A slightly different take on the "What ever happened to the Character Visualizer" thread:

Whilst we all wait expectantly for some sort of announcement as to when we will see something about the Character Visualizer, are there any places we can acquire additional portraits for the Character Builder. The ones included are great, but additional portrait options would be very helpful. As I am not an artist myself, I was hoping WoTC might have additional portraits available we could download.

you can download any picture and save it to a folder somewhere on your computer and use it with the character builder by simply going to that folder when you go to pick a portrait. Pretty much every image format is supported and no matter the size of the image it will show up, though when you go to the character sheet you may have to zoom in and realign the image the way you want it to appear on the character sheet print out before printing.

I do this all the time, using various images from Comic Books, to Anime, to Video Game Art, to pictures I've found searching the web. Its one of the first functions that was possible with the builder. So basically just search some never winter nights site save their images and upload them to your builder image folder.

I’ve had the same problem. One of my online game players just rolled up a goliath barbarian. Guess what! No pictures for goliaths or barbarians (other than the default barbarian).

However, it’s easy enough to just grab your own picture and pop it in the character portraits folder of the character builder (I can’t recall the path at the moment. I’m at work!).

You can get suitable pictures from the core books, either scanned or from a PDF, or take a look at the WotC galleries and take an image from there. There’s also plenty of fantasy character art online, and I don’t imagine you would be infringing any copyright laws if your sole purpose was obtaining an image for your character sheet. It’s just a matter of cropping the image to get the portrait you like. I think the stock portraits that come with the builder are 305 x 278 pixels in size, so just resize your cropped image to match.

Edit: Oh, Kurama got there first with the advice!!

I think that the Character Builder will automatically resize any pictures you choose...

Can images be altered within the builder, or do you have to use a graphics package beforehand?

The CB will resize them (I think) but I don't believe that it has any sort of cropping abilities or anything like that.

A good place to find portraits are the character portraits made for Neverwinter Nights at NWVault. A lot of good stuff there.

It can load 99% of the image files I have tried to put into it, I forget which one it didn't, but it doesn't resize them at all. So if your original picture was not square but still cool, the one in the builder's new size is greatly exagerated.

I have found that the default image viewer in vista works fine for cropping squares for portraits and takes all of 2 seconds.

Thats the problem, if the image is to big you get this horribly scrunched picture on the character sheet, hence my advice about zooming it with the center mouse button then shifting the image around with the left for a closer if not tighter image when you go to print.
