| #1rob_douglasOct 03, 2009 23:32:26 | I was hoping to see an artifact introduced in SoW, as part of the ongoing plot - maybe one that can survive through Heroic or paragon tier to epic. But I haven't seen anything like that. That got me thinking - can I put one in? I like the effect of having an artifact on the feel of the game - that this is more special than all the other adventuring groups. My party is 7th level now, just finishing up Lost Mines. Right now I have a set of Dwarven Layered Plate armor waiting for the dwarf in the Queen's chamber, but I was thinking of replacing it with the Invulnerable Coat of Arnd? Any reason this would be a particularly bad idea? Would it mess up the arc in any way? If not, I should plan a great time for the Coat to leave as well, perhaps when Sarshan is finally defeated... Any other ideas for Artifacts? I could also develop one myself. I might look over the old classic artifacts and choose one. The Axe of the Dwarvish Lords is out right now - being Epic, and because I included it in my campaign history that it was used not too long ago - not to bring it in again, but to specifically exclude it from the campaign. Thoughts? ROB

If you come up with a cool story line to go with it I think your idea would be really fun for your players. I would be careful however of adding more than one artifact in any one particular tier. I myself am converting the Wicked Fang into an artifact... it just seems like it should be one to me.
edit note:
imo ...the Coat of Arnd I believe is a heroic tier artifact, so if you are to introduce it you should do it soon. |

So, if you think the Coat has a place in the campaign, sure, put it in! There are a couple of artifacts that do occur in the campaign. One, the Seed of Winter is with the PCs for only a minor time as its more of a bargining chip in Throne of the Stone-Skinned King. The other that was just recently introduced is the Sword of Kas (very old school artifact!). Not sure just what might be planned with it other than a key to the next adventure, but it is tied very closely with the story. But so far those are the only ones written into the campaign. Any others would be put there as part of the treasure placement. |

And it will leave sometime after the next adventure, when they save Overlook from the Githyanki, but it will be great for those couple of adventures! The Sword of Kas could be usable by one of my PCs...We shall see. It's not the right "kind" of sword for him. He's focusing on a Jagged Broadsword right now... Might look into some others, since there aren't any in the campaign. I can use ones that work for my PCs. ROB |

Since I am away from my books and artifacts are notoriously difficult to search for in the compendium, I don't have any suggestions other than Blood of Io, which is an epic-level consumable artifact. Assuming you could find a suitable artifact and re-flavor it for the Platinum Dragon, it could later be used as a way to drive home some of the significant plot events and encourage them to fix it. If they use the artifact as a primary piece of their equipment, though it might seem a little heavy-handed to your players, but emphasizing to your group that artifacts are whimsical and tend to come and go would mitigate some of that. It could even be that the artifact itself is more of a symbol of the deity's favor given by Amyria for the PC's efforts, and confers a minor bonus to all party members within range of the PC carrying it. It shouldn't be so powerful that the party is crippled without it, but it should be good enough that they'd notice its absence after they were used to it. Anyway, that's more of a story idea than a suggestion for an artifact to use, but I hope it helps anyway! |
