 4E by trying to appease the mistakes they made with a shiny cover. |

But there are dozens of mistakes in the 4th edition core rulebooks that should have been caught before printing and you know it. Oh I'm not going to argue that. Like the Winter Frost Touch Frost Rogue Issue. I spot that one a mile off. (But then I hadn't been slaving away at a game for years on end, with everything staring me in the face ((I think they could have rotated some play testers or what not out and done a little better but at least they bothered testing this time)) Serpent Steel whatever and Dance of Steel for another. But I think that was a typo of epic proportions. Overall I'm saying they did a much better job with this go around's books (and the timelyness of the errata) than what we had before. So they are trying at least. |
| #18athzarSep 18, 2008 15:40:17 | this seems to be another way for WOTC to rip off the 4E suckers at least with 3.5 they had tons of books Yeah, Third Edition released with years of material right at launch. Still not sure how they pulled that one off; it was pretty incredible. |

| #20telvin3dSep 18, 2008 22:47:45 | this seems to be another way for WOTC to rip off the 4E suckers I fail to follow the logic. You don't have to buy these books. For that matter, Wizards isn't even saying that you SHOULD buy these books, let alone need to for any reason. Wizards is doing a limited run of higher quality books for those who want them. Some people use their books heavily or else enjoy having something a little unusual. So, if having a little better binding, better quality paper and a neat cover is worth a little more to you, this edition might be of interest. If those things don't get you excited, then pass. There is no advantage being given to those who buy these books. They don't get a unique class or race or preferential treatment at conventions. You are not missing out on anything by not purchasing this book. So I fail to see why you should be so hostile to the thought of other people enjoying the chance to purchase something just because you don't want it. |
| #21gekkostate88Sep 20, 2008 15:45:26 | this seems to be another way for WOTC to rip off the 4E suckers at least with 3.5 they had tons of books and a PHB II If you don't like 4E, I thinks it's best to intelligently elaborate on your criticisms of 4e, instead of using vagueries such as "jacked up". And, if you really don't want to be perceived as a troll, then refrain from calling those who like 4E-or buy any 4E books-suckers. You'd be offended if someone called you a sucker for continuing to play 3.5E or for having spent your hard earned money on any of those "tons of 3.5E supplements". It's not difficult for us to respect one another's choices and show tolerance and a sense of community. Regarding the OP, I feel the embossed covers are not significant enough for me to justify buying them. Now, if they contained errata and were leatherbound, then I would buy them. For others, the embossed covers may be very attractive and warrant purchase, and I don't fault them at all for purchasing something they like ![]() |
| #22WolfStar76Sep 22, 2008 6:47:21 | Nothing new, it isn't even getting the errata, just fancy new packaging. As of today's Ask Wizards on the WotC home page: Q: Do the Deluxe Core Rulebooks contain updates? http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/4ask/20080922 |
| #23greylordOct 23, 2008 15:08:04 | Well, it seems overall I was spot on. The embossing seems to be slightly higher quality then that of which will flake off, which is a good thing. However, it is a cheap embossment. I would hope that they would have had an entire foil cover with the metal/plastic engraved in. As it stands, it's merely a foil cover like some comics have had (which someone pointed out) which raises the price on a comic around $3 USD. Add to that the gilt on the pages which should add about $5 USD...and the nice bookmark. I can't tell for certain, and I'm not about to do a chem test, on whether the paper actually is superior quality or not. However, overall, maybe worth about $10 more in value...so should be around $45 to $50 instead of the amount they are charging retail. They should have had the cover with embossing and engraved, with figures that you can actually feel like something important... With the errata tossed in (haven't checked to verify that), if you can find a copy cheaper than retail, and around that range, you may consider getting these, otherwise...NOT WORTH IT! Which isn't a surprise though, if you see what I was evaluating prior to seeing the Deluxe copies. |
| #24divinedragoonxdOct 24, 2008 18:09:45 | Well, it seems overall I was spot on. The embossing seems to be slightly higher quality then that of which will flake off, which is a good thing. ??? I didnt get a bookmark in any of my Deluxe books ??? Did I get duds or is that just speculation? |
| #25greylordOct 25, 2008 12:28:59 | You should have gotten several of them, whatever you call them. Clarification...it's not the bookmark like the 3.5 deluxe editions, this is the type that you put to bookmark things, like markers (not the highligher types, the other type of book mark marker types...sorry, not sure what else to call them)? |
