| #1ScottomirJul 31, 2008 9:18:26 | I'm curious if anybody here has news about the voice application in the DDI Gaming Table? Anybody know if it is a new application, or built with an existing application, or how stable/reliable/audible it may promise to be based on experiences in previous programs? The reason I'm so intensely curious is because I, like many other people, got tired of waiting for the Virtual Gaming Table. So I made one of my own by piecing together free applications already online: * SKYPE for voice * EDITGRID for the real-time battleboard * MS-PAINT to shrink down and label graphics as mini icons * PHOTOBUCKET to host the images This works so well that, honestly, my players and I are questioning whether we even need DDI VGT at all, particularly if the price proves to be as steep as initial statements suggest. However, the only weakness in our set-up is SKYPE, which doesn't always provide stable, high-quality voice in a group conference call. Hence the real purpose for my question: What are the odds that DDI VGT voice will be better and more reliable than SKYPE? I appreciate any insights folks may be able to share with me. Thanks! |

Have you tried teamspeak in place of Skype? |

The VOIP feature is integrated to the D&D Game Table and the service is provided by VIVOX. They are our partners in this project, and are known for providing VOIP to products such as Eve Online or Second Life. |

| #6ScottomirAug 01, 2008 17:39:25 | Thanks for the information! My only prior experience with integrated voice is WORLD OF WARCRAFT, which left a fair bit to be desired. My guild eventually switched over to using VENTRILO (others had tried Teamspeak before and were negative about it). VENTRILO was normally stable and reliable, though some players complained about it and it wasn't free. I don't have any experience with EVE or SECOND LIFE...has anyone played these games online and can share reactions to the voice component? Anybody familiar with VIVOX or have played their Sony games online? Basically, here's the crux of my quandry: If I end up having to pay for a voice application, our current solution wouldn't really be "free". If DDI VGT shows promise of providing substantially improved voice communication in addition to its other features, it potentially is really worth waiting and paying for and I shouldn't sink too much more effort into my makeshift solution of different online programs. |
