Are we stuck with this mess until next month?

It's no secret that this recent update has screwed the character build up. Armor proficiencies are bugged, power cards don't show calculations, etc.

I wasn't able to find an announcement about it, but are they planning any sort of hotfix in the near future? I use CB to print out character sheets for numerous campaigns, and these continuing issues have become very irritating.

I second this question. There are some pretty bad bugs, and it's soured both of my two D&D campaigns these past two weekends. I've always been an advocate for the Character Builder, and this is embarrassing.

The weapon issue on the power cards is certainly the #1, but I also got some flak for the class-bonuses to defenses being in the miscelanious column instead of the class column.

So far, they seem intent on keeping with the "one update per month" mindset. They've had other updates which screwed things up and those things went unfixed until the next update. So, yeah ... since June has five Tuesdays, we're stuck with this for five weeks.

Way to go, WotC.

A comment from mdonais seems to confirm this - issues pertaining to weapon have been fixed for next month's update, so I expect nothing will get fixed until then. They probably aren't going to bother with the hybrid stuff (the most annoying stuff!) because next month, the hybrid rules in the CB will have to be entirely revamped anyway.

I hope that this isn't the case. It's con season now, and I was planning on printing my characters out for use at Origins at the ed of the month. Had I only know, I would have printed my sheets before the update...

I will ask about it.

mdonais, The bugs here make the builder harder to use than the original beta, in my opinion. It probably would have beneficial to have delayed the release of this update (again). The majority of users don't understand what goes into programming projects and, as a result, tend to be more forgiving when the developer is more forthcoming with information about the development of a product.

I've seen a number of posts where users seem to feel that they have not received what has been advertised. No one can deny that DDI was extremely hyped and that WoTC said they would be bringing a lot to the digital realm. However, with releases like this WoTC is disheartening more of their long-term customers, driving away those who spend the money to examine the product, and just amplifying everyone's fear that the unreleased products will come out just after Duke Nukem Forever.

We were promised a lot and unless the programmers stop operating on the more incapacitated side of the Ballmer Peak, I am convinced that many will just pass by on DDI.

i do hope they patch it again ... DMing 2x a week and having to tweak everyones chars ... plus manually fix stuff can get to be a headache and take away from the encounter planning time ...

Thanks for checking that for us. I think the worst part about it is that I would estimate the majority of DDI subscribers are those who play D&D once a week, if not more, and have more need of it than the more casual users who level once a month. Thus the inability to use a reliable program we pay for is made even more frustrating.

Be sure to let us know as soon as you have any info!

Any news on this yet? I have two games scheduled before the next update, and one of them is with new players. Would sure be nice to show how easy it is without having to explain the errors. >_<

i would be interested in an update as well .... have a group of 3.5ers i am trying to convert to 4ed ... right now one of them is doing the typical jokes about 'they just keep screwing stuff up' .. because he came over to work on his char some and i had to do the manual fixes.

What exactly is the problem? I don't see anything wrong on my character sheet...

Couple things - there's weirdness with the weapon display on power cards (it's not displaying sometimes, though it should). There's a fix for it (mostly) - or rather, a workaround - but it's a bit annoying.

Another problem is that hybrid characters, it appears, cannot select any armor or shield proficiency feats ("cannot" as in, "it doesn't work") even if they would qualify for the feat. We know that hybrids have limited armor proficiency, but the CB won't acknowledge the selection of an armor proficiency feat for hybrids.

I think there's also a bug with certain builds where you are actually unable to complete a level 30 character (edge case, I know) because it does power replacement out of order. I'm not positive that's a bug or just user error, but it's...awkward.

I've also seen some people suggest that defenses are not always calculating correctly. I've noticed that for some reason defense bonuses from class have been moved OUT of the class column into the second miscelanious column. Strageness like this makes it difficult to figure out how the math is working.

It's well worth noting that it was announced today the the RPGA event "Ultimate Dungeon Delve" requires the use of characters made with and printed from the DDi Character Builder.

This Ultimate Dungeon Delve event premiers at Origins Game Faire in two weeks.

