| #1cart_sprinterMar 26, 2009 23:08:46 | Excerpts: Summoning Magic Arcane Power ![]() In today’s Arcane Power preview, we introduce new summoning magic for wizards! Wizards "Spells trip from my tongue and sizzle from my finger tips. Few can gainsay me. A lifetime of arcane study is my burden, but also my delight." The wizard embodies arcane magic to most people, and rightfully so. Of all who deal in the arcane, you truly understand the magical principles that underlie reality. Others might exploit its power, but only imperfectly. As a painter composes an image on a blank canvas or a sculptor reveals the form imprisoned in dull stone, you manipulate magic to create expressions of power. Your art, although beautiful, is also lethal. You are driven to constantly improve your craft, studying ever more intricate rituals, acquiring newer and more powerful implements, and developing even mightier spells. Discuss it here. |

Guess they actually designed him to just appear in an area and be a wall. The encounter power also leaves quite a bit to be desired. Guess teammates can force the mob more than 2-3 squares away... All in all, still very excited about the Summoner Wizard, but this really did nothing for me in terms of raising my expectations. |

Guess they actually designed him to just appear in an area and be a wall. the fire warrior physically blocks and OA's he can oa on the enemies move, then fly over a target and block/repeat the process the next round and so on. the wasp is something you zap a creature with that you do not want approching. it goes moves it gets zapped it moves farther gets zapped again. both spells are there to minimizes targets movement and punish those that move anyways. |
| #4DiscordianMar 27, 2009 4:31:15 | The wasp is very cool, and IMO a solid encounter power. It does okay damage and has an interesting control ability - it won't do much against a monster with a lot of hp, but a skirmisher or lurker could be in serious trouble. |
| #5The_JesterMar 27, 2009 10:32:54 | Wow... a preview that's 1/2 material that was already previewed AND is in a book that has been in stores for a week. And the remaining part of the preview is half powers and half average-quality illustration. So, really, a preview/excerpt that is 1/4 interesting content. |
| #6eleranMar 27, 2009 10:37:54 | Wow... a preview that's 1/2 material that was already previewed AND is in a book that has been in stores for a week. Arcane Power has been out for a week? Where do I get my copy? |
| #7morvannonMar 27, 2009 10:41:44 | Arcane Power has been out for a week? Where do I get my copy? I think he's talking about the "Summoning Rules" part, which is already in PH2. |
| #8eleranMar 27, 2009 10:45:59 | I think he's talking about the "Summoning Rules" part, which is already in PH2. Then I guess I apologize for the snark. I dont have the PH2 yet. |
| #9Janx_14Mar 27, 2009 10:51:27 | The summoning keyword has been out for a week. Funny that as soon as the invoker gets summoning, the wizard gets it better. |
| #10MockMar 27, 2009 14:53:53 | I would really like it if they didn't preview stuff they've already previewed. This is the third time that's happened; it's also something like the 3rd time the summoning rules have been previewed/excerpted. Getting mighty boring. |
| #11MyztekMar 27, 2009 16:17:59 | There is a SLIGHT difference in the summoning text previewwed compared to the text in the PHB II... they added a few words to the end of the defenses section...The summoned creature’s defenses equal yours when you summon it, not including any temporary bonuses or penalties TO YOUR STATISTICS. Not too much of a news item, but at least it shows they're being attentive to issues that arise and they're trying tio clarify them... |
| #12MyztekMar 27, 2009 17:30:50 | Comparing the daily summon power for Invokers and Wizards: Range: Wizard 10, Invoker 5 AC: Wizard's summon is +2, Invoker is +0. Standard Action: Wizard's summon attacks 1 target for d8 + attribute fire damage, Invoker's summon does a close burst 1 for d8 + attribute fire damage. Everything else is the same. The invoker's summon does a burst while the wizard's summon gets +2 AC and can start out 5 squares farther away. If you ask me, the minor AC boost and trivial extra range is no where as useful as getting to attack 7 additional squares... Invoker wins hands down. My dwarven wrath invoker is a lot of fun. The invoker concept opens up a lot of role playing doors. It also has a real potential to shine in massive battles... if I'd had an invoker instead of my paladin in a battle I did a few months ago, I could have done an attack that could have dealt about 2500 total damage (close burst 5, over 40 enemy targets, 2d8 + 16 + (1 / target) to each target) - 40 enemies for an average of ~63 damage before figuring in criticals |
