Barbarian Thaneborn Hypothetical Thread

Oct 07, 2008 18:03:20 So, does anybody have any idea what the Thaneborn will actually be?

I think it may be an homage to Mel Gibson's William Wallace, as seen in Braveheart. That would allow for a build that focused on Charisma and Intimidation as opposed to Strength based brutality. The only sticking point I see is potential similarity to the Warlord class, but, then again, the Barbarian we've come to know and love is similar to the fighter in many ways. Perhaps Thaneborn will use rages as the avenue for buffs while dealing out damage.

Any ideas you might have for powers and such...This be the spot!:D

Oct 07, 2008 18:33:42 Judging purely from the name, I'd say that there will be a bit of a Leader aspect to it. If I had to guess, I'd say that it's going to be flavored around ancestor worship, with rages and other powers that have a semi-divine feel.

This would be an interesting concept. I would love to see it too... the Cha aspect for the Thaneborn is what i am interested in.. i am wondering if it will be an intimidation type of thing or something else. Either way though, i am really looking forward to the PHB II (for a few reasons now)

Oct 07, 2008 19:11:37 Dragonborn Thaneborn Barbies will be a beautiful thing. i hope there's a feat to allow barbarians to take a minor action after charging or something to allow them to do something after charging. I'm just so excited about the whole class.

The one from the original Robert E. Howard stories, not the silly Schwartzenegger movie version.

From the preview article, thaneborn are "living examples of the power of one's will to shape one's fate." This is the sort of barbarian that could, after decades as an explorer, mercenary, thief and adventurer, take the throne of a mighty kingdom and command its armies in battle as if born to it. This is the sort of barbarian that could stare down the evil archmage, shrug off his ensorcellments and stick a two-handed sword through his ribcage (probably while stealing his girlfriend).

Oct 08, 2008 7:19:18 Rageblood is Striker\Defender, and Thaneborn is probably going to be Striker\Leader, so i'd expect to see a Barbarian that deals out a fair chunk of damage with Charisma based powers and uses his battle crys and ability to channel Primal Spirits to both grant himself great power in battle and empower his allies as well. Things like your Rage granting your allies bonuses as well as yourself.

Still primarily damage focused, but able to improve allied attacks and defences as well. Probably no healing though.

Oct 08, 2008 16:09:21 I'm thinking there won't be pure healing but give out temp HP to his allies as well as himself with his rage. He'll probably have attacks that give penalty to defenses. Its strikery since it debuffs and leadery since it helps allies.

That's sort of what I was thinking, imagining the rousing speech or blood-curdling cry that spurs allies on to priorly inconceivable savagery.

I'm reminded of the speeches given in Braveheart, and how battles might have been different if Wallace was not on the front line.

Have you actually read any old Conan stories? Or, you know, contemplated the fact that Conan ends up being a KING? I think this pretty much sums of Conan...

Of course, Conan is the iconic barbarian, so he pretty much fits as either rageblood or thaneborn. But, I have to say, I still feel he is slightly more in the thaneborn camp myself.
