I too have been wanting an official Witch class for 4th Ed.  Before PHB 2 or HoS came out I was speculating that the Witch might be a Primal Controller, or some time of Shadow Controller (later I thought Illusionist), then I was thinking after Essentials it might be a part of the Warlock class (binder, hexblade, witch).

Maybe a Sorcerer subclass.

I'm assuming Arcane or Primal (or both), given that it's an HoF offering; and my bet's still on the Druid.

Although, it would make sense as a Warlock. I'm against giving it to the Wizard, and I still don't think WotC knows what they want to do with the Sorcerer yet. -- Didn't they state that there was a new Druid coming up? (I think I remember something about that, but I was too preoccupied with the Bard tidbits to care).

I can see it now... the only options will be "of the East" and "of the West."

They will have Water vulnerability instead of Radiant.

There will be racial restrictions.

And a new kind of elf. I don't know how.

I'm doubting that the witch will be anything but a new kind of wizard. i don't see any reason why the wizard should not have access to witch spells by association and vice versa. if it gets hand me down powers like the bladesinger did it'll be sorta sad. here's hopping that it has a few no-level power features all its own and then a bunch of witchy, transmutingy, cursey powers as it levels that it and the wizard can share. I suppose i could see warlock but not druid. i think in that rule of three that mentioned the druid the questioner specifically asked if there would be more druid seasons. however the answer only stated that a druid article had been planned for the future not necessarily that it would be about the sentinel. so...... more sentinel seasons in dragon = good news for players at encounters because we can use them every season.

You could very well be right, but once again (like previous editions), the Wizard seems to be hogging the limelight/stepping on toes a bit; they are Bladesingers, Enchanters, Illusionists (I was hoping for a Shadow Controller), Necromancers (I was hoping for a Shadow Leader), Nethermancers, Summoners etc.

The polymorphy, shapeshifty stuff is so far the purview of Primal classes. The "Savage Transformation" mention definitely sounds like a new Barbarian capability, as an example (which we know will be in this book). -- Witches could very well be a Druid sub.

Eh, like I said; I'll love it know matter what it is, as long as it's flavorful, fun and mindfully designed.

if there had to be one class to become bloated with options in every edition i think it would have to be the iconic wizard. when i began playing dnd 2e in highschool witch was just a bit before 3e came. everyone in the party i was in was a wizard. i despised the idea of being a fighter at the time and really wanted some spells but i went with an elf rogue just to be different. my firends didnt want me to play anything complicated anyway since i was new to the game.
if youre counting all builds of wizard then yes there are alot but really right now there are only 3 wizard classes. arcanist, mage and bladesinger. the witch could be a fourth and that sha-ir genie guy in the elemental heroes book would make 5. still i dont mind when it means the various classes can share some of those options. even one way sharing like the bladesinger. though i still hope the witch doesnt get that treatment. itd sorta be terrible if every encounter and daily choice said: you get a new power may we suggest flip ahead to wizard (mage) tansmutor and make a selection that suits your fancy. i sorta hope the power selection is like how the binder was set up. these powers have no lvl they are binder features and the rest they shared, somewhat unevenly but still sharing.

i wont mind either way too to be honest. i just think there's a part of the player community who might like playing a wizard transmuter. who turns enemies into toads. were the witch a wizard subclass and if the transmuter isnt also in this book then a transmuter dragon article is a sinch. since there will already be a bunch of transmutation spells floating about when before there were few.

While I'd prefer the witch to be something (almost anything) other than a wizard, I seem to recall the archetypal D&D witches, the hathran of Rashemen, were usually members of the wizard class. An arcane/primal subclass of the wizard would make sense, perhaps.

Ooh, yeah, the Sha'ir (Al-Qadim, the most elegant campaign setting of all time, in my opinion); I think they should definitely be some type of Warlock (Genie Pact).

And bring back the Clockwork Mage/Mechanician (an Artificer subclass)!

I've reflavoured the Dark Sun sorcerer-king pact as the 'genie pact' outside of DS, since 'sorcerer-king' sounds like an appropriate title for a really powerful djinn or efreet to me, and the pact has a lot of sand/desert themed spells.

The sha'ir's defining mechanical conceit (getting his familiar to bring him new spells) is similar enough to the existing wizard's spellbook feature that it seems pointless to try and shoehorn it into any class other than wizard.

Even witches get bored of the routine sometimes. Of course not all witches are villains, heck not all hags are evil and they are the witch turned up to 11.

