No, this is not a foretelling of doom, but a genuine question. What do you think will/want to come next for forth edition, in any way?

Epic monsters and adventures.

I'll second the epic monsters, but I'd say epic ANYTHING. Epic adventures would be great.

Seeker support.

Haha, never.

I don't even like the class, but it's frustrating what they've done in regards to the Seeker and Runepriest (nothing).

Epic Cat and Fox Girls.. err.. .I mean loads of Epic Support including a huge DMG with tastey bits.

And maybe another tier gets added called Mythic when the Epic just isnt good enough. ... well it could happen.

The only difference between avenging paladins and avengers is the former's penchant for heavy armor.  Aside from that they're religious zealots swinging big weapons.  You shouldn't have to build a whole class around prefering lighter armor -

As an extreme example of how much cleaner the whole thing could be (not that I'd expect this):  You could have Source provide a list of powers that evoke the source, and Role provide a set of features that support the role, and the intersection of the two need be nothing more than that.  More concrete concepts could be left to Themes, with small power and feature sets that you optionally swap out Source powers and Role features to get.

I totally agree, the Avenger could be a Paladin subclass, the Seeker a Ranger subclass (I also think the Warden could have been a Ranger Defender subclass), the Shaman a Druid subclass etc.

And I too have been thinking of pick a Power Source, pick a Role, and depending on what Role you pick, that could add Class Features and riders to certain Powers from the chosen Source.  I mean, looking at the Arcane power source, you could pretty much have one class: Wizard, and all permutations thereof, could be subclasses (Artificer, Sorcerer, Warlock ec); maybe even go back to a 2nd Ed Groupings style set-up.

There's a whole lot of ideas 4th edition is able to do - apart from filling out either missing fan-favourite stuff from older editions (where are my Blues and playable Kobolds, I say? - or Book of Exalted Deeds for that matter), or filling out missing books that just ask to be released (Heroes of the Astral Sea, Heroes of the Far Realm, etc.), there is still a host of potentially great concepts that can be done. Underwater combat and underwater monsters and races (which are not just regular races with "aquatic" slapped in front of the name) - you can make whole worlds with that kind of climate. Or even release forgotten campaign settings, or make new ones. But they won't do it. Why?

Because they're more content with bleeding Forgotten Realms dry. They're complacent with just hammering out the same product over and over again, because "it's popular", and not risking a new product. If humanity always had similar attitude - we would still live in caves, because Joe the Caveman would be too afraid of risking to start his own fire. You sometimes need to risk creating something new - because it may turn out great and sell far better than an overdone setting.

I'm very afraid we will now see just filling out of certain niches, and have the edition end up very soon. I don't want it to happen, but seeing Forgotten Realms as a next year setting again is just crushing my hopes.

I did some brainstorming on this issue, over on my blog.
Without the benefit of a sounding board, I managed to easily think of 9 book (12 with some riskier books), which could easily carry 4e into the first quarter of 2014 (9 books, released one every 2 months, for 18 months of product).  Slip a couple campaign settings in there and a could experimental books and we're covered until after GenCon 2014.

If you start with the assumption "4e is exhuasted, what's left?" of course it gets hard thinking of books.  But when you approach the problem "hey, what would I like to see more of?" or "what did they do in earlier editions that they haven't touched yet?" and ideas start opening up. You start thinking "what would a 4e update of Chronomancer look like? Is that a wizard build or a whole new power source?" And, BAM, you have a new book.

As I've read your blog, Jester, I agree that there are still a lot of potential ideas for future books. The thing is, will Wizards use them? Next year we're having another piece of Forgotten Realms for a campaign setting (as far as we know now), which doesn't bode well for the effort in creativity they're willing to make for the rest of this edition.

Quite honestly "classes" without strong role corellation seem useless ie they seem like categories without bite ... might as well do that classless D&D and no I dont consider that good

Why not a new approach on the minis?

start with humans and give two males and two females of every class in the first players handbook, then go Dragonborn warlord, paladin, and fighter 2 male and 2 female. 12 minis in a box heroic tier. followed by paragon and epic. You can do dwarves next and so on giving the with the basic choices and looks first and when the line is done go into PHB 2 and PHB3.

Most important of all MAKE THEM LOOK AWESOME

I like this idea.
