I am tired of passively waiting, I have waited seven moths for mounts in Character Builder now. But I am so very close to giving up. But before throwing in the towel I now offer my help, for free, with data entry or any stuff that can expedite the inclusion of my sought-after animals.

My resume includes knowledge of XML, SQL and Progress database engines, and various web-related programming languages. I am fully compatible with any version of Microsoft Office and its open source counterparts. I speak both Mac and Designish fluently*. My excellent stamina and physical prowess which is a side effect of the sports I practice will prove very useful for all-nighters doing data entry.

I look forward to hearing from you soon!

* Designish sample: The GUI in this wire-frame does not conform to UX guidelines and we need another persona to fill these use cases. Mac sample: One double mocha latte, thank you!

WotC turning down free help wouldn't surprise me.  WotC turning down free, qualified help would be pretty silly though.  This is probably not the best way to get their attention, perhaps PM Paolo with a resume?  Good luck though.

WotC are a west coast company I live on the east coast (that would be the Swedish east coast). This was a bit tongue in cheek, but I really would like to help with anything that I can be of assistance with.

I can help too. I know how to use the DOS command line and can type 63 words per minute. I look forward to working with you.

There are far to many legal issues that stop WoTC from accepting free help.

While it's nice that you offered, it's just not practical.

Oh forgot to mention that I can make perfect scrambled eggs.  You know what I mean: not wet but not brown, just perfect little nuggets of custardlike goodness.

I see PaoloM lurking about the forums.  Wonder if he'll respond to this?

There hasn't been anything from PaoloM since last week when he said he'd try and get us some information.

He probably got written up for even saying that. So I'm sure if he says something else here he'll get suspended without pay.

Oh if he's on then I'd better tout my programming experience! I have programmed two games in Apple BASIC: Quiz Game and Quiz Game II. I have practical experience with both the "INPUT" and the "PRINT" statements and can number lines with ease.

Well, let's see. I have some experience with software, but really, more chefs could ruin the soup.

HOWEVER, I have extensive* experience in advising and instructing customers in the features and use of web-based tools and other digital resources, advertising upcoming developments in our resource and service offerings, liaising with key customer groups, and handling questions in a customer service environment.

Might be useful. I dunno.

@drnick if is a lie we only use goto

...

Positivity and a willingness to contribute are always good to see, so it's cool of you to offer, Cathak. I will concur, however, that accepting free work can be a net headache, or at least takes some real thought to integrate. Drawing my own own webdev and/or webdev_mngr experiences:

- Data entry requires granting dangerous permissions to the Data, so you'd have to be vetted and trusted. QA requires access to the staging servers, being in the loop on development processes. Accepting code patches requires giving access to the code, helping you get a sandbox set up, and - even if there are good security policies in place - trusting the hell out of you. These are all non-trivial expenses.

html_removed
- Free (or even lowly-paid) labor will, generally, (not including Cathak), have a tendency to flake because of their lessened stake in things. In open source, I gather that there are a lot more well intentioned would-be supporters than there are actual people submitting patches. If I was to take on free help, I would have to manage that and make sure the person does in fact want to stick with it. (If I was offering to help with free QA with your webapp, but flaked out for a week and then decided I was too busy with my day job, you're actually know in the hole by 1 week, having missed out on a chance to give that task to someone else.)

- The Tragedy of Brook's Law: adding more manpower to a late project makes it later. (There are nuances. For just inputting a big mass of text, more manpower *might* help; and adding more manpower can in the long run increase output once it is integrated and up to speed; but none of this gets us our Sweet Mounts or my precious Dark Sun Themes faster.)

So, wall-of-text but I guess this stuff interested me. It's a sweet offer, but there are complexities (and it would be good if folks didn't interpret not picking up on such an offer in a negative light). There are many webapps trying to do cool RPG/D&D things that could use help. (Ex: Maptools, iplay4e, i4e.)

It's illegal for a company to not pay someone for work. It opens up all kinds of legal issues such as ownership of work.

Simply put, a company must offer some form of compensation for any work done in it's behalf, because there are things like taxes and such that must be paid to the MAN (government). How do you figure out the value of that when it was done for free?

Yeah, this is going nowhere fast, of course - Wizards would be fools to do this via any means except hiring permanent or temporary employees. Way too many entanglements to consider anything else.

On the other hand, I thought the Mac comment was amusing.

Point taken. I will revise my offer. I will not work for less than one song gifted through iTunes or Amazon or a 1 month subscription to D&D Insider per 8 hour worked. So, should I need 40 hours to procss the less than 90 mounts (last time I counted) I should expect no less than *pinkie to grinning mouth* five songs or moths subscription as payment.

I'm a full-time Mac user since 1991 (before that I was Amiga to 100%, baby). I only boot into Windows for Character Builder and code testing and drink my coffee strong and black.

Legality and not paying isn't the issue (how many unpaid interns are in service in companies every year for example).  The real issue is they can't rely on you, they don't have first call on your time, they have no recourse if you go off in a huff over a decision.  Without a contract its a grey area as to who own copyright for code you've written.  Without you in their offices they've got no way to guarantee you're not sharing code downloads with others (and while any employee can steal code, its easy to prove theft just by them taking it off site, but if they upload it to you, it gets more complex).

Additionally, the intra office camaradarie is important to a small development team, being present while not technically essential in this day and age brings many benefits.  Not to mention that if you need clarification on how a rule works, you can just call up the Mike Mearls and see if he's got 2 secs to walk you through the official interpretation.

Open source projects bypass most of these issues by their inherent nature, but once a closed source project is in place, a company has to protect that status.

Both methods of development definatley have their flaws.

Now, I'd accept callijg on WotC to develop an open souirce rules engine and data entry app.  They can enrypt and provide data, along with a character management gui and character sheet app and an open source community could manage the rules engine side of things to keep that complex side of things better man powered... thats a division of labour that could work in WotC's favour.

I doubt it though!

HA HA HA.

Nice try. But it has to be fair value. And sadly, your standards of fair value can't be subsituted.

But, I'm willing to pay you that to come over and clean.

Many internships offer some sort of compensation, such as school credit and experience.

If an internship isn't part of a school or trade school program, in most states, unpaid internships are illegal.

Having an up to date Character Builder has additional value to me. YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT MY STANDARDS! Stop making assumptions about people and discuss the topic please.

He's not wrong, and I forgot to take account of the class credit for interns.  Its basically all to do with not doing something for free what a company making a profit could be paying someone a proper wage for.  Its ok to have volunteers for a short lived beta program, but not to have volunteers for long term testing - for example.  One isn't a job the other is.

He's also not bitching at you about standards - its again comes down to the Fair Labor act and minimum wage and so forth...

This, in my experience, is typical talking to role players (or other nerds). Say something tongue in cheek and one or two will bound to go all out 100%, full monty serious back on you, dragging the whole bunch into a negative spiral. Can a mod please close this thread?

If you want to work for WotC DDI there are two ways I guess:

1.) Write a letter of application and send it to the appropriate address
2.) Write a web based character builder which works (maybe has not all the data in it), and make yourself known in the community.

Posting on a forum that you want to help them probably won't work.

Nope. I know it was "tongue in cheek". However, if you really want to help, and I guess you do, even if you live on the opposite side of the country, option 2.) is probably the best way to do it. If I currently wouldn't be so overloaded at my workplace, I would do it myself :P
