| #1Nemo_the_LostOct 14, 2008 10:00:37 | DDI-for-cash goes live in about an hour, I guess. Has anyone purchased a subscription yet? I'm interested in getting more-or-less immediate feedback about Wizards' launch and implementation today and for the next few days. It will greatly inform my decision to subscribe or not. |
| #2mechascorpioOct 14, 2008 10:54:18 | I have, bought the year, transaction through Digital River went smoothly. No login issues. Nothing else really to note. AFAIK, what I see listed on the home page now is the same as I saw an hour ago. Not that I expected any immediate difference, I would think it will be a few days until there's a noticeable difference between generally available and exclusive content. OTOH, now that I try to go back to the homepage, I guess I brought the whole server D&D webserver down ![]() EDIT: Yeah, even though my subscription was confirmed, the whole site is wonky right now. Looks like they'll need some time to work out the bugs. As far as I could tell, when it was up, there seemed to be no "connection" between my member login, and the fact I had paid and subscribed. I still get prompted to subscribe if I try to go to Bonus Tools. |

We are still in the process of roll out so not all the components are working as intended just yet. Thank you for your patience, I will keep you updated through out the day! |
| #4pamelaOct 14, 2008 12:41:59 | Purchased our subscription. Including the tax, it came to £39.41 over here for the year. A couple of false starts before we got it paid but it ended up taking less than three minutes. |
| #5mechascorpioOct 14, 2008 13:34:45 | Thank you so much for your business! Thanks, Solice. As I posted in another thread, everything is working fine now, and seemed to be related to having wizards.com in my IE7 "Trusted Sites" settings. Once I removed it, I had no problem accessing. Not how I would expect IE to react, but it seems to have done the trick! |
| #6soliceOct 14, 2008 13:37:44 | Thanks Mech! I passed the info along to our teams just in case. |
| #7idorianOct 14, 2008 14:27:23 | i just subcribe now, it work fine. I like the builder monster a lot. But i want moreeee!!!!! grrr It all right Sorry my english and a salute ![]() ah i forget, i have what reset firefox for it work well. |
| #8OreOct 14, 2008 14:29:37 | My impressions... There were a couple hiccups but Solice and others responded quickly. Everything seems to be running smoothly now as far as I can tell. |
| #9WickOct 14, 2008 14:34:58 | It seems to me that the only thing added from what have already seen (Dragon/Dungeon and Bonus Tools) is the Monster Builder. Is this correct or are there other tools that just have not been discussed yet? |
| #10asmodeusloreOct 14, 2008 15:43:19 | Thats pretty accurate, Wick. However, this time tomorrow, there will be a slew of new articles that will be available only to subscribers, and the Closed Beta for the character builder is just around the corner. I suspect they intentionally kept the new additions light today, in order to work out any kinks in the system. |
| #11Negflar2099Oct 14, 2008 15:46:30 | So far so good for me too. There was a bug when I logged in this morning but it seems to have been fixed. Love the monster builder. I can see myself using this one a lot. |
| #12WickOct 14, 2008 15:48:51 | Anyone tried logging in on a different pc. I have multiple pc's and want to know if there are any issues there. I don't foresee any but you never know... |
| #13atlictoatlOct 14, 2008 15:55:15 | Are there any plans to publish the completed Dragon and Dungeon magazines as print magazines shipped to subscribers? Without such an option (for which I am willing to pay), I cannot see myself paying to be a subscriber of DDI. I simply am unable to read these magazines online, and require paper copies to enjoy my subscription. I am similarly unable to print the copies myself. While this isn't my situation, I suspect there are those who would like to subscribe to the magazines but do not have ready, regular access to a computer or to file storage. What are those of us who do not wish a subscription to online magazines to do? |

| #15WolfStar76Oct 14, 2008 15:59:55 | Apparently there will be an annual "best of" book for your shelf. This is rumor based on a title that's appeared on some bookseller websites. There's been no official word addressing this that I'm aware of. |
| #16fodiggOct 14, 2008 16:14:25 | This is rumor based on a title that's appeared on some bookseller websites. Well, my source was amazon so there goes that. Still...it makes sense for them to do that. |
| #17WolfStar76Oct 14, 2008 16:23:05 | Well, my source was amazon so there goes that. *nods* Chapters.ca listed it before Amazon.com I think. I'm not saying it won't happen, I'm just saying we don't have any official word. ![]() |
| #18KentinalOct 14, 2008 17:20:04 | *nods* Chapters.ca listed it before Amazon.com I think. I will repeat what I said last time. I searched WotC for announced products planned for release (then). This item was not listed. I saw a lot of card sets and other things planned for release in 2009. |
