| #1simaraOct 14, 2010 14:11:53 | It seems that my char builder is not calculating AC correctly. It has the October Update My AC Shows as 28 but my calculations give me: 10+ hal level (4) = 14 Scale Armor + 3 = 10 Heavy Shield = 2 Dex (+1) = 1 Total = 27 or am I doing the math wrong? ====== Created Using Wizards of the Coast D&D Character Builder ====== Jaisun Stathan, level 9 Human, Fighter Fighter: Combat Superiority Fighter Talents: One-handed Weapon Talent Human Power Selection: Bonus At-Will Power Background: Dragon Coast FINAL ABILITY SCORES Str 22, Con 15, Dex 13, Int 8, Wis 10, Cha 10. | #2sallaOct 14, 2010 17:55:01 | You're wearing Heavy Armor, so you don't add your DEX or INT modifiers into the calculation. With a +3 enhancement bonus, your armor should be some kind of masterwork, perhaps that didn't translate for some reason? |
| #3Kaviyd3Oct 15, 2010 15:24:30 | Maybe they are now using the armor rules from Heroes of the Fallen Lands? I recall that they boosted the AC bonuses of higher level magic armors without requiring specific masterwork types. |
| #4ReasonForTreasonOct 16, 2010 6:11:35 | I was just about to start a similar Thread; here's the problem: We are looking at Janus ir'Wynarn, a Level 7 Fighter. He was started as a Level 5 Fighter and now looks like this: ====== Created Using Wizards of the Coast D&D Character Builder ====== Janus ir'Wynarn, level 7 Human, Fighter Build: Guardian Fighter Fighter: Combat Agility Fighter Talents: One-handed Weapon Talent Human Power Selection: Bonus At-Will Power Background: Commissioned Officer, Mournland (Cyre), Scion of an Ancient Bloodline, Recent Life - Fighting Undead, Parentage - Noble, Refugee (Eberron Player's Guide) (+2 to Intimidate) FINAL ABILITY SCORES Str 20, Con 14, Dex 15, Int 10, Wis 10, Cha 8. I've edited the adventure equip out: Imposter's Drakescale Armor +2, Heavy Shield, Couters of Second Chances (heroic tier), Helm of Vigilant Awareness (heroic tier), Master's Blade Longsword +1, Goblin Stompers (heroic tier) ====== Copy to Clipboard and Press the Import Button on the Summary Tab ====== Let's look at the basics first: - Janus' basic AC is 13 = (10+1/2Lvl) We add the Imposter's Drakescale Armor AC Bonus of +8 - 13+8 = 21 Now we add the enhancement bonus of +2 - 13+8+2 = 23 Now we equip Sword and Shield, the latter is a basic Heavy Shield +2 - 13+8+2+2 = 25 So far, so good. Now that we have Sword, Shield and magic items equipped. Yet, when I check the AC listing under Defences, this is what I get: Score Defence 10+1/2Lvl Armor/Abil Class Feat Enh Misc Misc 25 AC 13 8 2 4 (??) -2 (??) Now, is this just some necessary formular the CB goes through? Why do I get a +4 Bonus and a -2 reduction? |
| #5ReasonForTreasonOct 16, 2010 6:24:50 | And in response to Simara: Your Magic Scalemail +3 is just regular old Scalemail, right? It seems like the CB updated the Scalemail to Drakescale Armor automatically so the basic AC is 8, which results in a total Bonus of +11. |
| #6UndrhilOct 16, 2010 12:17:35 | And in response to Simara: I think it updated to Wyvernscale, not Drakescale. Wyvernscale is the +3 masterwork for Scale armor. Also, with just a +11 bonus, the total would still be 27, since you aren't adding in the DEX bonus. With a bonus of +12, the total is 28. |
| #7ReasonForTreasonOct 16, 2010 18:03:02 | What Mr. Undrhill said :-) |
| #8unrealomegaOct 18, 2010 21:38:56 | For me, the character builder isn't calculating AC correctly. I have a level 21 character, and I've put Plate Armor on him(Without any other items on him) as a control. His AC is 28(20 + 8) When I put Meliorating Plate Amor +4 on him, it gives me 35 AC(20 + 11(Under armor/abil) + 4(ENH)). It's adding an extra 3 to armor/abil. Now, I put on Meliorating Specter Plate Armor +4, it gives me 34 AC(20 + 10(armor/abil) + 4(ENH)). So it seems to be giving me the correct AC, and it's stating I have resist 2 all. This is the same result with all other specialty armor. Then I tried it with Magic Plate armor, and it doesn't seem to break either I then put a heavy shield on without an armor, I get 23(20 + 1(Under armor/abil, my DEX mod is 1) + 4(misc) + -2(misc)). The number is coming out correctly, but for some reason, they gave me +4 for a normal heavy shield, then to offset the extra 2 they deducted it from the extra misc. Shield Mastery is actually putting the correct shield bonus in Fortitude, though. Sort of silly if you ask me. So, it appears Shields(Though mathematically fine) and Uncommon magical Plate armor are bugged. |
