| #1sfdragonDec 17, 2008 20:28:58 | and other half undead?? |
| #2That_Blasted_SomoflangeDec 17, 2008 21:08:19 | I don't get the idea of half-undead. Isn't the idea of undead that the are half way between life and death, not alive, but not truly dead. How can you have half undead? What are they like, Schrodinger's cat? |
| #3jordain_vizierDec 17, 2008 21:25:12 | I wanna play a Schrodinger's cat now. ![]() |
| #4urielsblindingfireDec 17, 2008 21:30:35 | The half vampire template from Libris Mortis was pretty cool and nowhere near as limiting as the full blooded Vampire template. One of my players is using that template on his Ninja and loves it. 4th e wise it should be only a matter of time before undead are playable again. Hopefully the time is near..... |
| #5ranadielDec 17, 2008 21:49:52 | You shouldn't count on it. New player classes and races are supposed to only appear in PHBs and PGs. Open Grave is neither. In theory, this could leave the door open still for PP or some other player option for half-undead (and toss me into the group that doesn't get half undead, I prefer binary values). However Open Grave from what we have seen so far, looks to be following the exact same blueprint as Draconomicon I. The book will open with the orgin of the monster type from the beginning of time, and it will end with by statting out a diety related to the monster group. So in summary, it is extremely unlikely that we will be seeing any player options in Open Grave......and the concept of half-undead doesn't make any sense.:P |
| #6Tharag_BoccDec 17, 2008 22:27:50 | So in summary, it is extremely unlikely that we will be seeing any player options in Open Grave...... Maybe, but we might get NPC style racial traits like those in the back of the Monster Manual. While that's not entirely the same as getting a new PC race, most players would consider it to be close enough. |
| #7ranadielDec 18, 2008 6:24:58 | Maybe, but we might get NPC style racial traits like those in the back of the Monster Manual. While that's not entirely the same as getting a new PC race, most players would consider it to be close enough. We had nearly half a year advance notice on the Manual of the Plane NPC race though. I think it is still a long shot that there will be an NPC race. Not as much of a long shot as there being player content, but I personally would not count on it. |
| #8GreenKnightDec 18, 2008 12:11:44 | Doubt there'll be a Half-Vampire PC race in Open Grave, but yeah, publishing such a race would be nice. Give it plenty of Racial Feats and top it off with a Dhampir multiclass-only class (which gives you access to traditional Vampire powers like turning into mist, a wolf, or a bat, summoning rat swarms, etc), and it'd be perfect. |
| #9wizardmonDec 18, 2008 13:10:40 | Bleh! Sure hope not! On a different note, though, I wouldn't mind if the book had rules for allowing players to play as REGULAR undead. Given what we saw in Manual of the Planes, I wouldn't be suprised if we DID see some of these options (ie, an undead race, and Paragon Paths for both using and combating undead.) |
| #10AldarcDec 18, 2008 14:24:06 | Bleh! Sure hope not! Likewise. |
| #11sallaDec 18, 2008 16:46:38 | Likewise. Thirded. |
| #12sfdragonDec 18, 2008 17:21:48 | each to their own. you want to play as a vampire, baelnorn, lich or archlich, that is your buisness. me i want a half vampire. but as it was stated, open grave is neither. but that still means nothing |
| #13askanipsionDec 18, 2008 18:52:40 | To me either you are a vampire or not - either you are alive, dead or undead ![]() I don't want a hundred half races in 4E - now playing as a vampire would be fine - just use the vampire rules but roleplay that you look more human - no need for another race to do it |
| #14EnclaveDec 18, 2008 19:02:26 | I don't get the idea of half-undead. Isn't the idea of undead that the are half way between life and death, not alive, but not truly dead. How can you have half undead? What are they like, Schrodinger's cat? Their one weakness? Opening the box. |
| #15sigil_beguilerDec 18, 2008 23:48:25 | Well the Janurary Editorial states in Dragon a article called, Damphyr. So could very well be a half-vamp PC race. |
| #16sfdragonDec 19, 2008 0:48:24 | Well the Janurary Editorial states in Dragon a article called, Damphyr. So could very well be a half-vamp PC race. blast it..... well if it is, someone pm when it comes out in january, and tell me one way or the other if it is.I'll only buy it if it is. |
