| #1jedi123Oct 25, 2009 7:41:48 | I was wondering if i was the only one who would be interested in seeing the gem dragons return. I always liked them, and was disapointed to find out that MM3 would Catastrophic dragons and not Gem. |
| #2lizardmageOct 25, 2009 7:45:02 | I could go either way on gem dragons. I think the catastrophic dragons will be interesting enough though. Go with something a little on the new side, then go for the Gems in MM4. |
| #3The_SilverswordOct 25, 2009 7:53:53 | Put me down for yes on gem dragons. I loved them as well. They were psionic so with psionic being in PHB3 Im hopin the gem dragons make a return as well. Maybe theyll be in the Draconomicon 3. We can only hope. I want Half-dragons back too! And before anybody says it, no, Dragonborn do not count! But hey Gem Dragonborn! that would be cool too! |
| #4jedi123Oct 25, 2009 8:36:03 |
I'd be for catastrophic dragonborn too. I haven't gotten the Draconiminicon yet, read through it though, isn't the draconic template supposed to be half-dragon or am I mistaken. I was hoping psionic power source meant gem in MM3 but I'm keeping fingers crossed for MM4. |
| #5The_SilverswordOct 25, 2009 8:48:45 |
Excellent idea! I didnt even think of that! Yeah I think the draconic template could be Half-Dragon, but they dont have rules for pcs getting templates, or do they? I really want a Half-Dragon PC. Like maybe a draconic bloodline feat or something. |
| #6velstrideOct 25, 2009 9:05:54 | I also want gem dragons and actualy just finished mentioning that in another thread not even an hour ago. Personally I think it would be fitting for 3 given that phb3 is psionic...though sadly i fear it is highly unlikely |
| #7ZanderKreeganOct 25, 2009 9:17:56 | I want my Lawful Ferrous Dragons back |
| #8MarandahirOct 25, 2009 9:41:06 | Ferrous Dragons are assumably merged with Metallics.
Gem Dragons, were, for all intents and purposes, an attempt to fill out the grid: w
"We have Good Dragons, we have Evil Dragons, let's have Neutral Dragons. But what would Neutral Dragons be, Daddy? We have A Colour Group, A Metallic Group, but what next? "Of course, Sonny. It's Just Like Pokémon. We'll Make Gemstones the theme for the Third group!"
"That's a Great Idea, Daddy!"
Or something like that. Never mind the fact that Gem Dragons are probably older than even the Colour Generation of Pokémon... They may come yet. 4e has a LOT of growing to do. They see it as a 10 year edition, and they've only planned out 5 years of it thus far with Power Sources, and only 4 years of Dragons. We may see Gems yet. |
| #9mercaiusOct 25, 2009 13:04:55 | I also liked gem dragons, but I agree that there is an issue of where their place stands in the current setting. At best, they'd probably be even more revised than metallic dragons to find a better niche than "dragons who aren't good or evil, and oh, they use psionics. Maybe even a greater visual evolution so that they are less easy to mistake for "really shiny chromatic dragons." |
| #10pogminkyOct 25, 2009 13:29:33 | Gem Dragons - sounds good to me. A couple for MM3 would be cool. |
| #11lizardmageOct 25, 2009 14:43:23 | If they brought them back would you still want them looking like a carved gem statue, or something more....draconic/reptilian, but in shades of the gem? I always have trouble using them because of their gem statue look, but that's just me. To answer the how I have trouble with their looks is that it doesn't flow naturally with me. I look at them and think that a psion carved it then gave it life....hmmm maybe if I ran them that way....... |
| #12jedi123Oct 25, 2009 15:15:41 |
I think with the removal of the strict rules of alignment, that the gem dragons should really be shown as the psionic dragons. make it less than an after thought, unfortunately this clashes a bit with the purple dragon, but not necesarily. I'd be interested in seeing what is done with them now that they aren't defined by their neutrality. @Lizardmage; You could always have it that their scales are similar in property to the gem they are named for, kind of combine the reptilian look with the carved statue look. |
| #13lizardmageOct 25, 2009 15:43:15 | I'm looking at Draconomicon1 right now, mainly at the Elemental dragons, but most of these critters here seem to be previews of later dragons and their types. If they keep Gems more neutral then it is possible they might throw in a Young Emerald Dragon and Elder Sapphire Dragon to show people want to expect. Just a thought. |
| #14MarandahirOct 25, 2009 16:37:40 | Not really. There's a difference between Planar Dragons and Catastrophic and Scourge Dragons. Planar Dragons are getting support in every Draconomicon. Catastrophic will be next year's MM3 and Draconomicon 3 focus, and Scourge the year after. Elemental Dragons are other types of Dragons that have been changed by their migration to the Chaos.
EDIT: By the way, Purple Dragons already have a very Psychic focus. Considering that the crystal-focused Psions are being abandoned, I would need a better explenation for Gem Dragons for them to be in. |
| #15jedi123Oct 25, 2009 16:57:38 |
Well the crystal thing is not all gone (it's the reason psions get orbs as an implement), but I see your point. I was thinking maybe the ruby dragon has fire breath, but also pyro kinesis type powers (manipulating thier breath's form, and some such), it the thing the imeediatley comes to mind. |
| #16lizardmageOct 25, 2009 17:05:05 | You talking about a Daily Power that creates a living breath weapon or more like sustaining an area effect and moving it around? The latter would make for a unique controller, the former a a built in bodyguard/cannon fodder for a solo... |
| #17jedi123Oct 25, 2009 17:58:16 |
More the second, but the first is a possibility too, or just pyrokinetic powers in place of a breath weapon, something to really show their power is in their mind no their mouth. |
| #18lizardmageOct 25, 2009 18:35:00 | That would be different. I could get behind a dragon that snaps its fingers and one of the pcs bursts into a flame. Come to think of it I would do that then laugh at the reaction my pc would have. |
| #19kamikazegerbilOct 25, 2009 19:39:54 | A good way to update the dragon look without making look like they're just very shiney dragons is for them to have crystal formation "growing" off them where most dragons would have crests and fills. I may not be explaining it well but the image in my head is pretty cool... If only I could draw. |
| #20Duke5150Oct 25, 2009 20:07:31 | I'd enjoy gem dragons making a comeback. I could easily see them as psionic or primal. |
| #21jedi123Oct 25, 2009 20:24:50 |
I'm understanding you, and the image looks awesome. |
| #22sfdragonOct 25, 2009 21:50:25 | gem dragons were psychics in precious editions. wait for the phb3 to have rules for that first, then go with the dragons |
| #23undraveOct 26, 2009 0:35:34 |
"rules for that"?! You say it as if Psionic would need special rules to itself. Even if it did Monsters can get whatever power we can design, there's no need for a PHB for them to appear. No... it has nothing to do with the RULES. It has to do with the design space. |
| #24MarandahirOct 26, 2009 1:13:13 | In any case, Psychic is different from Psionic. Psionic is a flavour of class, that may or may not have powers that deal Psychic damage. Psychic is simply a damage type having to do with mind-altering affects and hurting you mentally and emotionally, which can sap your strength and willpower just as much as if you're on fire or freezing cold. |
| #25jedi123Oct 26, 2009 18:30:17 | en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragon_%28Dungeons... Relooking at the breath weapons of the Gem Dragons they had some interesting ones. Such as force, and what would now be radiant damage. Perhaps that could be there hook, non tradanditional breath types. With illusion, dominating, and other iconic psionic abilities. |
