Feb 03, 2009 16:50:12 I love DDI. I use the compendium throughout my games and the encounter and character builder all the time. The only problem is the automatic sign out. I'll be looking something up in the compendium and go back to it half an encounter later to get the login prompt. Either the automatic sign out should be lengthened or be able to be set from the account page. It might be just an annoyance but it's a pretty big one.

Feb 03, 2009 17:06:40 Yeah, this is a common complaint. However, WotC has stated why they want it this way. So the best you can hope for is a workaround. Setup the browser to auto-refresh every few minutes, get an autologin tool (firefox?), etc.

Otherwise, you just have to manually sign in if the timeout period passes.

Its my personal pet peeve as well, so anytime he isn't on their case, I am. Keep on letting them know that its an issue that you want fixed.

This complaint has been out there for at least that length of time.

The actually coding might be a few minutes, if subroutine is used by all displaying pages, however more likely a few days , due to the fact with inexpensive memory there has been a reduced use of subroutine and coding flags for it.

A single subroutine only requires changing 30 to a higher value (inferring minutes is used, seconds or hours or other could have been used in the coding), a search and replace should be able to do that with accept change.

Coding should not be an issue, policy clearly appears to be the issue.

The server load defense tends to fail as the short logged in, tends to add to server load rather then reduce it. Within the last few months a few have provided tips on how to stay logged in as soon as one minute. This clearly will add to server load should any use the idea.

I still advise a minimum of 4 hours before recognition is dropped, this will expand the number of users online however will not consume bandwidth by maintaining a file (cookies lasting 30 minutes are rare,. many now last for years) of that size.

Some want a day or a week, what ever it might be changed tp it is a Policy might be changed to it is not a major coding issue (or should not be).

Change the Policy by even 10 minutes and there will be fewer upset, not many I would guess. The longer logged in lasts the fewer will have concerns or complaints.

Is this a bug, or a limitation?

From what I gathered, I thought they were blaming it on server load. Which means log-in time is intentional.

Of course, having to log-in several times before it "takes" is most definitely a bug. I have to log-in twice to D&D Insider every time I try to log in.

It is not a "bug" to me but a serious usability issue which should be just as important. This issue affects me so much that I dread using the Bonus Tools or Compendium if I just want to do or look up one little thing. I have to "batch" all of my research/work into a single, extended session which actively discourages casual use.