| #19cart_sprinterOct 14, 2008 19:33:05 | Anyone tried logging in on a different pc. I have multiple pc's and want to know if there are any issues there. I don't foresee any but you never know... I've now tried on two computers. No issues so far. I have access to everything I had access to while at work. |
| #20incenjucarOct 14, 2008 19:57:37 | Worked fine for me when I bought my one year, though I had to log out and log back in to get it to the member stuff. Also: That Promo Code thing made me bite my lip, wondering if I was missing out on something special. :P |
| #21ah_graht_dupOct 14, 2008 20:02:38 | It took me two tries to subscribe. I haven't had any problems with bugs since. The only thing that's annoying me is if I navigate away from any of the DDI pages for more than a couple of minutes I have to log in again when I come back. Is there some way to hand me a cookie that lasts a couple weeks, or at least a day? |
| #22David72Oct 14, 2008 20:24:08 | I am D&DI member, I bought the year subscription. So now what? I still see the compendium online still, but I dont see the exclusive content. is there a different link? |
| #23KentinalOct 14, 2008 21:23:57 | I am D&DI member, I bought the year subscription. So now what? I still see the compendium online still, but I dont see the exclusive content. is there a different link? Well I am not logged in and I am told I need to loggin in order to see full content. In part you are getting what you were seeing for free before, something I can not see because not logged in. Nothing new was promised, what part of DDI that worked for over a few months went for fee. Oh there is the Monster builder bonus tool there that only you can access now. |
| #24marius4Oct 14, 2008 22:46:01 | I don't get it. How are you guys subscribing and making payments?? Where is all this at?? |
| #25meadOct 14, 2008 22:56:06 | Just follow the clown car. |
| #26marius4Oct 14, 2008 23:07:36 | Ha. There is no clown car! :P Is something magical supposed to happen?? I'm logged in to both DDI and the forums, but nothing is different. I wasn't prompted to do anything and I don't see anything about joining. Edit: Hey, maybe I won a door prize or something! Free year's subscription! |
| #27meadOct 14, 2008 23:10:48 | Ha. There is no clown car! :P Is something magical supposed to happen?? I'm logged in to both DDI and the forums, but nothing is different. I wasn't prompted to do anything and I don't see anything about joining. There should actually be plenty of banners on the DDI page that say Subscribe Here. I went and looked earlier, they had everything locked down with links to the subscription page everywhere. http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/insider/subscription Keep in mind that they make you submit a cancellation query to a human intermediary. There is no auto-cancel as of yet, and people have said that selecting auto-renew is mandatory. Just a heads-up. |
| #28marius4Oct 14, 2008 23:14:58 | There should actually be plenty of banners on the DDI page that say Subscribe Here. I went and looked earlier, they had everything locked down with links to the subscription page everywhere. I shall check again, kind poster! Haven't looked there since giving up earlier. ![]() ::click, click, type, type:: Aha. I was on the applications pages, but the DDI homepage and stuff has the subscribey stuff. THANKS! ;) |
| #29ericr42Oct 14, 2008 23:51:49 | I purchased my year subscription earlier today (yesteday?). It took a few minutes before I could access the monster builder, but after that, it worked fine. No problems logging in with different computers. - Eric |
| #30ramses_iiiOct 15, 2008 0:16:20 | I am unable to create an account for the WotC website. I'm not sure if it's a browser issue or what, but every time I try to create an account so that I can subscribe, I get a technical error, and I'm not going to subscribe on the same account that my forum ID is attached to. I mean to buy a subscription to D&DI, but until I am able to create a new WotC account it isn't going to happen. |
| #31General_FelireOct 15, 2008 0:34:13 | For the record, if I was to buy Insider right now I would pay around 60 dollars for: *Two magazines *The bonus tools *And anything else that comes out during that year. And no matter what happens with the pricing plan, I will not have to pay again until October of next year. Right? And when I do have to pay again next year it might be a little higher. I am just making sure. And if I am right, then honestly, I plan on buying it very very shortly (as in like today sometime). |
| #32meadOct 15, 2008 0:38:02 | Just keep in mind that your $60 is not going to get you the Game Table or any of the other apps. That's on a completely different fee schedule. |
| #33General_FelireOct 15, 2008 0:44:41 | Here is another question, I subscribed now where do I go to access it. Is their a delay or is it immediatly? And Mead, thanks for the update. I'm not so dead set on the table top so that is not a big deal for me. Though I do have to say that I wish it was much clearer on what the price actually provides. I wish they listed everything in a very easy to go single list. |
