WoC has to plot books a fair distance out, so if we want to talk about 2011 it may already be too late, but just for the heck of it, post your thoughts here.

My list, in no order...

1. Feywild and Shadowfall books (ok, the Feywild book would be #1 as you can easily use that in mid-heroic to epic levels)

2. Stop with the new settings and release a Nerath setting, with material that can be easily adopted to any of the existing settings

3. Instead of a Player's Handbook 4, lets get and Unearthed Arcana with variant rules for the existing 28+ classes

4. Instead of a Monster Manual 4, lets get a Fiend Folio with monsters as characters available. The recent Eberron novels have convinced me that even wee goblins can be interesting characters.

5. Go ahead and release DM guide 3 with support for epic play

6. The next AV release could bring more alternative treasure back into the game, like touchstones, locations as treasure, more boons and grandmaster training, etc.

What are your thoughts...

The Feywild and Shadowfell books would be a nice addition. And yes, the Nerath or implied setting really does need to have its lore consolidated into one campaign setting. Too much info scattered at various books and DDI.

I don't mind the 4th series of the PHB/MM. I am looking forward to new classes though maybe not so with new races unless it's the classic goblinoids or so.

DMG3 should address variant rules for faster combats since alot of thread are talking about it.

I would definitely like to see a feywild book.  I also want an oriental adventures book.  It isn't a actual campaign setting, but just an addition to other settings.  Also Unearthed Arcana and a Savage Species would be very cool for 4e.

+1 for the Nerath book; that would rock.
+1 for the Unearthed Arcana....(instant controversy just add water)

I'm ho-hum on the DMG3 and PHB4

Fiend Folio would be an interesting twist.......I wonder if they're locked into the Core Titles with numbers (MM 1,2,3,4?)

I would like to see a 4e take on "Oriental Adventures" with at least one class for each role to build a complete party using existing power sources.  Throw in some new weapons, new monsters and maybe a mini-campaign setting like a Forbidden City type stronghold.

I would like to see a book for monsterous races as PCs... Stats, feats, etc for Goblins, Hobgoblins, Bugbears, Orcs, Kobolds, Githyanki, Lizardfolk, etc.

Also, I'd like to see Bladelings (mostly because someone has tried to make them a race, but they haven't reciecved any support since then), and Kenku (because they seem like they could be an interesting race, since they don't default to evil like most other MM races. Plus, the Flock Effect is a pretty interesting feature). Whether these would get into the PHB4 or the aformentioned "Races" book or whatever doesn't matter that much, but I'd like to see these races fleshed out more.

I'd also like to see an Aberrant creature supplement, along the lines of Open Grave, the Draconomicons, or the upcoming Demonomicon (basically, something like "Lords of Madness" 4e).

I'd like to see something like that myself, but I'd want them to give stats for a mindflyer that can be used as a player character. I love mind flayers and want to play one in 4th.

I would not buy that. I would buy a new setting.

3. Instead of a Player's Handbook 4, lets get and Unearthed Arcana with variant rules for the existing 28+ classes

I don't see why they should stop the PHB product line...

4. Instead of a Monster Manual 4, lets get a Fiend Folio with monsters as characters available. The recent Eberron novels have convinced me that even wee goblins can be interesting characters.

No. Just no. New PC races, monsterous or not, should appear in new PHB books. I would love to see a PHB 4 with goblins in it. However I don't see the need for a fiend folio full of monsterous PCs.

5. Go ahead and release DM guide 3 with support for epic play

Agreed.

6. The next AV release could bring more alternative treasure back into the game, like touchstones, locations as treasure, more boons and grandmaster training, etc.

That sounds like a good idea.

What are your thoughts...

I would like to see another PHB, another MM, a new campaign setting, more planar location books (so that I can run my own homebrew planescape style setting), more power books, and a "Lords of Madness" monster book (think OPen Grave for aberant creatures) sounds like a great idea.

I would like to see a book like Unearthed Arcana come out. Possible things it could give us:

1) New versions of PHB1 classes, in order to fit them better in the new class design model. Specifically, the Warlock, Cleric, Paladin, and maybe the Wizard. These could even be made RPGA legal in addition to the original forms of the classes.

2) Rules for using psionic classes without power points. The power point mechanic is interesting, but it's definitely not for everyone, and I don't think an aversion to power points should keep people away from psionic classes. Once again, this could even be reasonably made RPGA legal.

3) Alternate rules designed to speed up combat.

