According to D&D insider #8 the barbarian will be among the last of the free articles for everyone, so expect it between the beginning to the middle of october (not sure when the charging will begin so those are my best estimates). My guess is early october. So within 2 weeks probably, 3 at the most. This has renewed a bit of faith in this for me. Gives me more incentive now with a little renewed trust to think about a subscription. |
| #2Drax_HoakSep 24, 2008 23:19:13 | This is definitely great news; WotC is making good on this one. |
| #3poder_miservelSep 25, 2008 13:20:15 | any info about the class? my hope: striker - powers focused on 2handed weapons - big damage increase while bloodied (RAAAAAAAGEEEE!) - great mobility - biggest hp pool? - some brutal and reckless and attack powers(sacrificing defense for more offense). - maybe encounraging players to destroy not only enemies but the objects and scenario as well. - low armor proficiency, maybe have his skin as strong as cloth or leather(like a natural armor) |
| #4skalgrimmSep 25, 2008 15:32:52 | any info about the class? I'm hoping that we don't have a striker with more damage than Ranger or Rogue, with more mobility than ranger or rogue, with a hit point pool larger than the fighter or paladin too. If they perhaps come up with some way to trade defense/hit points/healing surges for more damage, or more attacks, that would be great, so that, like the paladin, he had lots of healing surges, but many uses for them other than healing, I think it would be interesting. However, that all sounds more like a martial class than a primal class. Since we haven't seen anything from the primal power source, I'm hopeful it might be quite different, perhaps using more "totem animal" powers, or "rage buffs", or whatever. My biggest fear came from the original barbarians (back with the original Unearthed Arcana), where they were basically fighters but better. I'm really hoping to see them slide into a place I hadn't seen before (like great weapon strikers...that would be nice), or even a place I hadn't even expected. |

| #6Fox_ReeveheartSep 25, 2008 15:47:50 | Hmmm, went on to read that it will be one of the first published articles of the month too. =) So perhaps 1 week into october. |
| #7mrmythSep 25, 2008 16:59:27 | My warlock is hoping for some con-based melee attack powers, but I expect that is something of a long shot. Definitely interested in this article, either way. ![]() |

Definitely interested in this article, either way. So your Warlock is planning on becomming a Barbarian? I would expect the article to be about being a Barbarian. Like Tribe Traditions, Survival Techniques, Customs and Rituals, Tribes, Tribal Structures, class specific weapons, armour ect.ect.. Interesting how people are looking to rip off Barbarian Class features into exsisting classes |
| #9KentinalSep 25, 2008 18:52:52 | Interesting how poeple are looking to rip off Barbarian Class features into exsisting classes Yes another reason I object to that being called a class, the multi classing rules. |
| #10The_JesterSep 27, 2008 12:15:51 | I'm glad they're slipping this through. Still doesn't help the RPGA or LFR players who have to wait for it to be compiled in Dragon before it can be used. It's unfortunate as the RPGA and organized play is a nice control for how a class performs in idealized situations. |
| #11josephkellSep 28, 2008 1:39:08 | My fear for the Barbarians is that they will be a Defender class that attacks with Constitution. I am not saying it makes sense, in fact, just the opposite, I think it would be ridiculously broken (hp, surges, and attack/damage stat is any powergamer's wet dream). Yeah we have Warlocks doing that, but this would be different. |
| #12subtleOct 01, 2008 1:54:36 | I expect them to be Con Primary with a secondary focus in strength or dexterity. I expect them to be defenders, with their rage mechanic tied to their mark. If you hit their friends, they get ****** off. I expect a Bezerker Presteige Class that trades defensive power for some minor striker damage. AND I EXPECT THEM FRIDAY, WIZARDS! |
| #13That_Blasted_SomoflangeOct 01, 2008 6:17:37 | I expect them to be Con Primary with a secondary focus in strength or dexterity. Well too bad, you aren't getting them Friday. They're supposed to be up on the 6th according to THIS. |
| #14Fox_ReeveheartOct 01, 2008 10:17:27 | I think they will be strikers and we have people saying they asked some of the devs at the cons and got confirmation (though you don't know the validity of these claims.) If they ARE defenders.... well... hmmmm... striker or defender it will be a strength primary.... I see con becoming secondary.. possibly wisdom or charisma too depending on what kind of different builds will be available. I see everything EXCEPT intelligence, this will be your dump stat regardless ![]() If they are defender (which i doubt) they will need something to give them extra AC because they will be lightly armored defenders just like the swordmage because i'm pretty DARN sure they will get up to hide proficiency and that will be it. |
| #15Tharag_BoccOct 02, 2008 5:18:15 | I'm still hoping for an ability that lets them use CON instead of DEX/INT for AC (in light/no armor of course). All the flavor of damage reduction with none of the mechanical baggage. Also if their attacks all/mostly key off of STR it would help give the iconic barbarians a good reason to double up on STR+CON. |

If it comes to shrugging off damage, wouldn't temporary hit points be a better fit or is that too much mechanical baggage as well? It would be interesting as a defender if they focused on giving themselves temporary hit points instead of having a higher armour class, though I still expect them to be a striker. |

True, and now that were post play-test it has indeed be revealed that the Barbarian does exactly that. My main reason for the Constitution AC was to both give the Barbarian a reason to double up on both Strength and Constitution and (after becoming convinced that the Barbarian was to be a striker) to give the barbarian more reason to boost Constitution to off-set striker HP. Which as it turns out is unnecessary, as HP is apparently not dependent on role. |
| #18john_paul_stoddardOct 06, 2008 22:30:52 | Well Well They Surprised me...its up and free |
