#3 fjw70 Nov 09, 2009 14:19:39	Thanks. I went to the local AT&T store today to test drive an iPhone.  I came to these forums to see how it worked and it wasn't too bad.  I was able to read just fine.  I didn't try to post aything since I didn't want to log-in. I wasn't able to test out pdfs though.
#4 acantha Nov 09, 2009 15:51:15	i have, on occaison, downloaded a pdf, usually a D&DI article that was just released, but its not what i'd call an effective viewing platform. I'm hoping that some of the next gen ebook readers will get advanced enough to support pdfs natively, with good resizing and viewability.

One would imagine it would be the one aspect of DDI that would be most accessed by mobile devices, as a cell phone fires-up and connects to the internet alot faster than a laptop. And the former doesn't need wi-fi to connect in the event of an emergency rules discussion.
#6 Crodocile Nov 13, 2009 17:38:06	I haven't had much success with using the Compendium on my iphone.  It does kinda work, but too slowly to be really usable.  That's with the regular phone connection.  I don't think I've tried it with wi-fi, so that would probably work better.

And the former doesn't need wi-fi to connect in the event of an emergency rules discussion.  The compendium seems like it should work, but there are a lot of little bits that make it impossible to use on the iPhone. The lightbox method they use calculates the window width incorrectly, so your search results pop-up off-screen. The individual search results would render beautifully if they added   [meta name="viewport" content="width=590" /]    to them. Oh, and page titles. It's got a lot of potential, but it's a little sloppy. I've used my iPhone to read Dragon Articles and it works as well as a PDF will work. It's a little slow, and you have to scroll all over the place, but it does the trick. Surprisingly, the iPhone lacks a decent PDF viewer app (I've tried MANY, have yet to find a good one) to let you save the DDI articles and access them offline. I wouldn't like Wizards' DDI apps affect your iPhone purchase. Just submit bug reports to them, they're pretty good about fixing them.
#10 Cailte Dec 02, 2009 4:41:20	Two key sites to use with your iPhone: iplay4e.com - build a character, upload it, play. vsxp.com/scryer - a compendium searcher that currently allows you to search for items and monsters, but is being expanded. The compendium itself is not great on the iPhone but it does work. The biggest problem is that you cannot post to the forums, whatever code they are using to make the little box that you type your reply into simply doesn't work on the iPhone. If you do manage to get the area selected by some feat of luck you still cannot type in it. By using the QuickOffice Files app I've had success reading PDFs on the iPhone, but it is a long way from my prefered means of undertaking the task. Frankly your best bet is probably to look around and see if any of the telcos are offering a notepad deal. I was able to get a notepad with 2GB of wireless a month for the cost of the wireless - and it is far more flexible than my iPhone for my gaming needs. (I still use iPlay4E.com with it every time I play for example.)
#11 fjw70 Dec 29, 2009 10:49:00	I got an iPod Touch for Christmas and I must say that the PDF viewer GoodReader (a $0.99 app) is pretty good for reading PDFs like the D&D rulebooks and Dungeon and Dragon mags. When the pdf is resized to the width of one column it is very readable, even on the small screen. There is a lot of scanning up-and-down and right-to-left but it flows pretty easily so it isn't a big deal (to me).