4) A comprehensive set of alternate rules to remove magic items from the game balance while still keeping them in the game as rarities.

5) Alternate rules designed to discourage the 5-minute workday.

6) Totally re-concepted rules for things that many people dislike, possibly including: rituals, skill challenges, skill system in general, and whatever else they think of.

I'm fairly strongly against a Nerath setting. I play in a 4th ed core world called Irusan and our map is completely different to any other map out there for the 4th ed core world. That's what is special about the core world. In Irusan the Mighty Acererak is the patron and saviour of the Argent. All he requires in return is that every 10 or 20 years the greatest Heroes of Argent are given into his care where he then requires them to enter the Tomb of Horrors to defeat its many traps.

In Irusan King Iktus Torn Bellum IV was the final king of Nerath and was famous (infamous?) for having a harem. In the Chaos Scar there is a village of moradin worshiping kobolds who have a treaty with Hammerfast.

I'm sure there are many other 4th ed core worlds out there that share these traits but are completely different in character. If an official book was broguht out for the core setting it would discourage people from creating these wonderful worlds of their own. It wouldn't stop people, but it would discourage them.

What I'd like to see are the following.

MM4 - we can always use more monsters

PHB4 - I think bringing in the oriental style classes would be great here (samurai, wu jen, ninja, etc.) along with a few others.  Alternately, I'd like to see the PHB4 focus on swashbuckling/rennaisance style characters.  A noble, swashbuckler, musketeer, pirate and the like would be fun too.

DMG3 - I'd like to see this with the focus towards epic level play

A new campaign setting - ideally a completely new and original one with a focus on either the oriental campaign or the swashbuckling campaign to line up with what they do with PHB4 in the same way this year's Dark Sun takes advantage of PHB3's psionic classes.

Akin to the OP, I would certainly like to see Feywild and Shadowfell books.

I would also like a PHB4 or similar release that included new races/classes and included some monstrous races.

I would also like to see a 4e updated Oriental Adventures with eastern inspired races, classes and monsters.

I would definetely like to see another campaign setting, whatever it may be.

I would also like to see some 4e compatible products that diverge from straight fantasy, such as an updated d20modern, future or past.  The upcoming Gamma World release is a good start, but I am still hoping for products that are completely compatible with fantasy 4e.

Above everything else...

There needs to be an alternative to the horrible "Parcel System" rules, including the pricing of magical items, cost to make, the residum from disenchanted items being the same as cost to make, and an alternative that allows monsters to have individual treasure packages instead of pulling from one overall "pool" of limited treasure.

This, more than anything else, takes away the fun for players when they hit a ceiling of wealth and can't get the "expensive" magical items because the Parcel System works against them.

Wish lists need to be stricken out of the DMG and never be mentioned again.

May 02, 2010 13:34:53
Our group does not much like wish lists either. Instead we all sort of "picked" three items in the early heroic tier which will level up (or transform) with us. I fully expect the Paladin's radiant sword will eventually become a holy avenger (of some sort) etc. We also nakedly stole the old 3.5 weapons of legacy encounters and maps to 'awaken' or 'enhance' our basic three items (instead of mucking around with residium, etc) and we will likely give each set some sort of custom "item set bonus"

I mention these things as a way to show how D&D rules can accommodate  different play ideas, and I would really like the 2011 books to give us some support for that (as well as a few more raw ideas).

As an aside, WoC seems to have created a new genre, the "fantasy travel guide" such as the Underdark, Plane Above, Plane Below books, and I am really enjoying them as much to read as to play with. I would really like to see more such things (except for the far realm...no one reads about the far realm and keeps their sanity)....hrm, if WoC wanted to write a Far Realms source book, maybe that would look something like the 3.5 horror guide they once published (can't remember the title).

Books I would like to see . . .

More Player's Handbooks, Dungeon Master Guides, Monster Manuals and " Blank " Power.

As long as WotC continues to make them worth while.

A combat book for player's and DM's.

There seems to be lots of problems with combat being very slow.

A Nerath setting. A Birthright setting.

3 quarters of my group started with wishlists as a guideline for me as the DM. Since then they've asked me to discontinue the wish list and simply be surprised by what appears. As it was, the wishlist was never going to be the definitive items found.