| #34meadOct 15, 2008 0:48:31 | There shouldn't be a delay, but they've been having problems with the rollout. So access might not be forthcoming for a little while. Might be an hour, might be a day, it's hard to tell. Best bet is to "check it later", that's all I can give ya ![]() |
| #35General_FelireOct 15, 2008 0:52:21 | I just discovered what needed to be done. After you pay you must log out of Insider and then log back in. Once you do that it registers and you gain access to the stuff. ![]() I learned it right after posting a message about the problem. ...goes off to play with the monster builder as it could come in handy for his game... I honestly hope and wish that everything turns out well with this. That the benefits I get work and that everything I paid for continues to come to me. Delays are to be expected, but I really hope that delays are not so huge in number. That said, I wish the company a great deal of luck and good fortune on their attempt at the new enterprise. |
| #36marius4Oct 15, 2008 2:21:24 | I am unable to create an account for the WotC website. I went through most every place one might NOT find the DDI subscription links. LOL...Murphy's Law (or something similar). :P Based on my wayward journeying, it sounds like you might be here: https://accounts.gleemax.com/?goto=http%3A%2%2Fforums.gleemax.com%2F When you should be here: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/insider I don't know for sure, but thought I'd post just in case. Also, the logging out thing General Felire mentions sounds good.REGARDING INSIDER: I've purchased a year's subscription and I can access articles, use the bonus tools, and look up powers above 3rd level all just fine. ![]() |
| #37WolfStar76Oct 15, 2008 8:19:57 | Just keep in mind that your $60 is not going to get you the Game Table or any of the other apps. That's on a completely different fee schedule. Actually, I e-mailed Randy about this. He said they haven't decided if they will include those tools to early subscribers or not. So, don't *count* on getting more than what you're paying for, don't expect anything more than 24 magazines, Compendium, and Bonus Tools access. However, it's possible they'll add new tools to early subscribers. It's also possible you'll need to upgrade your subscription for that. Me, I'm ever the optimist. I'd love to see them give at least one of the tools to early subscribers as a thank you. ![]() |
| #38rhenOct 15, 2008 8:52:28 | I'm interested in getting more-or-less immediate feedback about Wizards' launch and implementation today and for the next few days. Okay, it's the next day and since I waited a day after I subscribed so that the bugs would be worked out, I can give you my feedback now. ![]() First, I had no problems subscribing. It was totally painless on my end. I also have no objection to the auto-renewal, but I realize that I'm probably in the minority on that one. As to the integrated website, I love it. I love the direct link to the editorial calendar and the teasers for what's coming. I haven't had a single problem accessing anything and it's all gone smoothly for me. But, again, I gave them a day to iron all the kinks out; I'm a patient person by nature. |
| #39fodiggOct 15, 2008 8:53:44 | Actually, I e-mailed Randy about this. I'm sure they'll use us to beta stuff at the very least. |
| #40mudbunnyOct 15, 2008 8:55:22 | I'm sure they'll use us to beta stuff at the very least. As of DI#10, subscribers to DDI will get the first "non-WotC" chances to kick the tires of the next application to be released which is, IIRC, the character builder. As for the rest of the stuff, well, it would be silly of them to not use us. |
| #41meadOct 15, 2008 8:59:44 | Actually, I e-mailed Randy about this. Let's hope they decide before they take away the early subscriber option. Otherwise that would be the ultimate spit in the face. I don't feel like gambling, and I'm tired of being told one thing and having another happening. It's contemptible. |
| #42WolfStar76Oct 15, 2008 10:19:32 | Let's hope they decide before they take away the early subscriber option. Otherwise that would be the ultimate spit in the face. I don't feel like gambling, and I'm tired of being told one thing and having another happening. To avoid becoming the middleman, here are the questions I asked Randy, and his reply. To that end, could I ask, on behalf of the DDI forums, the following questions? Short version: We haven’t decided those details yet and we aren’t going to decide until after we see how well the launch goes. What I can (and believe I have in a previous Digital Insider) guarantee is that we will honor whatever subscriptions folks sign up. So no matter what we do with our price or our product offering, if you sign up for a year of web-content at $4.95 then you’ll get a year of web content at $4.95. |

