Astral Fire not stacking with Weapon Focus

Jul 06, 2009 10:06:45 Ok, I have a hybrid fighter/wizard who has Correlon's implement so he can use his +4 defensive longsword as an implement. So he has both the Astral fire feat (+2 at 11th level for fire spells) and weapon focus heavy blades which gives a similar +2 bonus to all spells according to the character builder, but the two don't seem to stack.

I would expect a +4 enhancement to fireball and a +2 to magic missile but when I have only astral fire, I get +2 to fireball and +0 to magic missile (good). When I have only Weapon focus I get +2 for both (also good). When I have both feats I have only the +2 to both spells, not a +4 to the fireball spell.

Do they not stack? Do I need to substitute some other feat for astral fire since it does me no good? Or is that a bug and should I manually correct the damage for my fire spells? Thanks.

Jul 06, 2009 10:51:09 Astral Fire and Weapon Focus both grant feat bonuses, and bonuses of the same type (unless they are untyped) generally don't stack; as such, there is indeed little point for you to hang on to Astral Fire. Cf. PHB1 p275 for details.

Thanks, I'll look that up as soon as I get home. When something weird happens with the CB it's hard to know if it's intended to work that way or if it's a bug. I don't want to just assume it's a bug without investigating it, and there is a LOT of material to study. I know for example that the inability to select armor proficiencies for my hybrid fighter/wizard is a bug, but only because I know what the rules say. Thanks again.

Jul 07, 2009 8:43:25 You know...you can read the full text of the feats when you are building your character..so if the numbers don't add up right from what you think the easiest thing first is to check what the two feats do and see if they are the same bonuses.