My Wants for 2011

D&D
PHB4: Oriental Adventures - Oriental themed races, classes ... the works.
MM4: Fiend Folo - More nasties ... maybe a few converted from 3.5.
DMG4: Sword & Sorcery - Focus on a less Tolkien/High Fantasy and advice on running Low Fantasy.
D&D Encounters - Box sets of minis, adventure tiles and a few adventures that go with them.
Greyhawk Campaign Setting w/ either "Return to the Barrier Peaks" or a "Castle Ravenloft" module.
Dungeon Tiles - Have them tie into the Campaign Setting (like the Dark Sun ones this year)

Non-D&D
Star Frontiers - Okay, we lost Star Wars and gained Gamma World.  How about Star Frontiers?
Top Secret/Dark*Matter - Another possibility to stretch the rules in a more modern way.

Mind you, ideally, I'd love for WotC to gain back the Star Wars license, but I doubt that'll happen.

PHB4: Elemental or shadow classes, preferably a mix of both. Goblins, kobolds, and aarakocra as possible races.
DMG3: On epic play, maybe some more themes, terrain, terrain powers, templates, etc
MM4: More fuel for the Monster Builder
Unearthed Arcana: Let's bend the rules!
Feywild and/or Shadowfell: Give the heroic tier feel of these, they should have pre-dated the other planar books

Really, anything BUT more DDE books.

I would prefer not to see Unearthed Arcana.

First of all, dungeon masters who like house rules can make house rules without a published book.

Second of all, I like the existence of a universal norm of play where everything is core, which is why I also like the existence of Living Forgotten realms, because it helps to anchor the broader game.

Why? For one reason, when I read a new Dragon article or skim a new book, I like to be able to imagine using the ideas in play, not wondering if it will be allowed in even a typical game.

Unearthed Arcana should be non-RPGA, so it wouldn't affect the universal norm (although as I wrote before, alternate character options could be made RPGA legal if desired. This wouldn't affect the universality of the RPGA, because these rules wouldn't be alternate rules, but rather additional rules). As you say, DMs who like houserules can make them, but that doesn't mean those houserules will be good or even playable. Unearthed Arcana should be a collection of alternate rules that are playable, balanced, and don't go against the core philosophies of 4e D&D. It could also include a chapter on rule design where it compares good rules to bad rules, so that houserulers will see the difference between a good houserule and a bad one.

Although I *really* like the idea of an unearthed arcana book, 2011 may not be the best year for it. The end of 2010 is focused on D&D essentials line (mostly to get new people into the game) and 2011 would be the year to support that goal. A book of houserules would just confuse all the new players we want to introduce to the game.

I still like the idea of Feywild (which would support heroic to epic tier), DMG 3 (focusing on epic teir) and a sort of generic points of light/Nerath campaign setting (with information in it that can be applied to existing settings or house settings). As much as I may want an Unearthed Arcana book, we may have to wait to see it. For that matter, I don't know if we really need a Player's Guide 4 either. How many classes are we up to already, 30? Instead of new classes I would like to see new builds for existing classes...arg, that again takes us back to Unearthed Arcana.

I guess I want the game to get deeper, not wider, for the next 18 months at least.

I wish for more books that cost $20.

Fleshing out PoL in one book is something I'd much rather see at the end of the edition and I really don't want to see it end this soon. Also, I wonder if it will get fleshed out in the Essentials line any.

Something I'd like to see but I'm not expecting would be... what to call it... a "campaign omnibus". It would be a book filled with campaign descriptions, 10-20 pages each in length. Each would include a few setting specific PPs and/or monsters (or maybe templates instead), and an adventure outline. If anyone is familiar with d20 Past or d20 Apocalypse, those are the sort of campaign descriptions I'd want to see.

I'd be happy with it as a book just of campaigns, maybe even updating older settings they weren't planning on giving a full treatment. Or they could include them at the end of a book focusing on a certain theme. They could give us ship-to-ship combat and other seafaring rules and then toss in examples of different campaigns you could run using them.

Requests for 2011 in order ( 1 = most desirable)

1.  AV3 with support for psionics and item sets for classes ignored by AV2 (ex. paladin)

2.  Feywild book

3.  Shadowfell book

4.  DMG3 with emphasis on epic tier campaign.

If I had to choose only one thing, it would be the Feywild book.  I've been psyched up about the fey ever since I heard that 4E was going to give them their own creature type and plane.  I'd like to run a whole fey based campaign someday.

Shadowfell could be cool too, just not nearly as high on my list.

DMG 3 can focus on epic, that's cool with me, even though I've never played epic in any game.

