Hi i was thinking of looking into getting 4th edition. I have alot of 3rd edition stuff. I was wondering, what the 4th edition 'core' setting is. Im thinking of selling my third edition stuff, especially my realm books, but might want to hold onto those if 4th isnt happening. So whats the verdict on the core world? and does anyone know if they have a core realm like FR or eberron to be published soon?

I believe that the Forgotten Realms core books will be available sometime between July and September. I am just going by what is posted on amazon right now. As for the "core" worlds, I believe that they are all Greyhawk unless otherwise mentioned. So far I havn't seen anything to contradict this belief yet. I am pretty sure you can make your current realm books compatible until the new ones are released. I too had thoughts of selling of my 3rd Edition set, but it is so large, and I regret getting rid of my AD&D 1st and 2nd edition books, that I have decided to keep all my 3rd Edition stuff in storage for days when I want to get nostalgic. However, I am very happy with what I have read of my 4th edition books, and can't see myself switching back anytime soon, if at all.

The World Wide D&D Day adventure took place near the Barrier Peaks, a site in Greyhawk. While I am not certain that there are no other Barrier Peaks in other realms, it gives me a good feeling that it'll still be a core world.

So sayeth Omnus.

I'm almost certain that it's not Greyhawk, unless it's undergone a vast change. The fact it doesn't use the Wheel cosmology alone should be an indicator of that.

The idea of a centralized shared default campaign world isn't part of the 4E design.

There is a concept called "Points-of-Light" that is as close as you'll get to a world. This concept boils down to "The world is a dangerous place, a few bits and pieces of civilization beat back the darkness".

From what I've read, there aren't going to be any campaign books, maps, etc for "points of light".

Instead, product that's released (like Keep on the Shadowfell) will include "just enough" information to make the module playable. These modules can then be used as adventure seeds for budding GMs to create their own worlds from.

The RPGA will be launching it's next Living campaign in the world of Forgotten Realms. This has caused some people to speculate (including myself, until I'd read other things correcting me) that Forgotten Realms was the "new" default world, but this isn't really the case.

So, the "default" world is one you create yourself - with a few pointers and seeds from WotC. Failing that, it's any pre-published campaign world you feel like picking up and adventuring in.
