3.5 and insider

I'm deciding whether or not I'm going to want to start paying for this DnD insider bit. My main question is: Does it work for campaigns running 3.5, or is everything in the insider focuses on 4e? I'm holding off on buying 4e because 1. I don't really want to spend the money, 2. I just learned the 3.5 rules and don't feel like relearning/memorizing 3 books, and 3. I think the 3.5 rules are just fine the way they are (with minor tweeking with house rules). So, if I joined insider would I be able to use it's fun tools even though I'm running a 3.5?

They are for the 4.0 ruleset.  There is no support for 3.5 at all.

All support for 3.5 has ceased unless you go Pathfinder.

Like the people above have said, all of the DDI stuff is aimed at 4E. However, if you are interested (and able) to take the fluff from 4E and translate it into 3.X, then DDI might be useful for you.

If you really dont want to spend the money, just buy one month. You get access to all the info, and can store it on your computer.


I was planning to do this, but I enjoy D&DI. Il probably do a couple of more monthly subscriptions, and then switch over to an annual subscription.

Honestly, the rules for 4.0 are better. Its worth switching over. Even after I switched from 3e to 4e, I joined a 3e campaign. The gamers in the group are awesome people, but going back to the 3e game reminded me how much I love 4e.

Really, as much as 3e is better than 2e (in terms of balance, fairness, and efficiency) 4e is better than 3e.

You can translate 4e fluff into 3e rules. But seriously, give 4e a try. Its the future.


4e has been out how long? A year? But already, 3e feels like a game my grandparents played.

Or it's betamax or HD-DVD.

Not all new things are for the better, or have relevance long-term. Time will tell I suppose, but a year post-launch of 4e it's a pretty fractured gaming community versus anything we've seen before.


Play what you like best, and whichever game you can find ready and willing players for in your local area.
