A Trojan in Monster Builder?

Aug 13, 2009 9:33:37 My McAfee security software identified the patcher_update.exe as a Trojan and quarantined it. I think it's probably ok, but I want to hear from the WotC staff before I restore it. I tried to report it on the WotC help site and the Monster Builder bug report site, but those sites weren't working for me for some reason.

WotC staff; please e-mail me to let me know if this program is safe.

The Help site was experiencing technical issues yesterday, but it should be working now.

Please go to Customer Service and log in using your log in information that you use for the forums, then click on "Email Us", then for topic choose "Online Gaming">"D&D Insider">"Monster Builder".

Aug 13, 2009 21:40:21 Well, in a really technical sense it might be a trojan. However, it is not malicious at all.

Does the Character Builder do the same thing?

I am having the same problem. And no CB has no issue, it is just the MB.

We have been aware of an issue for a little while where McAfee in particular flags our updater as a trojan.

This is due to the fact that we spawn off a seperate thread that requests higher level permissions to allow the updater to work successfully on Vista machines. Since this thread does not have its own user interface, McAfee sometimes registers a false positive.
