Bad math on leveling hit points? Elites and Solos odd too?

New math? Is this something that we will understand once DMG2 comes out?

Load a Stormclaw Scorpion Level 1 Soldier in to the editor. It has 32 hit points and CON 12. If I increase it to Level 2. It has 42 hit points and CON 13. According to DMG it should only get 8 extra hit points. As I mentioned in another thread, Monster Builder is increasing all of its stats by 1 when it goes up to Level 2. So if the ability score increase is correct then the it should get 9 extra hit points, not the 10 it's getting. (Unless there's something else I won't find out about until DMG2 arrives.)

Now if I increase the Stormclaw Scorpion to Level 3, it has 51 hit points---9 additional from Level 2. I am just not grasping where that is coming from. The ability scores remained the same, it should be just an extra 8 hit points. An extra couple of hit points is not a big deal but it gets compounded when you go to Elite or Solo.

Keep the Stormclase Scorpion at Level 3 and make it Elite. It has 103 hit points. Shouldn't that be 102? Double 51. Though by DMG rules it should have 96 hit points.

Now switch it to Solo. It has 206 hit points. That's double 103. DMG says that solos have hit points equal to 8 times Level +1 plus CON score. Then take that number and multiply by 4. So my math says that it should have 176 hit points. ( 8 x 4 = 32 + 12 = 44 x 4 = 176 ) 30 hit points is a big difference between DMG and what Monster Builder is spitting out.

Some of the errors seem like rounding errors in the program. Going from 51 hit points to 103 is just strange. Or maybe it's a math error due to me running Windows XP in Parallels Desktop under Mac OS X. I just don't know. I should really check this against a Brute or Lurker Solo. See if it is using the DMG rules of 8 as the base hit points or if it is going with 10 for Brute and 6 for Lurker.

old math really...

it could easily be a decmil point thing here, remember anywhere not in D&D math works with if it is .5 or more it goes to the next highest, andlower goes tothe one befero....so if it is 51.3 rounded to 51, then bouble is 102.6 rounded to 103.

I just checked the Cavern Choker Level 4 Lurker, 42 HP, CON 12. Make it Elite, 84 HP, CON 12. Make it Solo, 208 HP, CON 12. The math there is all good. The Solo hit points are based on 8 like DMG says and not on 6 that a Lurker has.

I even leveled the Cavern Choker up to 6. 55 HP, CON 13. (Extra 1 hit point from the CON increase.) Make it Elite, 110 HP, CON 13. Make it Solo, 276 HP, CON 13. That math is good too.

So now I'm REALLY confused. Is it a bug with Soldiers that caused the strange hit points on the Stormclaw Scorpion?

I'm only guessing, but I believe they may have made some changes on the way they calculate some of the stats. If you go and check the article regarding the fight between Orcus and Demogorgon, they noted that they may have made some changes to the way the handle statistics for Solo monsters. Perhaps they have made some other adjustments for balance purposes.

note - I am going odd memory here, so I may be totally wrong, or just an idiot.

Yes actually, somewhere it was stated that the MB math is based on DMG2 rules.