| #9barcoOct 19, 2010 18:36:00 | We noticed the same problem this evening. Paladin upgraded his armor from +1 to +2 and his AC went up by 2. Nothing special, just magic plate armor. To test this i just build a level 1 human paladin. ability scores all 10. No equipment: AC 10 Normal plate armor: AC 18 Magic plate armor +1: AC 19 Magic plate armor +2: AC 21 Magic plate armor +3: AC 23 Same thing happens with chain and scale armor but it doesn't for hide and leather. I'll try to test this on a Character Builder without the latest update. My old laptop probably has an older version installed. --UPDATE-- No problems on the older version of character builder (probably updated till august). |
| #10entr0picOct 21, 2010 14:26:21 | It appears to be happening for some cloth as well. My +4 cloth armor suddenly has an inherent 1 AC armor bonus. |
| #11dybrarhOct 21, 2010 15:26:49 | It appears to be happening for some cloth as well. My +4 cloth armor suddenly has an inherent 1 AC armor bonus. If it's feyweave cloth, it is actually meant to provide an inherent +1 bonus to AC. If it's mindweave armour though, yeah, that'd be a bug. |
| #12entr0picOct 21, 2010 15:33:57 | Nope, normal cloth armor. Before the latest patch it gave no Armor bonus. Now it's giving a +1. If it changed it to feyweave that change isn't actually reflected anywhere. I'm not seeing it listed in either the shop or on my char sheet as feyweave. My group saw similar problems with Scale armor, but not chain or leather. Given that, our DM ruled we stuck with the old numbers until WotC clarifies if this is a new rule or simply a bug in the program. |
| #13mjspawnOct 22, 2010 14:33:03 | The issue I am getting is that when I add heavy shield I am getting a -2 to AC/Ref instead of +2 for a paladin at level 11. |
| #14theoucrewOct 23, 2010 1:55:29 | I am seeing the exact same thing, and I agree that is is automatically making heavy armors into their masterwork versions. I don't mind if this is an official errata, but I wish they would tell us. |
| www.wizards.com/dndinsider/compendium/it...ltdrakOct 25, 2010 1:07:13 | If it was really masterwork armor, wouldn't clicking on it in 'shop' mode reveal that. It just tells me: However, in the XML file of the character, I see these lines:[Stat value="27" ] [alias name="AC" /] [alias name="Armor Class" /] [statadd Level="1" value="10" charelem="1e3d5460" /] [statadd Level="1" value="1" statlink="HALF-LEVEL" charelem="1e3d5460" /] [statadd type="Ability" Level="1" not-wearing="armor:heavy" value="1" statlink="Dexterity" abilmod="true" charelem="1e3d5460" /] [statadd type="Ability" Level="1" not-wearing="armor:heavy" value="1" statlink="Intelligence" abilmod="true" charelem="1e3d5460" /] [statadd type="Defensive" Level="1" wearing="DEFENSIVE:" value="1" charelem="1e3d5460" /] [statadd type="Armor" Level="8" value="9" charelem="1e3d9830" /] [statadd type="Enhancement" Level="8" value="2" charelem="1e3d7260" /] [statadd type="Shield" Level="8" requires="Shield Proficiency (Heavy)" value="1" statlink="Heavy Shield Defense Bonus" charelem="1e3d7530" /] [/Stat] The line in red seems to be the one where the extra AC has been added. | #16richgreen01Nov 21, 2010 3:02:24 | We noticed the same problem this evening. I didn't realise this was happening on the old non web-based character builder too! I imported my 7th level paladin equipped with +2 death's brink plate armour (no shield) into the new CB and her AC went up from AC 23 (old CB file) to AC 24. The character has this armour plus 10 Dex, 11 Int so AC should be 23: 10 + 3 ability mod + 8 plate +2 enhancement I've logged it as a bug but only had an auto reply so far. Will add a link to this thread. Cheers Richard |
| #17barcoNov 22, 2010 13:27:32 | I'm still not sure if it's is a bug or they just changed the "normal" 4.0 rules. Lack of communication is probably ![]() They are using rules that were published in Heroes of the Fallen Lands by default. At higher level you get extra AC with the magical armor. Check the compendium, they have Magic Armor listed at different levels: --- Magic Armor A set of basic yet effective enchanted armor. Level: 6 Update (8/5/2010) Item updated to match Essentials data. Published in Player's Handbook 1, page(s) 230, Player Essentials 1, page(s) 345. |
| #18RedSiegfriedNov 22, 2010 14:03:22 | That would explain why with +3 Salubrious Plate my Paladin has an AC of 30 instead of 28. Apparently the armor bonus is +10 instead of +8, while the enchancement bonus continues to be +3. I thought it was because it was factoring in the conditional bonus to AC that armor can provide. Sure would be nice if they'd show the calculations in CB ... This also explain's the OP's question I think: My AC Shows as 28 but my calculations give me: You don't get the +1 from Dex because Scale is heavy armor. So ... 10 + half level = 14 Scale Armor +3 = 12 (reference Heroes of the Fallen Lands page 344) Heavy Shield = 2 28 AC I can live with rules changes as long as I know it isn't a bug. Now, how my DM will feel about that I don't know. I have bug report in on this already and I've just updated it asking if this is the reason or not. |