| #26divinedragoonxdOct 25, 2008 16:25:36 | You should have gotten several of them, whatever you call them. All I had recieved was just the books themselves, cover, binder, pages, ink and rules. |
| #27TempestLAOct 26, 2008 14:38:10 | A very good review of the Starter Set, Advanced Books, and new mini changes can be found here: http://www.aintitcool.com/node/38821 On the subject of the Deluxe Editions: "DUNGEONS & DRAGONS DELUXE EDITION CORE RULE BOOKS Okay, this one is only for the hard core, strictly for the headstrong. Are you ready? There’s not really too much to say about the Deluxe Editions. They’re the Core Rulebooks, only souped up unto cool looking display quality books that look great on a bookshelf. If you’re the kind of guy who wants to walk into the gamestore or Gencon looking like you have the most disposable income of anyone there, these are the books you want to slam down on the table. Glossy 3-D effect foil covers with an enlarged section of the original artwork cover about 75% of the front and back of each book while a silver protective spine covers just enough to keep finger prints off the slick, evocative art. All the info, barcodes and reference numbers come on a disposable cardboard sleeve so the book you have says only DUNGEONS & DRAGONS and the title of the book. On a shelf it kind of gives off that old school collectible TIME LIFE BOOKS look. And the paper has a silver edging like that of expensive gift books. The big news is that the boys in charge learned from the mistake of the 3E Leather-bound Deluxe Editions of old and ACTUALLY INCORPERATED ERRATA. Yep, this time when you drop $75 on a rulebook, they actually took the time to fix all the typos and add those necessary passages. While I haven’t gone line by line through the book to check for any misspellings or out of place numbers, I did go through the official updates and noted that all of the relevant passage changes noted there made their way into the Deluxe Editions. So having these books on your table means not needing to look up the errata online or double checking a printed up sheet. These have come in pretty handy this week as I gear up to play my first game of 4E as a PLAYER. My group just wrapped up my long running campaign and WotC freelancer Ari Marmell has taken over duties as DM. So I’ve been twinking out my character and cross-checking rules. Ari has used me for years to help break his stuff, so he’s fully prepared to face the full might of my twinkiness – not that it’s possible right now to do more than crank out a few extra points of damage by optimizing. But I’m gonna see what I can do. Having books on hand with all the errata in them has made my life just a wee bit easier. The long and the short of it is that these are the Deluxe Editions. They’re $75 a pop. You already know whether or not you’ve got the scratch to drop on them. But they sure are pretty." |
| #28Xeviat-DMNov 01, 2008 3:18:30 | The 3E deluxe books had thicker paper as well; it wasn't just the gilded edges. I want at least the PHB; if I can get a friend who didn't buy a PHB to buy my regular one, I might get one. |
| #29alaxia_xxudNov 03, 2008 18:40:36 | Can anyone post some photos of these books? The picture provided by Wizards doesn't do a lot for me, I'd like to see what's so special about them before I decide whether to order them. Thanks. |
| #30divinedragoonxdNov 04, 2008 8:48:59 | The 3E deluxe books had thicker paper as well; it wasn't just the gilded edges. No trust, no thicker pages, seems to be actually thinner. Think Bible, rice paper. |
| #31royalblueeyesNov 04, 2008 8:57:50 | No trust, no thicker pages, seems to be actually thinner. Think Bible, rice paper. ...And I've torn my fair share of bible pages...before the whole theological rebirth. |
| #32drake_vampiel_dNov 26, 2008 15:52:01 | Yeah, Third Edition released with years of material right at launch. Still not sure how they pulled that one off; it was pretty incredible. 3rd ed may not have released all of thier info all at once but they didn't put out special edition PHB, DMG, and MM right at the begining of 3rd or 3.5 either. they allowed the system to work out and add to it and then just before putting out an inferior product (opinion) they put out the special edition of the core books. |
| #33drake_vampiel_dNov 26, 2008 15:58:59 | I fail to follow the logic. You don't have to buy these books. For that matter, Wizards isn't even saying that you SHOULD buy these books, let alone need to for any reason. Your right I don't have to buy the books but if WOTC didn't want people to buy them they wouldn't put them out. they are doing a higher quality (looking) book with inferior quality of gaming The idea behind putting something out like the laminated cover books is for people who use thier books alot but they could wait to fix 4ED before putting out a book that just looks fancyer than the original. It would be like selling a car that had all the bells and whistles but no motor in it. your right they aren't gettign anything special hence they are getting the same low grade of gaming that the people who get ripped off buying the regular 4 ED stuff get I'm not hostile towards people who want to buy the laminated 4 ED books it is thier money to waste I'm just informing that to buy those is a waste |
