looking over some of them at the levels of play there the mounts level is equal to a characters or one level higher, they seem awesome. Especially if your more focused on theatrics. Looking at the lv 13 Nightmare I was giddy. I mean, it has hit points roughly on par with epic level wizard character. (I'll double check that in a moment.)

You can by barding equipment for a extra point or two of AC and the creature comes with nifty benefits if you have mounted combat feat and so on. Not to say that is a potentially decent looking ally in combat im guessing.

while im sure peoples dislike of them has something to do with their eventually lower defenses and attack bonuses it would seem like common place to at that point trade them in toward a better model. Is it possible for DM's to improve mounts using the guidelines in the DMG for improving monsters up to a certain point. I think it was something like 5 levels then you are told it would be better to make a new monster? that sounds like it could apply here, improve lets say the Nightmare to lv 18 and then tell the player that the creature has become as strong as it ever will and that he should look for a more suitable mount in the near future?

Perhaps. But this is in the wrong section. Try posting it in "Whats a DM to do"