There is one thing I am very surprised to see no one mention- Weapons of Legacy.  In 3E, that book was awesome.  The legacy items were great fun to use and design.  Was that one not so popular?  I know I and my local group liked it.
#28

laredric

May 11, 2010 8:35:58
I liked how Weapons of Legacy introduced a good way to integrate magic items into the game without the whole mess of crafting and residium, along with good story and simple, straightforward encounters. (touchstones were nice for that reason also) What I didn't like was the whole mess of how pluses and minuses at each level. For those of you who never used Legendary Weapons, the weapons would level up with you, and were much more powerful that normal magic items, but to balance this each Legendary Weapon would also give you a penalty to saves, or spells you could cast per day, etc. I don't miss that sort of dynamic.

Legendary weapons could get a trial run in an Unearthed Arcana book. I just don't want WotC to introduce Legendary Weapons and then nerf them right away.

While certainly playable as PC's, they're not PC stats. They're either too weak or too strong, and defintely lack racial feats, paragons, and other support that true PC races have. I'm all for new races, and some PC update on MM races too.

No idea if they would make it... but I really want another BoVD or something to open up more mature character development, story-telling, etc. Almost everyone of my characters, good, bad, or neutral in 3e had some character options drawn or adapted from the Book of Vile Darkness, whether it was some compulsive addiction, a taint, troubled history, curse, disease, etc. It just made things more interesting at the table and opened up role-play in interesting and sometimes humanizing ways. I had suggested on another forum that they come up with a Dark Fantasy setting for DnD that called for more anti-heroic characters, reversed cosmologies, and things drawn from the BoVD. It'd be neat to implement a bunch of anti-heroic 'themes' as found in Dark Sun 4e that allowed from things like arcane corruption, drug addiction, etc. Oh well, probably draming.

I agree that we might not see Gnolls in a future Players' Handbook, since they are developed and published as a Core race in the Dragon Magazine.

But since Eberron has entire nations of goblins and orcs (and many players like them in any setting) and kobolds are such a ubiquitous (and interesting) race at low levels, and since none of these have a proper write-up yet, they could well appear in Core publications such as either the Dragon Magazine or a Players' Handbook.

Of course the Monster Manuals are Core as well, but players do want some racial feats and paragon paths.

Goblins would have been a race in the Eberron Setting if they was going to be a Character race. Kobolds might be a race for a setting in the future, but certainly not a PHB Race, and I think the Gnolls being in Dragon is a moot point, since material there can be reused and rewritten for the actual books when they are released. I still don't see Gnolls as a character race, though.

I kinda hope that PHB4 will have a large race in it, such as Ogre or Centaur.  I also really want to see Goblins as a PC race, not just a MM race.

If I were to put the Goblin races into a book, I would put them in Dragonlance.  The 3.5e Races DL book had a big section on Goblin Races (bigger than the elves and dwarves actually).  There is an entire nation of heroic Goblins long established in the setting, Sikkit'Hul.  Also, a new somewhat heroic (read: Not Evil) nation of Goblins is springing up in the former homeland of one of the elven nations.  Dragonlance is also home to the most famous Hobgoblin in D&D history, Toede (who will always be part of the setting since he is immortal).  Whether or not that means Hobs should get a PC race in a DL book is kinda up in the air for me.  Perhaps Gobs in DLPG/CS and Hobs in PHB4.  Bugbears are best left as a MM race.

In short, my wishlist is as follows for 2011:

1. Dragonlance Campaign Setting (with Gobs in it, among other things)
2. Arctic Dungeon Tiles (we are getting desert, we have forest, I want more terrain types)
3. More PoLand adventure sites (I would like to see an Arkhosia site)
4. Arcane Power 2 (give it Specialty Schools in the way they did Combat Styles in MP2, more support for the Artificer)
5. Feywild and Shadowfell books on the order of how they have done Plane Below and Plane Above.  Perhaps put them in the same book and call them the Planes Between or the Planes Within or something.
6. A best of or classics miniatures sets (have it contain many old miniatures that aren't represented in currently available sets)
7. Gargantuan Green Dragon (because it is the only main Chromatic not represented by a G model), rerelease Icingdeath as a standalone, and make a Gargantuan Red Dragon.

As wizards has said they will not do a large player race as it messes with game mechanics I can't see this ever happening. They have reduced the size of the goliath Minitour and there will be no half giants in dark sun, just refluffed goliaths. If these races have been scaled back to be PC races, I think any large races will be done as medium creatures or not done as PC races.
