"The Update Server Could Not Be Accessed."

I installed the CB today (v. 700) on a machine that's never had an install of it before. When I run it, it gives me the message:

"The Update Server Could Not Be Accessed."

I can continue, but only at levels 1-3 (even though I have an active insider account).

I was never prompted to log in (other than when I originally logged in to get to the download page).

I am behind a firewall, and have not yet tried it from a non-firewall location.

I've rebooted several times, etc.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Tim

I have the exact problem. Let me know if you figure it out.

I even uninstalled then deleted the folders then started over.

You can certainly try to disable your firewall when starting the character builder to see if you get the connection to the server. The check for a new version is done when you start the character builder from the icon/program file and happens before using the launch character builder button in the updater window.

Ditto, close to the same problem...

When I try to update, it says "Files cannot be verified".

Have you tried the tips in the thread stickied at the top of the forum?

Yep. I've confirmed that what's happening is that the download bootstrapper is using the default proxy configuration from Internet Explorer, and behind my firewall, Wizards.com/dndinsider.com is blocked by default.

IF the downloader gave you control over the proxy settings, I could tweak it to allow the download to happen. But basically, the product is currently unusable for anyone who can't get to wizards.com/dndinsider.com through default IE configs...

Wouldn't it be more accurate to say that the product is unusable for those individuals whose (company) firewall blocks wizards.com/dndinsider.com? If the Character Builder is using an http connection to get the data it needs, then it should use the same configuration as IE.

Yeah, I have it working at home, but not at the office... I'm pretty positive that our firewall is blocking a specific port that would be used to access the server... can't be 80 or 8080 cause those are not blocked and wizards.com is not black listed....

If WotC can let us know the port they use, I can get it unblocked, probably.

i hope WotC posts a aolution soon. I've been trying to download the update for a week now and keep getting the "cannot verify files" error and a message sayign that the servers are down for maintenance. Are they really down a week for maintenance???

I'd very much like this resolved so that I can use the new material that has been added.