Or go with heroic evil witches. Of course the witch had to steal the princesses's youth and beauty, so she'd have the appearance and vitality to go off and free her people from the evil Mindflayer. That princess was only going to waste her youth on galivanting around with shallow princes!

Yeah, the Witch is close to the Warlock fluff-wise. The primary difference is a witch isn't necessarily beholden to the agency that bestows their powers, nor do they necessarily understand the nature of their powers or where they came from. Warlocks know exactly where their power comes from, and know that if they mess up they have a specific being that will displeased with them. It's not a huge difference, but it's good enough for me.

Not a difference, at all.  The Witch may or may not know exactly who her patron is and may or may not have some sort of debt.  The Warlock, likewise, may have blundered into a pact without understanding exactly who is on the other side of it; and may or may not have a meaningful obligation as part of the pact (it's strictly character background/RP whether he does or not, there are no mechanics for it).

A warlock doesn't always know who their patron is and they aren't necessarily beholden to a patron either. In some cases they may not even have sought the power they were granted - something just decided to give it to them.

Exactly.

The witch is conceptually just like the warlock, but, it's arbitrarily been made a Wizard.  Since it gets wizard powers, it's necessarily a Controller (since wizards have so much of their role support built into their powers, a wizard sub-class that /isn't/ a controller would effectively be a Controller /also/, and gift it's role to the Wizard.  Personally, I think that's going to happen eventually, one way or another...

Regarding the arbitrariness, I'm sure this bit will be addressed in the book itself...we'll see how satisfactorily.  At this point, while I didn't balk when reading the description, it kinda does sound just like the warlock..."but different."

I like how they referenced Selune Sehanine for the core setting, and the ties to super-ancient, primordial times is interesting.  (Before the Dawn War, it seems.  That's what it's called in PoL, right?)  I'd certainly like to find out more details & fluff, so I guess the preview has done its job!

That part I wasn't so keen on, I do not like the mention of specific deities etc in a class description (tied to etc); saying gods, devils or demons is fine, but I don't want any specific names, like this class digs Orcus or what have you (too specific to me, for a class).

That to me is for Paragon Paths.

But still, I have been wanting an official Witch class since they announced the PHB 2, so am looking forward to checking it out.

Why on Earth, Oerth, or Yarth would anyone want Augury to be a ritual? You'd have to pay for it then. Sure most divination practices are more enjoyable if you have some nice incense burning, but it's not necessary. Yeah it'd be cool if the Witch did something really out there, something no other class could do, but then it would have been really pointless for it to be a subclass in the first place.

It just seems like a lazy class that they could have come up with in 10 minutes....4E has gotten lazy....I liked when 3.5 later came out with the alternate rules, etc.

Even the Blackguard (also a subclass) had unique abilities where you could tell them from another paladin.

Just thinking about the free arcane familiar...  is this better than the normal wizard arcane implement powers? The arcane familiar can give a lot of constant bonuses and can be quite powerful with the right feat support and power selection. Compare this to Wand of Accuracy which is basically a one off encounter power. I don't know as I don't play wizards and don't see a lot of them in my games (amazing I know, but my players are not fond of wizards)

I'm just confused why this thing exists at all.  It's a wizard that trades it's class features for ... er ... a warlock's fluff?  Really?

Meh.  Seriously, Meh.  I understand that the attraction of subclasses is that the designers don't have to put work into them, but in this case even the minimal amount of work they did seems like a waste of time.  They didn't do anything new thematically, and they didn't do anything new mechanically, so why bother at all?  It's like the subclass only exists for people to write 'witch' in their class entry and for no other reason.

I mean, I didn't think I could be dissapointed by the witch, I'm already used to sub-par wizard subclasses stealing thematic material from other classes.  I guess I was wrong.  I mean, the bladesinger, pointless as it was, bad as it was, theft of swordmage fluff for no other reason then to stick another class under the wizards hat as it was, at least had some new ideas, and did some new things, mechanically.  I mean, they weren't good ideas, they didn't do worthwhile new things, but at least there was something.

This is just... it's just a new level of "meh".  I mean, was there a point to this?  Or is it really nothing more then page filler?

Why isn't this witch just a handful of new warlock powers?

It's stupid. Someone at R&D needs to say "no more wizard powers!" and start supporting some of the other classes like, I don't know, the seeker--a nature oriented controller. And yeah, it feels extremely lazy.

True, Implement Mastery is pretty much just a one shot per encounter power (except staff of defense which gives a +1 to AC). Whereas many familiars offer both a constant ability and a usually helpful encounter power. Not to mention the larger selection of familiars compared to implement mastery options, as well as extensive support for other uses for familiars.