I do however, suspect that in a years time when they have it all up (optimistic aren't I) that the renewal price will be more and we will no longer have the option of just web-content. Just my opinion mind you. |

They have about 10% of the product ready now for which they are charging about 35-50% of the previously proposed price for depending upon which of the pricing models mentioned previously that you estimate from, so I suppose they could actually pull it off. | #47incenjucarOct 19, 2008 15:59:53 | Too many threads to see if anyone else has mentioned it, but two features I would love: 1) Not having to re-login every five minutes. At the very least, let my browser record my login and password for me like it does for 99% of the internet. Having to relog constantly is incredibly frustrating. 2) Put some kind of quickie report button in the compendium so we can report errors quickly and easily. At every update you'll get a horrible email flood, but you'll get access to free editors. If it becomes a problem, of course, remove it, but at least try it if at all possible. |
| #48KentinalOct 19, 2008 16:21:52 | 1) It is supposed to be 30 minutes, please check your login in time marks. It clearly is a bug if you get dumped every 5 minutes. 2) A request directed to Cort is more proper. *sighs* No one has time to read threads. |
| #49maurMay 09, 2009 12:18:15 | Wow. I finally decided I'd give wizards even more of my money but when I found that you get put in an auto-renewal status automatically it SERIOUSLY turned me off. I want to test this out for ONE month to see if it's going to be worth paying for a bigger subscription. I don't want to have to deal with trying to get them to stop charging my card if I decide not to. What the heck type of business model is this, they copying the old Columbia Records CD scams? Yes I know it's only $5 a month and at worst I'm looking at paying for 3 months while we go back and forth to try to have it canceled but it still is money that they shouldn't have and time I shouldn't have to waste. Do this to a couple thousand to 10's and it adds up. We've talked about checking this out in a few of the groups that I play with occasionally and everyone has said this type of railroading turns them off. If it was easy to terminate and clean cut they wouldn't force the auto-renewal to try and steal a months worth from you. Kinda makes you wonder if they aren't "banking"on the normal bank policy to write-off disputed charges under the $10-$20 range. They get their money and the customer ends up paying for it anyways (higher fees, rates) to balance their banks write-off ledger. Nice pull guys....nice pull. |

Really, this isn't exactly a hassle. It's like five clicks. |
| #53PaulonMay 10, 2009 3:53:27 | The problem is when it works, it works, but when it doesn't work, judging by the reports and complaints that come up here from time to time, canceling auto-renew becomes a nightmare. For some people the functions of the site regarding such matters as contacting customer service or canceling auto-renewal seem to break consistently, while for others there's no problem. I also have to agree with the sentiment that a forced auto-renewal when signing up is the kind of behaviour that puts me off paying anything, even for a month to try things out. It's unnecessary and the fact that nobody at WotC or Digital River seems to be able to do anything about it despite the complaints doesn't say anything good about how well someone is handling security... If they can't handle something as simple as turning off a compulsory auto-renewal in almost a year, how well are they doing with keeping the transactions secure? |
| #54whitebaronMay 10, 2009 4:54:53 | i have to defend DR in saying that this or paypal has nothing to do with them. they offer this stuff at other sites that use them for payment, so the difficulty might either be importance at wotc, or contractual stuff. |
| #55PaulonMay 10, 2009 5:26:06 | Maybe so. My own interaction with DR hasn't always been exactly positive (don't trust their paid for 2 year download guarantees for software purchased through them or even expect an answer to email queries about those downloads in my experience) so I'm inclined to expect the worst from them. But then again, it's hard to believe a company as widely used as DR for financial payments couldn't fix the problem of auto-renew in a jiffy if the ones paying them to handle matters, ie WotC, would let them, so maybe I'm biased. |
| #56WolfStar76May 10, 2009 9:35:05 | i have to defend DR in saying that this or paypal has nothing to do with them. they offer this stuff at other sites that use them for payment, so the difficulty might either be importance at wotc, or contractual stuff. DR accepts paypal for payments of sales - IE single-purchase items. It is my understanding that they do not support paypal subscriptions - which is a different class of payment system at PayPal. (For example, one can subscribe to websites like totalfark.com via paypal). Mind, I could be misinformed, but that's my understanding of the situation. |
