www.critical-hits.com/2009/08/17/gencon-...

it says at the bottom of the page that the VTT was just pushed back, they are still planning on bringing it out. But they want to come out with some other tools first.

If WOTC had just said "yes we are planning on bringing out the VTT after we bring out these other tools". Instead of "well we will see about maybe bringing the VTT out after we get out these other tools". I think there would have been alot less people mad. One way makes it sound like they may have scrapped it. The other tells the customer it will be coming, but will be a ways off.  WOTC needs to work on the commucation.

When it gets here I will celebrate but I don't even want to dwell on it otherwise.

Reading that link, that's NOT what it says.

it says:

The online game table has been pushed back, and they’re planning on releasing some unannounced tools first.

Which is what they have been saying here. It doesn't say anywhere that I saw, that they still intend to bring it out.

Don't get me started on the GT or VTT. I'll be here all day explaining how bad it was for WotC to do what they did.

I like that the new block, doesn't have the option to unblock a single post by someone on your list. Much less temptation. You actually would have to go, and unblock them, then re-block them.

Yay!

And to block someone, click on their avatar. There is an option on the persons page under their picture to block. You go to another screen where it asks you, do you really mean to block this person.

I originally joined DDI to start working with whatever VTT ASAP - hopefully, some type of beta. Personally, I have given up and have started using Klooge. I also have tried Battlegrounds. There are a lot of things I like about Klooge and it works well as a VTT. BG is a bit more general and closer to PnP, but my children find Klooge much easier to use. We have started long distance gaming since I travel quite a bit.

That was my impression also. They implied pretty strongly that the GT was next up and we might get it if we locked in our subscription for a year or three. I also bought all the books and everything because I was under the impression that the GT was "coming soon". I don't think I've been more dissapointed in a company in my life (well except disney world)...

Okay, let's say they continued along their original path and released the CB and instead of the Monster Builder, we got the VTT. Now what? We have no way to input monsters or map a dungeon or display our PC's.

IIRC the original plan was for WOTC to do the CB, viewer, map/ dungeon maker and then the game table.   The character viewer was going to be that characters mini in the game table. The maps in the dungeon maker could be imported into the game table. The game table was going to be the last of the "major" tools put out because it needed those other tools to work. The game table was also suposted to come come with some monster "minis" for the DM to use.

That was the plan anyway.

hey, don't use logical fallacies to shoot down a perfectly valid reason, by saying we aren't using logic, when we in fact are. Instead use actual facts to prove your point, it makes you look smarter and less childlike.

Actually they were all in co-development and from what was said at the time in the Beta stage of development and all working fine together. The CV the GT and the map maker which was integrated into the GT. What happened as far as news articles and developer blogs leads me to believe is that the company that was doing the GT and CV was shut down before release and WotC was stuck with a program they didn't know how to finish. Instead of having their IT Development department learn how the GT and CV was made they pretty much just trashed them, and decided to go with something else. Look up D&D gametable on youtube, you'll see several videos that demonstrate how far along the programs actually were.

The demos they showed had several monster minis, and they were talking about converting them from the CAD files used to make the physical minis. As well as having premade 'tokens' to substitute. map files could be edited right inside the GT, and they could import ones made by the developers with full 3D objects in them.

I was fortunate enough to play with both the CV and the GT @ Gencon 2008, and was VERY IMPRESSED.  Granted, it was pretty 'shallow' at that point, but really you could tell that it was going to be awesome.

Basically I originally joined DDI because of those tools, especially the Game Table.  When they 'silently' dropped it off the radar, I (and the rest of my friends who also joined DDI) was (were) extremely disappointed.  So much so, out of the 4 of us, I will likely be the only one to renew after our first year unless they come out and say that it is coming.

That said, I'm staying around because the other updates, the tools they DO have now are great!  The Char Generator is AWESOME, if not a bit cludgy, but works perfect.  I don't /really/ need to buy all the physical books past the original Core set because of the Compendium, and having access to all Dragon and Dungeon is great, since I can DL the PDFs and read at my leisure.

I do hope and wish they'll say something about it coming, but they haven't really.  At the Q&A session at this years Gencon, they wouldn't actually say one way or the other if it was coming.  They did kind of lead us to believe that they're working on it, but didn't flat out say it.  They said that they were in fact 'tired of disappointing' everyone by announcing tools and not delivering in a timely manor, that they have decided to release tools when they're ready without really pre-announcing them.  A very good move in my opinion, but one that a mob mentality of a whole 'community' will not agree with.

Please bring it though, as I want it, and know of LOTS of other people who would sign up to DDI if it came.  But, I'm sure Wizards is quite aware of it, as this is a HUGE deal in the community.

I'm also pretty sure that they now know we(the fans) won't just let it drop. So they are diggin up the code and putting someone on it. Or maybe not. Either way I won't buy another D&D book until I have access to the GT (Game Table) of course with their current record of putting out software it'll take them 3-5 years before they get it out and by then they will be designing 5th edition, so it will be too late.

Well, since the VT doesn't calculate any rules, it shouldn't really matter whether you have the monster stats in a second window next to the battlefield or in a word file or at sheet of paper next to your keyboard.

Well, the VT wouldn't enforce any rules, but since it was planned to have a combat manager, it would need to be able to execute the rules when needed. I believe it was going to allow you to tag mini's with effects and track hitpoints and more.

So it would need all the monster stats and player stats to be able to do all that.

There's a difference between enforcing the rules, and not needing them.

The youtube videos show this. It shows a nearly complete GT (Game Table). The only thing they admitted was missing in the video was a character sheet veiwer within the GT.