| #17kairirosesDec 19, 2008 2:22:11 | To me either you are a vampire or not - either you are alive, dead or undead good ol' mythology says otherwise though... the most popular myth I can think of is the Romanian idea of the dhampyr. Born of a human parent and a vampire (with actual sex involved here, not pregnant mom getting bit like in Blade), the dampyr would be mostly human, but with some odd traits born of their vampire father or mother. The most common vampire trait of the classic dhampyr is the ability to sense the presence of vampires and immunity to vampiric powers. Usually preternatural speed is involved as well. The classic dhampyr is closer to Blade as he appeared in the pre-movie Marvel comics. He was a vampire hunter who was damn good with blades (through extensive training), could sense vampires, and was immune to getting turned. That was about it. Around the time of the movies coming out and Blade getting a lot more popular, Marvel really amped up Blade's powers making him pretty much an uber-vamp who didn't need to drink. I'm really hoping that the Dhampyr article in January's Dragon is a full "Playing..." article. With the 4e ideal of no PC races having level adjustments, I'm really looking forward to the Dhampyr actually being done fairly well, at the same power level as anyone else. I'm hoping that like Half-Elves they'll be allowed to take any feats allowed to their mortal parent (probably human as a baseline to make it simple), with Dhampir feats giving them access to higher-level vampire abilities. |
| #18darktouchDec 19, 2008 10:45:16 | I think "Half Undead" is best described as "Being alive, but tainted by undead energies." You get to be fairly normal but can go all emo. You have the undead weaknesses that translate into inconveniences. Sunlight doesn't kill you but you burn real easy for example. Plus you get some spiffy powers related to being undead. In D&D 4e however, I think this would best be handled by the Shadow Power source more than some race. |
| #19blowfishDec 19, 2008 17:10:45 | I wanna play a Schrodinger's cat now. How about a half-Schrodinger's cat? Oh..wait...*shudders* |
| #20MusicOfCreationDec 20, 2008 11:23:23 | Thirded. Fourthed |
| #21urielsblindingfireDec 20, 2008 11:54:05 | No, no half vampires. Boy we sure could use another Elven race though. Wait. There aren't any other "half undead" that i am aware of. |
| #22wizardmonDec 20, 2008 14:21:37 | Wraith-blooded. Mummy Heir. Deep Homonculus. (<--- a la Full Metal Alchemist.) Necropolitan. (<--- I didn't make this one up.) Lich Scion. Atropalborn. Need I name more "half-undead?" |
| #23tiwaztyrsfistDec 23, 2008 12:39:31 | Just my : :In 3rd Edition, most things like being a half vampire, or being a Lich, or whatever were handeled by applying a template to a character. In 4th Edition, monsters and characters work differently, and templates can't be applied to characters. So Half-Vampire would have to be a race. As such, it's against the current design philosophy of WotC to include new races in books other than PHBs and Campaign setting books. So, New races in Open Grave is a no go. EXCEPTION: There may be MM style treatments of monsters as races in an appendix in the back of the book. However, it seems unlikely that a section would be devoted to full race write-ups. It DOES seem likely, however, that there will be undead/undeath themed Paragon paths, and one or two epic destinies. I forsee a Lich Epic Destiny, as well as both Necromancer style PPs, and a Boneknight style PP. |
| #24Crimson_ConcertoDec 23, 2008 16:23:15 | Some people need to learn the difference between a race and a racial template. 4E doesn't have racial templates for players. :P |
| #25calronmoonflowerDec 23, 2008 17:48:47 | Oh come one now. :P A half-vampire race could be possible. Also you could get a multi-class option like spellscared. [thread] |
| #26the_simple_seeker_iiDec 24, 2008 2:35:44 | As much it is possible. I see no feasible means to have that in the game. Around priest/cleric and paladins, that individual will be considered a blight to life itself.Termination will soon follow.Oh come one now. :P A half-vampire race could be possible. |
| #27mevis_falconhandDec 24, 2008 2:50:44 | Just my : Didn't they just include a new race when releasing "Manual of the Planes" (the Bladeling)? ![]() |
| #28zeratulcraftDec 24, 2008 3:28:40 | I forsee a Lich Epic Destiny, as well as both Necromancer style PPs, and a Boneknight style PP. Lich PP, Demilich ED, IMO. Didn't they just include a new race when releasing "Manual of the Planes" (the Bladeling)? That wasn't quite a complete race write up, it was just the same as the races in the back of the MM1. |
| #29GhostStepperDec 24, 2008 13:12:21 | As much it is possible. I see no feasible means to have that in the game. Around priest/cleric and paladins, that individual will be considered a blight to life itself.Termination will soon follow. Is that priest/cleric/paladin a certain core race that looks like satan and has multiclassed in order to make pacts with the devil? Yeah, playing the "does party with paladins" card doesnt really fly in 4E. ;) |
