| #1je_apostropheJun 10, 2008 11:47:21 | The other day I wrote the following in a reply to Ken Tropp:

| #2blackflagonJun 11, 2008 0:52:52 | Wicked cool. Now it just needs to create some kind of local cookie to track changes and avoid the "refresh = reset" problem. That and I need to shell out to get an iPhone. (Like that will ever happen with my funds!) LOL Either way, very well done. Maybe KT should hire you to drum up some Compendium or Character Builder love. ![]() |
| #3herucaJun 11, 2008 1:58:41 | That's pretty cool, especially considering it only took you one day to put together. |
| #4sentientbeanJun 11, 2008 2:37:24 | I don't have an Iphone, but I gotta say that I love this. Goes to show what results you can obtain in a short period of time from ingenuity and hard work! |
| #5shadrachtJun 11, 2008 6:50:05 | Excellent work. Looks clean, very functional, and useful. |
| #6gargoyle117Jun 11, 2008 11:46:06 | I love the idea of mobile applications, but I believe it is a waste of time for Wizards to develop for the iPhone. With only about 6 million iPhones sold worldwide, their impact on the Billion phone a year market is relatively miniscule. WotC's efforts would be better spent developing tools for JAVA, which would be usuable on nearly all phones, or better yet COMPLETING DDi to begin with. |
| #7herucaJun 11, 2008 12:14:49 | Apple may ship 18 million 3G iPhones this year I agree that WotC probably should not spend their time on this, but it would sure be nice if they allowed others to do it for them. |
| #8xanthaisJun 11, 2008 12:19:27 | True, it's only 6 million phones at present, but the new, cheaper, and better 3G iPhones that Jobs just unveiled this week (starting at $199 for the 8GB), will see that market shoot way up considering the prices of the originals. Now if only the iPhones weren't just for AT&T service...... |
| #9je_apostropheJun 11, 2008 12:20:37 | I agree that it is not a priority for Wizards to make this application. In my opinion, the ideal would be a web API to get the data from the compendium/builder, so that someone (me) could build the app and not have to re-engineer all that content. (Not to mention it would probably be a copyright violation.) Jay |
| #10je_apostropheJun 12, 2008 8:12:23 | I guess when there's nothing to complain about in a post it goes the way of the dodo? I was hoping to hear about some features ideas, etc. One thing this has got me thinking about is producing a simple iPhone initiative tracker and other common meat-space utilities. |
| #11herucaJun 12, 2008 8:24:16 | How about a nice little dice roller mini-app? |
| #12gargoyle117Jun 12, 2008 9:15:23 | The post goes the way of the dodo because that is a perfect analogy. The iPhone has such a minor impact on the average gamer's play that it is not worth Wizards spending the time to develop for it. There are hardly any of them out there. I was not kidding when I said a billion cell phones a year are sold. Grab the SDK and go to town. Make your own aps for the iPhone. It's best that way. If Wizards spends any time on it, they should make a Java app. That would be accessable from any phone made in the last 5 years. Now that would be a tool worth developing that could reach a sizable portion of their market. |
| #13hellmuteJun 12, 2008 17:46:46 | While they are at it, why don't they also delay everything else and make a PSP version of the website for people to be able to view things like the Rules Elements Compendium on their PSP so they don't need a whole laptop to look things up at the gaming table. |
| #14vraymarJun 17, 2008 13:07:31 | How about a nice little dice roller mini-app? There is one, if you haven't hear of it here it is: http://yoav.org/dice/ BUT, if you mean with "nice" an app that could show you a 3d dice roller sensible to shakes then I greatly agree with you. True, WotC will not (and SHOULDN'T) spend time with such a thing because is no priority but roleplayers and developers could make tools like these. Besides and quite frankly, I hardly see WotC making a great development on electronic devices, it is simply not its market nor style. Still, I totally agree with je_apostrophe about some API from compedium/builder. That could make the dndinsider service more interesting for everyone. Yet again, I don't see WotC so bold and visionary. |
| #15herucaJun 17, 2008 14:08:48 | Yeah, I meant something with either 3D dice or photos of dice to show the results, not just boring numerals. And I love the idea of shaking the phone to trigger a roll, once you've selected what dice to roll. |
