Character Builder

Demo version
- A new Demo version will be posted with all content up through Player’s Handbook® 2. For those who haven’t yet subscribed, you will be able to create characters from levels 1 to 3 using all Classes from both Player’s Handbook® 1 and Player’s Handbook® 2. If you have the previous Demo already installed, you will need to uninstall it and download the new version. There is no update process to update the old demo to the new demo.

Feature Changes
- The Summary export now provides calculated bonuses for skills.
- The Summary text can now be re-imported into the Character Builder, helping you exchange characters through forums – just copy from someone’s post, and Import from Clipboard on the Summary page
- The .dnd4e character save file now has a new section that is friendlier to third parties, since it does not need to reference the rules engine. This should help modders create their own display options by reading the XML output. We also have included links for each rules element to the related compendium entry.
- The application now supports Dual Implement spellcaster damage calculation with two implements wielded.

Character Sheet Viewer Changes
- You now have an option to “Show normal Items card”. This option will display each item in a single item card, as well as each mundane weapon with its basic attack and properties, and the note associated with each item printed on the card. Furthermore, magic weapons will also have the properties name of the weapon added in the property field.
- Fixed the power card duplication issues occurring when switching format from portrait to landscape.
- Familiar information can be added to the character sheet (go to Layout/Add Panel/Familiar)

Interface Changes
- Gear page UI and underlying code have been enhanced and column sorting has been added.
- Money is now captured in its own interface window. The application will not automatically transform your money into gp anymore, but a converter drop down box will offer that option.
- Large weapon check box display selection can now be found in the Preferences box.

Miscellaneous Fixes and Updates
- Sample characters will not get added after a new update anymore.
- Added missing PHB2 portrait picture in the sample portrait folder.

Where do we provide feedback for the compendium?

It's really nice to have the glossary available. Can you get it to "show all" so that the glossary can be scrolled through like an index?

Well there is the character builder feedback forums for general stuff, but for more direct measures there is the report a bug link on the main menu of the builder.

But I'm asking about the Compendium, not the builder.

You can use the same methods and forums. The people who need the feedback will get it as they are the same people for both products mostly.

hey, so I'm getting a repeatable system-lock whenever I try to install this update. First I tried updating automatically through the Character Builder Startup, and it froze my whole computer (mouse and everything). Then I tried uninstalling the old builder, redownloading the newest April 2009 version, and installing that. So far it's frozen my system at 99.7% and 80.4% completion. I'm running pretty high-end (not custom, though) computer with fully updated Vista. Any suggestions?

It seems strange that the updater would cause your computer to stop responding. Although it's possible it could be a problem with the updater, something that severe is most likely something environmental on your computer or a conflict with other software that is exercised by the solid state down loader.

There are a few things that you may want to try:

First is to ensure that you are running at a high enough permission level for the updater to work, ie as administrator or power user. The updater needs to be able to write to your registry.

Since it seems you are getting part way through the download before you have problems, the problem could be with your router if you have one. Although I know it is a bit of a pain, you could try updating with your computer connected directly to your modem. Some of the cheaper modems cause the packets of data to get clipped and the Solid State down loader seems to have some issues with that at times.

You could also try temporarily turning off any virus checkers while you run the update and see if that helps.

I hope some of these ideas can help. If you are unable to get the process working, our Customer Service have an exceptionally high success rate with assisting customers over the phone.

Is the new demo posted yet?

Seems to be... at least, I'm in the middle of downloading the new demo build, and the .exe file has a different name than the last one.

Hey thanks for the reply. For clarity, I've been using the Builder since the Beta Demo and updating every month. This is the first problem I've had. I'll contact Customer Service if turning off all my other software doesn't help. Since a clean reboot and run didn't work, I might try safemode or just disabling everything (including restarting my router). Although it probably isn't the router either since the lock occurs on installation, not download. Thanks again.