| #30Johnny_AngelDec 25, 2008 23:55:37 | Wraith-blooded. Danny Phantom |
| #31chimeratechnologyDec 26, 2008 12:58:18 | in answer to the question: I WISH! they is not letting me play ma half-vampires! |
| #32GMforPowergamersDec 26, 2008 13:42:30 | Wraith-blooded. None of those are in 4e yet.. As much it is possible. I see no feasible means to have that in the game. Around priest/cleric and paladins, that individual will be considered a blight to life itself.Termination will soon follow. How would that same cleric/paladin feel about my tefling Infernal Lock who at 11th level will take twin pact for shadow... Yea that half vampire fighter tryying to hunt and kill his father and his whole blood line doesn't seam that bad now does it??? |
| #33the_simple_seeker_iiDec 28, 2008 2:37:26 | Sorry. did not mean to imply a dual class or multi-class person statement. Tefling will go the way of the mice, crushed.:D And hmmmm, nice story (of the moment), he will join his 'dad' thereafter. No other bloodline should exist. None of those are in 4e yet.. |
| #34the_simple_seeker_iiDec 28, 2008 2:38:59 | See correction in other post. And card flying is only the High mages. ;) Is that priest/cleric/paladin a certain core race that looks like satan and has multiclassed in order to make pacts with the devil? Yeah, playing the "does party with paladins" card doesnt really fly in 4E. ;) |
| #35GreenKnightDec 28, 2008 7:37:18 | And hmmmm, nice story (of the moment), he will join his 'dad' thereafter. No other bloodline should exist. Why would he join his dad, thereafter? These are 4E Clerics and Paladins. They're just as likely to worship Orcus and view the Half-Vampire as a holy being than anything else. Nevermind that most of the gods would have zero problem with a Half-Vampire, which would hold true for most of their Clerics and Paladins. I'm sure some would have their prejudices, but you can hardly claim that there'll be some kind of injunction saying that Half-Vampires must be killed. Especially since they're not undead, and so any rules for destroying undead won't apply to them in the slightest. |
| #36Xeviat-DMDec 28, 2008 9:22:04 | Nobody noticed that there will be a preview of the Dhampyr in January? |
| #37chimeratechnologyDec 28, 2008 12:54:17 | Nobody noticed that there will be a preview of the Dhampyr in January? wait... what? where is this? TELL ME! i freaking love undead! also i can't find the the January calender... |
| #38GMforPowergamersDec 28, 2008 13:33:55 | Sorry. did not mean to imply a dual class or multi-class person statement. what if said half vampire is a paliden of the same god as you??? do you still fight him? |
| #39doctorhookDec 28, 2008 14:18:34 | One of my players wants to buy Open Grave. Obviously I can't stop him, but do you think I should tell him that there's going to be basically no player material in it? Should I let him look at my copy? |
| #40ranadielDec 28, 2008 16:01:45 | Nobody noticed that there will be a preview of the Dhampyr in January? Nope nobody noticed because there is no preview. It is a stand alone article. One of my players wants to buy Open Grave. Obviously I can't stop him, but do you think I should tell him that there's going to be basically no player material in it? Should I let him look at my copy? Just point him to the ToC in the last preview and, if you have it, let him look through the Draconomicon since the two should be similair. It will detail a lot of stuff that he might find interesting, but do make sure he is aware of the lack of character options present in it. |

More broadly speaking, do you guys think I should be worried about a player (fairly inexperienced, ~6 months playing) wanting to read DM material? I've had problems with him metagaming in the past. |

More broadly speaking, do you guys think I should be worried about a player (fairly inexperienced, ~6 months playing) wanting to read DM material? I've had problems with him metagaming in the past. If he plays DnD like a video game and looks at DM material like a strategy guide, then yes. Me personally? I don't care what my players see so long as it's not my notes. I trust them to know nothing more than what their characters do. Digressions aside, I'm reeeaaally curious about Dhampyr. I anticipate STR CHA, leaving them as good paladins (for a hatred of undead), warlords (for that noble archetype), and rogues (for obvious reasons). But ranger would fulfill another character archetype, perhaps in a paragon path: Vampire hunter. I'm definitely seeing STR DEX CON or CHA in some combination. |
