laughterforever.com/Shados_Generator/

Alpha version up for testing at large.  It currently creates and populates the first page of Shado's character sheet from iplay4e URLs/files.  The main goal of this alpha period is to test the application with a much wider array of characters than I could do on my own.  I fully expect that this first version will break for certain characters, but I need everyone's help to find those issues.

This should be obvious, but note again that this is an ALPHA release.  Meaning the software is nowhere near a complete state.  Expect bugs, but please report them back here.  This application is open source (right-click in-app, or browse to the installation directory), so feel free to send me PMs with code fixes.  If enough people are interested in contributing we may end up setting up a Subversion repository or something for collaboration.

Oh, and before people ask/comment, there are certain things that currently won't be populated either because it's not in an IP4XML file or it's near impossible to know where to put it.  Examples are resistances, and certain combat notes.  The app also doesn't currently resize text to fit its box, but we'll get that in soon.

Otherwise have fun, and please break my app. Smile

The skills did not populate for the 5 characters I tested in the program.

But looks great though thanks.

Just pushed out a new version that fixes light armor wearers.  Hopefully that fixes things for you, but if it doesn't, do me a favor and PM me the links to the IP4 chars you're using.

I need to know if people are still interested in this, before I continue any work on it.  Are people not interested/using it, or are they just not finding any more bugs past the above one?

If people aren't interested, then that's ok, but I'll keep my development and the app for private use...

I use it.  The only problem I have had since your update is that the 1st character I load no matter which one never shows skills.  When I go and load a 2nd character the skills show up.

Still love the sheet.  I print it off and use it at the table.

That's a neat trick.   If you re-load the 1st character a second time do they then show up?  Do me a favor and PM me links to all the chars your using on iplay4e so I can test with them.

Also, does it really stop on the skills or does it stop earlier?  It's easy to miss that it didn't populate, say, Passive Insight as well, which is populated before skills.  The processing order (right now) is: General (Name, Race, etc.), Attributes, Defenses, Defense Modifiers, HP, Surges, Initiative, Speed, Vision, Passives, Skills, Powers, Weapons.

The application has been updated to v0.35.   Current users will be prompted for update automatically.  Changes in this version:

  • Adds second page of the character sheet

  • Parsing for all data on the second page.  Note that some data isn't in iplay4e's file, so some fields are missing or will not be placed in their "best" location.  For example, the file does not have the required information for me to automatically put your equipped gloves in the "Hands" slot.  This is similar to Gender on the first page: the file doesn't have it, so I can't populate it for you.

  • Added quick-and-dirty dialog box that allows the user to know where parsing broke down for easier bug reporting

  • Updated code so that parsing continues for the character even if a problem is encountered

  • Fixed bug that didn't allow for selection of ranged-only weapons on the first page

  • Fixed bug for parsing of initiative values

  • Fixed formatting bug for weapon attack modifiers

Some additional notes:

  • The sheet doesn't differentiate between carried and stored money; they're added together

  • Only Feat and Feature names are populated, descriptions aren't included due to text length restrictions

  • Next planned feature is parsing of .dnd4e files

v0.37 of the application has just gone live. Current users will be prompted for update automatically.

Changes in this version:

  • Adds support for parsing of CB files (*.dnd4e)

  • Updated equipment parsing so that the application makes its "best guess" with regards to equipment slots.  For example, if an item is equipped and has the word "Boots" in its name, the application will automatically put it into the Feet slot.

  • Updateded dialog box that shows if/when parsing broke down with an email address for easier notification of problem reports

  • Moved all user operations to MenuBar format, removed existing data entry forms and buttons

  • Removed author's debugging quick-buttons ("Asraangar" and "Anvil")

  • Added icons and program folder information to the installer file

  • Fixed bug that made the graphics disappear when cancelling a print operation

Some additional notes:

  • For the moment, more fields are populated on the sheet when using CB files compared to iplay4e characters.  This is due to the IP4XML format missing some minor data items.  Talks have taken place with the iplay4e people regarding this issue.

  • Next planned feature is creation of a modified, single-page version of the character sheet.  This version would remove the powers and weapons panes from the 1st page as they are redundant to the power cards provided by the CB and also of limited usefulness beyond level 1 due to their count restrictions (5 powers and 3 weapons).  Current plan is to use the space for valuables, experience, languages, and possibly feat/feature descriptions.  Suggestions are welcome on this topic.

Are you still working on this or is it dead?

Not dead.  For curiousity's sake, are you hoping for any specific new features, or have you found any bugs that need fixed?

Hey buddy,

I can't get the "import from iplay4e url" function to work.  I fear that my site redesign may have made it harder to figure out what URL to use.  How are you expecting them to be formatted?

Also, is there any way to invoke your program with an iplay4e URL in the first place?  It'd be pretty sweet to add this as a view/export option at iplay4e...

Yup, it's broken alright.  It was due to the redesign, but it's a simple fix.  If you paste in just the key it still works.  For the record, these three ways were available:

  1. {key}

  2. http:// iplay4e.appspot.com/characters/viewSheet?key={key}

  3. http:// iplay4e.appspot.com/#{key} (broken at the moment)

I've already got the search stuff coded into inCombat so I think for this app I'll just steal that code and make the import stuff search-only.  Doesn't make much sense to have people paste in stuff now that searching is available.

Looks like it is possible to invoke the application from a web page, but I don't think you're going to like it.   It has to be from a Flash app on the page (help.adobe.com/en_US/AIR/1.5/devappsflex...).  I'll play around with it on my site to check things out, and I'll let you know what I find.

That's awesome that you've got that working already.  I can't wait to see it - in both apps.

That doesn't bother me.  I don't want to _require_ anyone to have flash or air, but I don't mind a little page with a little flash app to enable an optional extra feature.

Actually I'm having problems with some of the text fields being too small. For example the boxes for sources in the feats section don't have enough space for a specific book and a page number as suggested in the format PHB ### for example.
