It's taking longer to print an Essentials Character than it does to create one. Printing either to CutePDF or directly to the printer either hangs the computer or crashes Silverlight almost every time. Same results from three different computers.

Liking the program. It is running faster, but printing is becoming a real hang up.

I print just fine as long as speed is concerned, but I am experiencing another kind of printing issue.

Page 2 and 3 of the character sheet do not fit the width of the page. Obviously text is missing.

Page 1 and 4 print just fine though, weird.

I'm on a MAc with Firefox, could that be the reason, who knows.

Just to go back on topic, I agree that printing needs some all around fixing and polishing.

I'm on a PC with Firefox, and seeing the same thing sometimes. Sometimes pages 2 and 3 print fine. Sometimes, a bit of the right side of the page is cut off. Yes, weird.

It is still slow printing, but it does work....

although now there is a new problem pages 1-3 are not scaled to fit A4 paper properly cutting off the right hand side of the page.

I'm having the same problem as DMaple. It's browser independant, OS independant (I noticed exactly the same thing posted in a mac specific thread) and seems to have been introduced sometime since the Web CB went live, which is to say it didn't happen last time I tried printing characters, sometime in december.

First I have to print to PDF so that it won't cut off the edges of all my pages, now It resizes the pages specifically to make sure it cuts off parts when I do. I'd only just resigned myself to the idea that to get a portrait of my own character that I'd have to open up the PDF's afterwards in image manipulation software to doctor my own JPG of choice in and now I can't even get a full character sheet.

Where has this latest problem come from, and what is being done to fix it? This is really getting intolerable.

[edit] - To confirm, I tried printing straight to paper rather than PDF, and it does exactly the same thing.

Yeah I can confirm this for me too and I'm running IE8 on Win7 so it seems pretty universal.

Another issue I had with printing, which I posted in the bug thread in the other forum is that occassionally it prints blank sheets instead of a character sheet. That one is hard to pin down though and may be specific to my setup.

same problem here.

using w7-64bit with firefox, the second and the third page are cut on the right side.
i "fixed" this problem setting Primopdf on "print in landscape" so with the a4 in an horizontal position the right edge is fine.
oddly, with PrimoPDF, the quality of the pdf i print is SO low that when i zoom to 120% i can't read anything on the sheet.
switching to Nitropdf or similiar seems to have fixed the problem, but the quality is still... lacking.

Same problem here. I use the original Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro, but printing seems to be bugged.

I'm not able to print at all; it won't even open the preferences box, and when I click print, it closes without sending anything to the print queue!  Very frustrating.  (Other web apps print just fine, so I'm stymied.)

Ah, after several attempts I finally got a solution how to print page 2 and 3 correctly without beeing cut off at the right side:

You just have to adjust skaling in your printer properties to 90% and then it fits fine.

Doesn't work here - tried it and just got a smaller but still cut-off printout.

Same here, printing cuts off the edge.

However Acrylium's solution works for me, scale to 90% and it prints fine.

Will wizards ever figure out scaling / resizing?

Shrinking to 90 percent not working here either, still missed text on the right side. It would be nice for someone to let us know when it's fixed, to save ink and forests in trial and error.

Same problem here, lots gets cut off on the right edge. Tried several different browsers, tried printing to paper, pdf and XPS..same result every time.
Doesn't seem to crop the page with the power cards though, just all the others.
Also the sheet in the web browser shows as cropped as well afterwards, making me think it does some funky stuff after you tell it to print and sends a cropped image to your printer.

Edit: And resizing it in the print preferences does not help. Printing to A4 size

Printing speed is fine for me and quality is good.

I and other group members are experiencing the right-hand-side cutoff problems many of you have mentioned. We think it's something to do with the difference between A4 and the US Letter-size paper. We suspect that WotC think we are all Americans and all use their system. Shame on them! There is another universe beyond their borders. I haven't yet found any comment from WotC on this issue. Come on guys, our money is as good as US money. Sort it out for the rest of the world please?

I have an HP Photosmart Premium than prints everything just fine, except it doesn't print anything from character builder.  It sucks the paper through however many pages, but makes like they are all supposed to be blank.

That happened to me once. I saved the character, closed out the browser and reopened the character. After that the sheet printed fine. Try that and see if it works.

The right side is being cropped during printing for me too. Just joined up, fresh install, new character created, tried to print on both A4 and US letter to paper and pdf (via adobe pro 8). (on Mac OSX running safari). Tried closing everything down and even did a reboot to be sure. No joy.

