#2 Plaguescarred1 Sep 24, 2012 17:59:09	Unless you're a weaponsmith and have access to forging equipments, you cannot turn a longsword into a short sword.  If you ever do, it will be made of whatever material the original sword was made of.  Steel, iron etc..
#3 Elendur Sep 25, 2012 9:28:15	It's really a DM call, not covered by an rules edition that I'm aware of.  For example if I were your DM, and this was an uber magic sword, I would let an Elrond-level crafter split it into a short sword and dagger.  Of course you would have to go on a quest to retrieve a new hilt for the dagger, etc.
