What will be the next big power source?

In PHB1 Martial was the big power source (as in, the one with the most classes). In PHB2 its been guessed that Primal will be the big power source with 4 primal classes.

What do people think will be the big one in PHB3?

On the one hand Monks are quite popular and they could release the KI source and then release the Oriental Adventures campaign setting. They could also release 2 psionic classes in PHB3 for Eberron fans.

On the other hand Psionics is a pretty big component and has had entire books devoted to it in the past. As such it could be the big class in PHB3 to satisfy Eberron fans as well as to complement Dark Sun later that year.

On the third hand, it could be Elemental to bring focus onto new classes (or at least very obscure classes) and would complement the Planescape campaign setting released later that year.

So what do people think? We're of course not going to know until this time next year, but its fun to speculate

Has it been confirmed that Dark Sun will the campaign setting of 2010?

...I hope so!

I'm thinking it will be psionics because it was mentioned somewhere(do not ask me to find this) that psionics were originally planned for PHBII, but got pulled from it for additional development. To me this says that the psionic classes are further along in development then classes for any of the other unfeatured power sources. My personal expectation is for PHBIII to be Psionic, Shadow, and Ki heroes.

Nope, although I personalyl still consider it the most likely candidate.

-Totally, I'm thinking 4 Psionic, 2 Ki (Monk and…?) and 2 Shadow (Illusionist and Necromancer).

-Yeah, for some reason so do I.

In a far future "Bond". I liked a lot binder from "Tome of Magic".

Truename? Only fo spellcasters with a style of "Harry Potter".

I bet "taint". Do you rembember the taint rules systm from "Heroes of Horror"?

Incarnum? I don´t like that name very much. I would like something like the force from Star Wars (jedis and sith). I liked the totemist from "magic of incarnum" but the background of other two class...

-Incarnum?

-I'm in the middle of designing a truenamer paragon path.

-I have a feeling the guts of Incarnum will be consumed by the Ki power source.

I would like that. The only other solid candidate would be elemental. There could be just 2 power sources in the PHB3 encompassing up to 8 classes

I think this is more likely. However, it's too early to say for certain.

What's almost a given is that Psionics will be the next "big" power source. Space constraints were the main reason we aren't getting them for March 2009.

For PH3 perhaps psionic, ki and elemental.

Or Psionic in its own book.

And I prefer elemental to shadow.

Psionics looks like the favorite, but I think shadow is a dark horse (ahem).

For many people, psionics is still a contentious inclusion, and WotC may decide to play it safe and only include two psi classes (psion and psychic warrior). The shadow source can be easily filled out to four well-known classes, such as illusionist, necromancer, hexblade, and maybe ninja/swordsage.

Then again, four psi classes is definitely on the cards. PHB3 is, in my opinion, a two-source race. (Cue groans )

A few minor notes here
- just because PH1 and PH2 have 8 classes doesn't mean PH3 will (remember all of WotC's 'no needless symmetry' talk)
- just because PH1 definitely has 4 classes from 1 power source and 2 from two others doesn't mean that PH2 will (there could easily be 3 primal and 3 divine instead of the expected 4 primal and 2 divine), and definitely doesn't mean that PH3 will

If it were up to me, and I were sticking with the 8 classes/PH model I'd probably go psi, shadow, and ki, something like this...

psi/controller - telepath
psi/striker - soulknife
shadow/defender - hexblade*
shadow/leader - necromancer
shadow/controller - illusionist
ki/striker - ninja
ki/striker - monk
ki/defender - samurai

* this is the one I'm least sold on

I am hoping for a mix, allowing other classes using any of those power sources to be introduced in other books.
The Ki powersource, though, could start with the "classic five" (samurai, monk, ninja, wu-jen, and shugenja), and all of those could appear in an OA sourcebook.
I would say that psionic is probably highest on my list, but I am interested in shadow as well (mainly because I think that's where a new hexblade would fit ).

Sure, but if it has less then I certainly hope that we get a discount. We've already lost 100 pages and 3 races from PHB2 with no such discount.

It's the same size as the DMG (and the same price). If they release a PH with fewer classes, it'll probably have more other stuff. They might decide to go crazy with ten or fifteen races in one PHB, or introduce some new player-oriented subsystem that takes a lot of space. Or they might just only have six or seven classes ready for production when PHBx has to be finalized.

I personally think that PHB's 3 and higher will simply have 2 power sources per book. There's no point in stretching out a power source over 2 PHBs. I get the impression that PHB2 will have all the primal classes they'll bother with, and that's it for primal, other than the Primal Power supplement, and additional campaign and accessory related material.

PHB3 they'll probably go for 4 psionic classes, plus whatever the other power source they want to cover is.

Yeah, I see PHB III as the Psionics and Ki Heroes hand book, it's been put off enough. It should have 8 classes and at least 4 races. Also it should have rules for OA style play, like an honor system.

"PH3: Primal, Psionic, and Ki Heroes"

I'm not convinced we (will) have seen all there is to see for Primal in PH2. For example, there's hints around suggesting that PH2 will have only two Controller classes: Sorcerer (Arcane) and an as-yet-unnamed Divine controller. Where's the Primal controller we've all been expecting?

Just an idea.

I'm currently speculating Witch.

I think there will be 4 Primal classes in the PHB II:

-Barbarian = Defender

-Druid = Striker

-Shaman = Leader

-Witch = Controller

Just today's speculations for me.

Perhaps ki power means the return of some class from "tome of battle" (crusader, swordsage or warblade).

