I can't seem to get Character Builder to run at all. Ever. I get the following error message:

C:\Program Files ... CharacterBuilderUpdater.exe

This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.

It doesn't, by the way. Duh.

What should I do? I asked this question elsewhere a couple of months ago, but the answer I got then didn't work (something about reinstalling... something? The .NET framework? I tried that, but failed to actually get the program to function).

EDIT: By the way, I run Windows XP.

Are you starting from the desktop or start menu shortcut or directly clicking the programs?

If the latter you need to make a shortcut and give it the following as the target:

"C:\Program Files\Wizards of the Coast\Character Builder\CharacterBuilderUpdater.exe" RealCharacterBuilderUpdater.exe app.config

Without the last 2 bits it will always fail.

You can launch the Character Builder itself directly, but that will stop it checking for updates, which you may need to do.

Tried it both ways, still doesn't work.

I would recommend checking in your add/remove program control panel that you have .Net 3.5 SP1 installed.

If you already have it, you may want to try uninstalling all .Net version first, then download the version for Microsoft site here and install it, then try to re-install the character builder.

If you still can't get the install to work, check this thread and post your environment info there.
