Already some errata?

I saw that the Stealth rules are being, lets say, up graded (errata really) in the D&D Compendium. http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/4ask/20080801a

Already some errata? Just after a few weeks 4th has been set loose on the world? Wasn't it play tested? What king of play testing was involve here?

Shouldn't at least a year go by before some weird/rare/unique situation happens in game play? You know, before somebody notice that the rules need some tweeking?

Worst part is that in the future, if you don't pay for DDI, you will not get access to rule errata.

Stealth had generated an amazing amount of discussion on the boards. The modifications to the rule seem common-sense and straightforward. I'm glad they moved quickly to adjust the rule, regardless of when they realized that they needed to make the change. Using the DDI is in keeping with Wizard's strategy for DDI.

I believe I read that parts of DDI will be free, including the errata. The Compendium itself may not be part of the free service, but the errata should be available for free and downloadable separately.

Don't think of it as a "book," think of game systems with complex rules as "software."

Pushed out the door ASAP with updates found during production of physical structure (books or discs) required almost immediately after launch.

On the upside, we get things faster than if it was held onto forever.

of course their is errata. their are millions of stupid people out their that cant read a rule properly. So they have to change its wording in a way that cannot possibly be mistaken for somthing else. The half elf racial ability for instance. It states in the book that you can choose 1 at will power from another class and use it as an encounter power. the errated it to add 1 at will 1st level power. sure they should think of the morons when they right rules but they write it in a way that makes sense to them.

Not true

You can find the updates in a free PDF here.

Yes there are going to be Erratas. There are millions of eyes looking at the pages, they're bound to find some of the wording of rules confusing, ambiguous, or incorrect. I've been impressed with the speed at which the erratas have come out. There are still many 3.5 books that need errata that [to my knowledge] didn't recieve one, which was a major complaint on the Future Releases forum. Members were making their own errata threads for the books that were being released.

I think it is great that we are getting errata published much faster in this version. There are thousands and thousands of rules in these books. There is going to be errata. It is great that we are getting it. Have you read a fiction book lately? Those aren't edited correctly, I'm not sure how you expect there not to be an error or two or even 20-30 in books this long.

Looking at it from a six sigma process improvement perspective, their sigma error rate seems to be pretty low for something like a rules document.

Also some of the errata is rules modifications because as much as they playtest they do have a limited number of people to playtest and they can't think of every possible thing a player could attempt. Some of the errata has been to tone down a power that with just the right combination becomes unbalanced or broken. Some of the errata seems to be purely editorial/printing errors which happens all the time to RPGs (especially).

Sure not everyone will have a computer to get/keep up with the errata but in this day and age that's a small percentage and any decent game/hobby shop that wants to please customers and sell 4e books should make printed out copies of hte errata available for those who ask for it because they can't get online to get it themselves.

Ah yes, not only a much-needed errata, but also a plug of D&DCompendium. Why update the errata files when you can put that off for a week and force everyone to try out your shiny new (and still broken and under-updated) search engine.

Sure, it doesn't have the promised Warforged or Artificer information there. Sure, half the time searched for powers don't show up.
But hey, it's the only place you can find the fix for a crazy-broken mechanic people have been complaining about for two months.

Since this was shown to be untrue earlier in the thread you must have decided to outright lying, because that is what your post is.

The errata is available as a free download and not solely thru DDI

He is not lying.

While the errata's may be available free of charge, the stealth revision has only been updated in the Compendium so far, and has not made its way into the Player's Handbook Errata PDF.

As has already been pointed out, the last errata
(here: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/updates)
was last updated 07/02/2008 or July 2nd and over a month ago.

The stealth update plugging the compendium is dated 08/01/2008 or a full month after the most recent PHB errata and at least 2 business days ago.

The Living Forgotten Realms mailing list puts it on good authority that the stealth changes *will* be in the Errata, in fact they hope to have the errata updated before GenCon, at which point the changes will go from mostly official to fully official.

Given it's current beta status, the Compendium isn't yet an official rules source - or at least, not through any reference I can find.

The RPGA will be using the updated stealth rule at GenCon, however - per request of WotC. Just for what it's worth.

Which is completely unacceptable. Rules changes shouldn't go into the Compendium prior to being officially errata-ed, it just causes confusion.

I've heard rumor that the procedure for Errata (once everything is running full speed) is that Errata will appear in the Compendium first, then the Errata documents.

Of course, we're quite a ways from that just yet, and I hope, if that IS implemented, they will add a "recent changes/additions" option to the Comendium as well.

Peronsly i would rathr it hit the conmpendium first that way it is updated in a almost"intentanous way. When they realease a update to the Errata they only do it when their is multiple changes, that way the dont have to spend all their time in one document. So weather its the begining or end eve every month, every 2 months or whatever.

In my perfect world, they'd update the Errata every month - even if the "update" for the month is just to change the date on the document.

Of course, this is impractical, as they're also developing new books constantly, and each of those will (probably) have Errata, and those would need to be consistently updated, etc.

There was a sage advince on the Stealth change already and they stated that this would be in the next update for the Errata.

The point of the compendium is it's a database of the rules so is easily updatable. The errata updates to avoid being constantly redownloaded are only updated as needed (theoreticaly every couple of months or when there's a lot of changes). Since the errata pdf's aren't incremental it'd be a lot of bandwidth to update and have people redownload them for every piece of errata.

Also the latest errata update was on July 17th (though the core books weren't updated) and includes not only the 3 core books but the DM screen as well as a new link for a zip of all the pdf's together. The stealth changes came about after the 17th.

Which is fine if you *know* it's been updated. I doubt they're going to have an update everytime they fix a typo.