About truename... It´s perfect for character with a style of Harry Poter, and now I rebember the..."dark speak" from "book of evil darkenss", and "words of creation" from "book of exalted deeds", a ungodly and a holy language respectively.

Truename would be a perfect power soucer for lovers of old school of Transmutation.

I looked at the cover of PHBII on the site. Has a guy with an axe made of crystal, and someone with two ghostly looking panthers next to them.
That kind of pushes me in the direction of elemental and shadow. To see it, check 2009 D&D products.

Then someone of Asian descent (or someone with a social conscience that understands the implications of WotC's decision) sees it, gets ****** off, calls the media and accuses WotC of racism, which would actually be true, resulting in massive amounts of negative coverage. Yeah, I'm sure they'll risk that.

I don't even know why they promised it in the PHB. I hope they don't keep that promise. For their own sake.

EDIT: Also, Shugenjas are not an original WotC class. They're originally from L5R and should use the Divine power source, if any, what with them being blessed by gods.

Why don't we overreact some more? Ki is happening as a power source, and I for one am glad. If you want to play a 'realistic' ninja/samurai, go ahead and use the martial power source. I for one will enjoy my anime/wire-fu/legend influenced Magical Soul Power Ki classes of awesome.

Ki is an asian concept. What would exactly be racist about this then? And why were thee no complaints about the first Oriental advnetures? If Japan made D&D instead of the west, and came up with a source book called 'Western Adventures' filled will classes like knights, clerics and wizards, would you equally complain about how racist they were being?

Besides, it is mainly a moot point anyway. I just don't see them making any power source exclusive to a campaign setting, and they already said that Ki wasn't going to be exclusively asian-themed. Although it is possible that we will get an 'oriental adventurers' type campaign setting with additional asian themed ki classes.

the l5r system had a campaign setting called rokugan the legend of the five rings, they eventually wrote into one of the books how to transfer characters from l5r over to 3e then they made a book which was setup 3e, including a fun monk called the inkyo monk really fun to play a little broken though. They based the oa books off of the l5r as they use the continent of rokugan for the oa campaign setting, I think it has been that way since the first oa book, can't remember which edition that was in but I have a 3e, but I know there are older ones

Agree 100%. Further, I see Ninja as a Shadow source candidate, and if Wu-Jen are created as a new class (rather than having everyone just re-flavor the Wizard) I'd go with Arcane on that one. And there's no reason Samurai has to be Ki, either-- it could be Martial (i.e. it doesn't need it's own class :P).

Monk is definitely Ki, but that's about it. I could also see non-Asian classes as Ki.

And when Ki is released, I wouldn't be surprised at a mention of "incarnum" in Ki's description. ;)

It is not in the FRPG, the only classes in the FRPG are the Swordmage and Spellscarred multi-class only class.

Additonally classes will only be released in Player's Handbooks and Player's Guides, so there will not be a book dedicated to psionic classes until after they have been released in a Player's Handbook or Player's Guide.

*blinks* Umm the two are thematically very different. Both are capable of suporting a wide range of classes and are specifically mentioned as distinct power sources in the PHBI. Why the heck would they merge those? It would basically be the same as merging divine and arcane. While there are certainly some similarities, they are still dramatically different.

Psionic in all probability, since it was originally supposed to be in PH2, however since Psionics has a love/hate relationship with so many DMs/Players, I am guessing they will either add more Martial and Primal to the book as well or go the other way and do something like Psionic and Shadow. Then you have two new power sources for source books.

I'm hoping that Psionics gets the full 4-class treatment in PHIII - and that's still too long to wait (though I know, I can play fair - other people want other things, and my preference is not inherently better).

Essentially, I'd like Psionics to get a 4-class treatment if Dark Sun is getting released.

I'd like Shadow to get a 4-class treatment if something like Ravenloft is getting released.

I'd like Elemental to get a 4-class treatment if something like Planescape is getting released.

And I'd like something like "Pure Crazy" to get a 4-class treatment if something like Spelljammer is getting released (note the "crazy" part).

Essentially, I hope it ties in heavily to the campaign setting - and I hope they integrate those classes (at least part of them) into the setting. My preference remains Psionics/Dark Sun, but so long as they do the above I'll be satisfied, at least.

I think they are going to keep the current power source model of 4, 2 & 2, for the PHBs. That being said, I think that PHB3 will have 4 psi and 2 ki, but because I think the Shadow power source has a lot of traction, I'm not sure if they would give us 2 shadow in PHB3 or wait and give us 4 of them in PHB4.

Nope. A shugenja's spellcasting in L5R comes from his ability to communicate with the kami (not the Kami) and get them to do his bidding. These kami are not gods. While shugenja are also priests and as such blessed, that's not the source of their power.

I'm not excluding the possibility that they will use the Divine power source (it's a close enough approximation, and I don't imediately see other candidates for a similar power source other than animistic/shamanic concepts, which may be too limited), but it shouldn't be a foregone conclusion.

Nope absolutely nothing suggesting it at all. Nothing like a power excert coming out of an unreleased book with the class name of spellscarred......ok enough sarcasm, yes it is in there. Which is what I think the PHB III will contain, but that does leave us with the Elemental power source.

Maybe the PHB III will be something like 4 Psionic classes, 2 Shadow and 2 Ki, and then the PHB IV will contain 4 Elemental classes, 2 Shadow and 2 Ki, as they seem to be roughly shooting for 4 classes per power source, not counting campaign specific classes (artificer/swordmage etc).
