my group decided to try climbing the bluff and find a way into karak mines without using the obvious death trap at the front gates (lowest perception in my group is +8)

when they thought of this and examined it they of course noticed the flying creatures and decided to risk the front gate after all, one long hazardous fight later and they're inside.

at this point they looked into the open courtyard and noticed that it is open from above and have since decided not to go that way and i've noticed that there is no real need to go through that area at all during the adventure.

so what to do? if they don't go through they'll miss out on an item, i put a decent one in there too, as well as some xp although not much.

at present i'm thinking of just adding that item to the final encounter and not worrying about the xp shortage, any ideas?

Personally I wouldn't worry about the item, or possibly give it to them later as you suggested.

Yeah, just move the item and perhaps add a "random" encounter elsewhere to make up the xp difference. Like, perhaps one of the death squads catch up to them in the next adventure... maybe between Overlook and Brindol. Which might actually work out better because unless the party doesn't do well on the Skill Challenge in the beginning of Den of the Destroyer, they really don't encounter any of the supposed death squads that are out there hunting the party and other adventurers.

My group did go up the cliffs and encountered the harpies that had a tug of war between them in regards to some of the party :P And then the sorcerer got lured into stepping into the hole... and failed her save to not be pulled into hazardous terrain (i.e. the 50 foot drop). So that left her alone with the carrion crawler after falling 50 feet away from the party... Very bad situation, but the monk leaped in after her, took very little falling damage (Safewing amulet and good acrobatics) and kept her safe.