I can report that for me at least, the builder is no longer cropping the second and third pages when I print.

Instead, it is cropping the first three pages when I print. And it's cutting more off, as well. It lines up suspiciously well with the edge of the Item pages, making it look like it's simply taking the size from that page and slicing it off the rest from there. It does indeed physically cut the page off in the Builder rather than merely on the printed file or paper.

I would really appreciate some kind of official or semi-official acknoledgement that this is even being looked at, personally, as it is understandably now an increasingly major problem. Especially given that the problem has apparently gotten worse.

I tried printing my groups Characters last night and ran into the same problem.

Last level it cropped an inch off pages 2 & 3. This level it cropped from all the pages. Its incredibly annoying as that inch includes things like the skill values.

Any suggestions on away around this ?

I seem to be having all the same problems here (Mac, Firefox) - cutting off pages 2 & 3 in essentials format, and 1-3 in Character Builder format. Tried PDF'ing, printing to both A4 and Letter formats - no matter what format I try to print to, the right hand side is trimmed off. Given that I bought this damn subscription for easy updating and printing of everyone's character sheets...not happy. Argh!

I'm not able to even log in using Chrome as usual.  I now have to use IE, but it only prints a remnant of the WotC webpage instead of my character sheet.  I sent it to CutePDF instead and got a small snapshot of the first page of my character sheet, as if it were part of a frame on a webpage.  Sucks.

@Firemanfred: Your issue is not the standard "I can't print!" issue. Go here and follow the steps to see if it fixes your problem:

community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/758...

@Scarydan: There are workarounds though they don't always work:

I have, by trial and error, found a workround for printing the chr sheet to A4 without clipping the right side.

Once print is pressed, go to properties. Choose "Letter" in "Paper size", in the next tab click "Fit A4". This now prints the whole thing.

That I should have to do such a bizzare work round, and that no tech bod at DDI either fixes the real problem or even acknowledges it annoys me somewhat.

Good luck all. BTW there is a customer feedback questionaire button on the home page at present.

I'm using the same - Mac & Firefox - and can't get the workarounds to work. Have logged with Wizards customer service. It's definitely something that's changed recently - the original Web CB worked fine and I was able to print out plenty of character sheets normally.

Cheers

Mac A4-paper users: Change your system Print default page size to US Letter if you want to get anywhere with printing without chopping off all of your skill and ability scores.  I suggest printing to PDF and then change back to A4.

I needed to print a levelled-up char today and couldn't in time for our session.  I'm trying hard to use this new CB but it has so many bugs and the bugs seem to be changing their weird behaviour rather than being fixed.  A couple of weeks ago CB failed to load entirely when I upgraded Silverlight (I had to downgrade - not easy).  I still use an old sheet of ritual cards and stuff from the old CB since the new one doesn't print them.

Wizards should cut their losses, ditch this piece of junk and hire some decent web developers (not Microsoft developers) to start again.

I'm having the same problem as the OP - complete inability to print from the web-based CB. Even printing to PDF first doesn't help.

Printing problems: Always make sure you're printing in "letter" format as that is the default, and non-changeable format, for the builder.

I sometimes run into problems when trying to print directly off the builder, where the printer just eats paper and returns blank pages. Solution: Save as PDF first with the pdf printer settings set to "letter" format.

PDF huge size seems to stem from the fact the the entire builder character sheet output is just a humongous picture spanning many pages and will probably also explain the spooling size as well...

I use PDF Creator for my PDF's...

The worst part about all of this is the enormous memory leakage the builder seems to suffer from... a friend of mine is a microsoft programmer and works with silverlight almost on a daily basis and says the programming is rather sloppy... Silverlight can do great things, and if the programming is done right there should be little or no memory leakage...

Well, see, even if they read them I'm sure the issue is more complex than them saying, "Some random guy on the internet thinks we should hire a production team and some other random guy agrees! LETS DO IT!"

DrNick,

We are not talking about 2 random guys... We are talking about hundreds of paying subscribers with the same problem.  And me and a bunch of other "random guys" already tried the costumer service. They told me the issue is "known" ...

I'm not talking about the bug.

I'm talking about the suggestion to contract it out and the belief that it's just that simple. There are a lot of considerations that go into decisions like that.

This works!
Though I have to say, considering we are now in March 2011, this problem very much still exists!!
We have just gone through A LOT of paper and A LOT of ink trying to sort it out, wondering what on earth was going wrong!! WotC really need to try and solve this, the character builder is one of the biggest reasons why people pay for a subscription - I for one am one of those!
