What if it's a new setting in 2010?

I just want to know:

What if the 2010 setting isn't Dragonlance, Dark Sun, or even anything we know, but a new, original setting?

It would have new features, and wouldn't step on any other settings toes: as different as Eberron to FR.

Your thoughts?

I be cool with that, well depending on what kind of setting it is, obviously :P I am sure too we all have our own ideas of what we would like to see in a new setting. My own be in the New Weird and Steampunk style; bizarre races, steampunk technology, highly urbanized, modernized ideas and terminology, could have Aether and Aether Ships, the weird and bizarre is right there in front of you, ie; can't base your view of something on any old ideas, etc.

Maybe something Lovecraftian?

Frankly, anything would be better than Dragonlance. I still haven't discovered what makes it different from FR other than geography and politics.

IIRC, WotC needs to do something with all of the old settings it has rights to or it will lose those rights, hence why they're doing a setting a year and only doing two setting books and an adventure for each. If they're going to pull out something brand new, my bet is that it'll be once they've put out Dark Sun, Dragonlance, and all the other old fan favorites.

I would definitely give it a look. Considering how much I enjoy the most recent setting, Eberron, I would be willing to take a chance on something new.

I'd absolutely check out a new setting, but actually buying it would depend on the new class and new races.

You know I wonder, while the concept the new setting has may not go with some. The fact that there is no preconceptions, and that we don't really know what will be inside, ie; we know what to expect with Dark Sun, FR, Eberron, etc. That could boost sales for a new setting out of sheer curiosity.

Won't happen. The earliest we'll see an entirely new setting is probably not going to be until after the last of the main power sources (ie Shadow and Elemental) are released in a PHB.

I would disagree with that, I think that 2011(a year before I expect to see all the remaining power sources released) has a fairly decent chance of being a brand new setting. Although obviously at this point that is just opinion and nothing else. *shrugs*

It'd be cool if it was, but it would really have to leap out at me. I'm not sure if I'd take the initiative and try it out for myself. At worst, I'd just find anything I like, rip it out, and place it in my FR and homebrew games.

I'd give it a look also, but it would have to have a fantastic hook if I were to buy it.

Maybe something Lovecraftian?

God I hope not.:P

A new setting would be interesting depending on what it was. Barring a setting completely played underwater, a western with guns, spurs and gold miners or a modern day setting, we already have everything covered.

I would actually like a brand new setting, this way I could actually play 4e and run it. I can't use 4e rules with previous settings because to me and my players it just doesn't feel right. With a new setting we could get passed that roadblock and enjoy 4e for what it is. A completely different game with the D&D brand name stamped on it.;)

But I'm looking forward to any and all new fluff for the DS and DL settings.

I would be very interested in a new setting, I would like to see a setting that fully incorporates the new elements of 4e. Specifically, I would like to see the Feywild integrated fully into the setting as well as dragonborn and tieflings as key races in the world.

From what I can see Core 4e sold/sells well, 4e FR sold/sells well, 4e Eberron has not sold well.

They would take a big chance in having 2 bad years of sales of a setting by putting out an unknown setting. Its the same reason I cant see them doing DS in 2010. I can see them putting out some novels next year in preparation for 2011 so they can gauge interest.

Hasn't 4E Eberron been doing very well? Not necessarily better than core or FR, but I would imagine its sales are strong?

Depends on what it is. To me, High Fantasy/Swords and Sorcery are pretty well covered. Anything that breaks the mold, ala Eberron, Urban Arcana, Dark Sun, would get my dollars. Don't know if I'd play it/run it until I read it.

Keep in mind, though, that they work a considerable amount of time in advance, so by the time Eberron came out and, if your belief is true, sold badly it would still be too late to change the setting for the next year. Basically they have to work to make each product interesting on its own, because they can't rely on data of recent sales to inform near future product decision, it's just too late at that point.

We have been told it is something we would recognize. That would lead one to believe it is a property they own, either an old setting or a property we have not seen as a setting yet, or a reimaging of an older setting. Either way it doesn't bode well for an entirely new setting.

I want to see the setting that landed 2nd place to Eberron (which they still have rights to, and no one has heard anything about). That would certainly be "new".

But we were told it was something familiar. I'd rather have DS than DL, if only because DL seems too much like FR to me. I don't run a setting as is because they just don't tickle my fancy (although if I still had my old group, we might have picked up Eberron), and DL doesn't really seem to be anything... "new".

I'd like to see where you get this bit of information because the way I hear it told, the FRCG is the only 4e book to bomb and I've heard nothing but glowing frothing praise for Eberron.

Yes they have said it will be a setting that we would recognize, that dose not mean it will be an old D&D setting. WoTC dose have another fantasy game that they have created an elaborate background for, Magic: The Gathering has many worlds that could make an iteresting new D&D setting.

Indications are that it won't be a completely new setting, unfortunately. I would love something new and unique.

I think it would be pretty awesome if they made a pseudo-historical setting based on our own world, with a fantasy twist. All the legends and fairy tales and monsters that we know and love actually exist, as does magic. King Arthur really did pull a sword from the stone. Merlin uses true magic. There are manticores and hydras lurking around in Greece. Djinnis and sphinxes roam the deserts of Egypt. Atlantis does exist.

I think this would be a pretty cool idea. There are plenty of movies out there that explore this sort of scenario. For example, in 300 we had Persians riding colossal elephants and wierd deformed ogre monsters. There have been plenty of movies based on Greek mythology.

Please WotC, publish this campaign!

Funny you should mention this...

I noticed something in the Editorial for Dragon today. Chris Youngs mentioned Chris Perkins' weekly game and went on to mention the campaign setting was "world of small islands and large oceans". Add to that the Human Pirate from the MM2 and I think we might actually be getting a new setting. It's been mentioned before, I believe, that a "waterworld/pirate" setting was being kicked around. Maybe that's the "surprise" we will be getting.

It's got my vote!

My FLGS and local Borders BOTH told me the Eberron Player's Guide sold out the first day it was released and it took 2 weeks to get more in stock from the distributor.

The article makes absolutely no mention of the setting that Chris Perkins plays/DMs is the next setting, just that it is what Chris does.

And nowhere in my post did I say that it had, I was merely speculating and saying what if.

Next time, read it slower.

I would love to see a totally new setting, such as one of the other two contest finalist settings. However, I don't think it is likely for 2010. I do think that it is very likely that 2011 will bring one of those settings, though.

Personally, I think it would be in WotC's best interest to do at least one new campaign world from the ground up for 4E. It did seem to work well for 3E's Eberron and the multitude of campaign worlds that came out and are beloved from 2E. 4E needs something it can claim to be all its own.

The implied setting seems to be doing that, though it would be nice for WotC to take it a step further and make it into a full setting. Because most of what we know about the setting is the Nentir Vale, WotC has a pretty empty slate otherwise. They could make the setting into just about anything, and players that want a traditional, pseudo-European setting can just stick to the Nentir Vale.