| #57whitebaronMay 10, 2009 10:24:24 | Mind, I could be misinformed, but that's my understanding of the situation. sounds reasonable. but: usually, a 1 month fee is not a subscription. if you drop the auto-renew on the 1 month only, and allow paypal there, many people would be a lot more happy than with the current system. i see the 1 month fee as a single purchase. --- my curent plan with ddi is, to subscribe for 1 month for the divine power content in the CB, then resub for phb 3 some time later (not necessarily in the same month), and maybe do another month for the campaign tools. i do not use dragon or dungeon, and hardly ever would have reason to use the compendium. so this is a perfectly fine payment rate for me, even though i'd pay more for those months. having to cancel autorenew every time after, seems like an insult to the idea of a 1 month trial-subscription. |
| #58WolfStar76May 10, 2009 15:03:25 | sounds reasonable. In a perfect world, I agree with you. For that matter if DR just used their own subscription program/system and charged each transaction as a single PayPal "sale" this matter could likely be avoided. But that's theoretical. I'm sure someone at DR has come up with that concept before me, and there must be a reason why it isn't what's in place. So much for perfect worlds. :/ |
| #59meadMay 11, 2009 7:22:21 | There shouldn't be any "back and forth" to have the auto-renew disabled. | #60WotC_TrevorMay 11, 2009 15:49:31 | i have to defend DR in saying that this or paypal has nothing to do with them. they offer this stuff at other sites that use them for payment, so the difficulty might either be importance at wotc, or contractual stuff. Actually it specifically has to do with the way other people handle subscriptions. Generally people aren't getting a month or three month option for product "subscriptions" through DR - they're getting a license to use a product for something like a year I believe. The different subscription models we offer changed things up so DR and WotC have had to implement a different interface to handle it. This is just my basic understanding of it, but I don't think it has anything to do with any contractual hang-ups. |
| #61WotC_TrevorMay 11, 2009 15:51:17 | That might be how it is now, but when this thread first appeared back in October 2008 there was no such five-click-critter. Correct, but when Maur revived this thread from way back then, the new solution had been implemented for quite some time. I definitely understand being frustrated that you have to turn off auto-renew, but the process for doing so now is relatively painless and I'd be happy to help people with it or point people in the right direction if necessary. |
| #62whitebaronMay 11, 2009 16:51:43 | so if i get this right, the reason for not supporting paypal was that wotc wanted to have an auto-renew feature? if so, this is basically a contractual hiccup, but not between wotc and DR. paypal just does not support regular payments like that, which could be deducted from your account without re-accepting. still, it would be a good idea to drop the auto-renew on 1 month subs, and offer paypal at least for that. |
| #63KentinalMay 11, 2009 17:09:50 | Actually it specifically has to do with the way other people handle subscriptions. Well this does not make much sense to me. A "getting a license to use a product for something like a year I believe" and to use a product for a different time period should not matter if it is for a day or 10 years. I suspect there is a different true answer. |

I suspect there is a different true answer. the difference is auto-renew. DR usually sells subscriptions to services, but does not offer auto-renew. the company itself has to handle it, or the person has to handle that. DR just takes the payments for one year, if you want to resub, for the next year, etc. he might not have it well worded, but that's the way it is, and most likely the problem with paypal, as paypal won't guarantee payment for such a transaction. |
| #65WotC_TrevorMay 11, 2009 17:16:37 | so if i get this right, the reason for not supporting paypal was that wotc wanted to have an auto-renew feature? I don't think the paypal thing had anything to do with the auto-renew feature. If I remember correctly, it had something to do with the way subscription renewals interact differently with DR than they do with PayPal. Speaking on Paypal, I know there's been some progress made on that and I'm hoping to have some more information very soon. the difference is auto-renew. DR usually sells subscriptions to services, but does not offer auto-renew. the company itself has to handle it, or the person has to handle that. DR just takes the payments for one year, if you want to resub, for the next year, etc. Thanks WB. I can't confirm the PayPal part of the statement, but you did a great job of clarifying what I was trying to say. Must be spreading myself out too thin in conversations here : / |

Just making sure the recent respondents noticed this was an ancient thread before getting irritated about someone not knowing every single option and feature. |