| #19richgreen01Nov 22, 2010 14:25:03 | That could make sense - the power card for the +2 death's brink plate armour says it gives +9 AC and +2 enhancement bonus. Why is this? I don't have Heroes of the Fallen Lands. Richard |
| #20RedSiegfriedNov 22, 2010 15:03:11 | Response from CustServ on my +3 plate report: "Thank you for following up on this. Yes, +3 plate armor starts with an armor bonus of +10 to start, then you add the +3 on top of that, and this is explained on pg. 343 in the Armor section. The table on pg. 344 reflects this. Please let us know if you have any further questions." I guess that answers the question. Still, they should have erratted PH to reflect this. I quote from page 343: "Magic appears at higher levels, and grants higher armor bonuses than its mundane counterpart." The higher bonuses are detailed on page 344. |
| #21richgreen01Nov 22, 2010 15:36:43 | Except that the Essentials Rules Compendium p. 281, gives an example of +5 black iron plate which it adds a total of 13 to the wearer's AC (8 from the plate armor and 5 from the enhancement bonus)! Richard |
| #22rian_kingNov 23, 2010 6:30:28 | I just tried making a paladin and the AC seems correct. It was 1 level paladin wearing plate. I don't know if this makes a different |
| #23RedSiegfriedNov 23, 2010 12:04:16 | Unless it was at least level 6 magic platemail of some type it would still be +8 total AC bonus. +8 armor bonus and +0 enhancement bonus. it doesn't matter what level the character is, just what level the magic armor is. |
| #24RedSiegfriedNov 23, 2010 12:06:08 | Except that the Essentials Rules Compendium p. 281, gives an example of +5 black iron plate which it adds a total of 13 to the wearer's AC (8 from the plate armor and 5 from the enhancement bonus)! Well, unless there exists level 1-5 black iron plate that has an enhancement bonus of +5, that's wrong then, at least according to the way the CB calculates AC. ![]() |
| #25richgreen01Nov 23, 2010 13:57:05 |
Yes, I got an email from WotC customer service saying the Rules Compendium is wrong and that p.344 of Heroes of the Fallen Lands is correct. I guess I need to buy HoFL now! Cheers Richard |
| #26XynthorosDec 01, 2010 14:21:34 | According to heroes of the fallen land, armor increases as you level now... Plate for example has a AC of 8 at levels 1-5, 9 at 6-10, 10 at 11-15, 11 at 16-20, 12 at 21-25, and 14 at 26-30. Cloth has an AC of O from level 1-15, 1 at 16-25, and 2 at 26-30. |
| #27richgreen01Dec 01, 2010 14:28:26 | Only magic armour! And it doesn't increase as a character levels, it's just that some magic armour has a higher armour bonus before the enhancement bonus is added. I've got Heroes of the Forgotten Kingdoms and the rules are in there too (p.344-345) Cheers Richard |
| #28gangstagangJan 05, 2011 1:17:27 | So by taking Meliorating Plate Armor +4(AC 37) and replacing it with Meliorating Specter Plate Armor +4, I should have AC 36? This is what character builder is showing(I reported this problem back with the old character builder, when it was still supported, but they still haven't fixed it.) |
| #290lomas0Sep 26, 2011 1:19:10 | Yea ALL of the problems posted are due to a buggy character builder. Which has almost no support for updates. Just to keep it short i've got a lvl 11 paladin with armor thats +11 and a shield that's +2. both adding to AC. So not counting ANYTHING ELSE. Just adding the base 10 to that gives me a 23 and thats without adding my lvl or any skills I might have to add to that. The builder says I have an armor of 19................... So as "professional" as we all could act and all the "understanding" we could have with the editors of the builder. They released a piece of *insert one of 10 words I could think of here" character builder. But sadly enough i've got three months of this thing to use anyway. But after that i'll get rid of it all and stick to doing it on my own with pen and paper. Maybe someday..... someday. They will actually do what they say they're going to do with all the insider programs. Something my grand kids might enjoy |
| #30sir_anarchDec 19, 2011 15:27:27 | I'm looking at AC and NADs on the CB and as I calculate them, they are a little bit wrong. We are using inherent bonuses and the Builder is calculating them as +1's rather than the +2 I was expecting. I get +2 to attacks, but only +1 fopr defences. Is this correct. The characters are a L8 hybrid Paladin/Warlord and a L8 essentials thief. Same issue on both. I've posted the key parts of the builds below. I don't have DMG2 so no way of checking if Defence advances at the same pace as Attack or not. ====== Created Using Wizards of the Coast D&D Character Builder ====== and... ====== Created Using Wizards of the Coast D&D Character Builder ====== |