While I don't know how widespread these bugs and calculations are - it would be VERY beneficial to the RPGA as a whole if these characters could be assumed to be as correct as possible.

There are prizes on the line for groups that manage to survive the delve, so the accuracy of the Character Builder, as a required element, is of a somewhat elevated importance this month.

Ah, then it is crucial that at least the hybrid character's armor proficiency bug be fixed prior to that...or any hybrids made will be confined to the lowest armor proficiency they possess at inception (meaning they'd be technically correct, but nobody could create a hybrid that has any additional armor proficiencies). That would be a bummer.

Although - are hybrids RPGA legal anyway? Because that seems to be the most glaring and obvious bug.

Hybrids are not currently RPGA legal.

So if that's the source of most errors and bugs, it won't be that much a concern for us I suppose. In reading this thread it sounded like there are far more widespread issues.

I don't know if it's the source of most bugs (doesn't seem to be) but it's the source of the worst one I've come across personally.

the weapon issues for the power cards is not hybrid only ... i have made new fighters, clerics, warlocks and others and it is on all of their cards (and on the attack table on the main sheet, only shows unarmed .. not calculating in any equipped weapons) ...

for the other stats they seem to calculate okay ... but i have noticed a time or two that some of the +attacks are not always added in correctly ...

Guys,

If you right-click on the power cards, you can select what attack you want it to calculate for you, and it will display it on the card.

If the policy is going to be "one update a month, bugs or no bugs", then can we at least have a button for "roll back to previous version"?

Yeah, I want the old one back.

It dropped my character stats to 0 and I can't remember what they originally were. It also hosed up my power cards completely.

This is a mess.

We played yesterday and my players universally complained and said they'd rather use manual sheets. I really want to use these sheets as it makes my book keeping and levelling up so much easier but year, the bugs in this update are a bit embarassing, especially losing all the weapon info on the power cards.

Meh, I've never trusted character generators, regardless of the game system or who programmed them. For me, the CB is just a character manager and tweaking program. I'd never use the character sheet it generates. Its a horrendous mess of numbers and calculations, I always copy the important details by hand to a different sheet.

It's entirely unacceptable to fully release an update with such horrendous bugs in it. The customer is paying a monthly fee, and every time a broken update comes out, more customers are going to cancel their subscription.

Rollback option would be nice, but I doubt they will have another update.

Since the character builder is restricted to no more than 5 updates a month, they would have to remove this restriction as well. Otherwise some people wouldn't be able to update because they might have already used all 5. (I personally use 4, PC, laptop, work PC, jump drive). So to put an additional patch in, they'd have to patch this as well... Little to say by the time everything is patched and fixed that needs to be in order to get them this month, it will be nearly time for the next update anyways.

This is a whole lot of awesomeness. It was weird, though. It would not show attacks for my flaming battleaxe +1, but it would for my normal battle axe. And I chose the option at the top of the page to display all weapons.

But, the fix you posted here worked, so that's good enough for me.

note.
was fiddling around with this issue seeing if theres anything that can be done until they issue a "fix" for it.
if you go to the character sheet in the builder and right click each individual power card and click customize you can manually choose each and all weapons you want displayed.
kind of annoying to have to do each one but at least this way they show.

Some issues you can fix by clicking on the option to set the character sheet to the default portrait or landscape display. That fixed my "No basic attacks" and "no weapons on power cards" issues.

There are still a lot of problems with this update however;

firstly of the ones I've found is one where I cannot save characters... no actually the problem is taht when I save them they don't save, they are not there on the list and so there are big problems with that.

Secondly Vestige Mastery doesn't work. At all. Nada. Nothing. Not even a slide down box. And if you try to houserule it, what does it do? crashes.

Lastly when you build a character up to level 30 it does not allow you to selsect some powers so the character is not LEGAL.

Please let these be fixed by the next update, otherwise I'm going to complain. Wait... I already am. Damnit. I'll complain by E-MAIL.

Wizards,

We know software development is a weak spot for you, but if you're going to release features that BREAK something we're paying for, maybe consider a rollback option.

-OR-

Not charging everyone this month?

Thanks!
