| #1papadoomApr 28, 2012 16:45:52 | I started playing/ DM'ing 4e a few weeks ago, havent played D&D since I was a kid in jr high. Anyway,I went and purchased the core books, minis, MM, Monster vault ,dice, etc etc..also paid for a sub to DDI. But I was having trouble trying to keep track of the monsters and PC's, HP, encounter powers etc. Last night I found the 4e combat manager program (dnd4ecm) and installed it to my laptop to give it a try, perfect!, just what i needed to keep track of everything without having to scribble on sheets of paper scattered all over behind my DM screen. I imported a character file and all the PC's stats and abilities were right there at my fingertips...awesome, no more asking.."you're casting what ..and it does what?"...Then I went to the Monster Builder and attempted to import the monsters i'm using in my campaign into the combat manager in RTF. thats when my disappointment hit, theres no way to copy monster stats from MB. So essentially what would have been this really great DM tool is useless to me. I'd even be willing to pay extra for a really nice, easy to use combat manager where I can actually access the database of monsters and make adjustments to stats as needed. OK I just needed to vent, I see a huge missed opportunity for WoTC here. |

| #3tpkurillaMay 07, 2012 12:36:31 | Welcome back to D&D! We've wanted this ability (and more) for a very long time. Unfortunately, WotC appears to have trimmed their workforce so much, that we don't really get much in the way of new features any more. Even though the rate of books being published has dropped off significantly, and therefore the rate of new elements needing support has dropped off significantly, we have not really seen much in the way of new functionality for months. They claimed that by using the plural in the "Adventure Tools" name, they were foreshadowing "massively great stuff to come!". But we just have not been seeing it. We still just have the singular Monster Builder. This particular version is a significant improvement over its online predecessor, but it was released months ago. So, on the plus side, at least the Monster Builder you have now is actually pretty useful. About the best you can do for you Monster Issues right now, is to go into the Monster Builder and export the monsters you want to use. Then, use XLST (or some such) magic to translate the XML into a form that your tool likes. Anything else is likely to be purely manually done. Hopefully this irritant will be resolved at some point, but I stopped counting on it a while back. WotC just doesn't appear to have the resources truly necessary for their digital dreams to come to fruition. Good Luck! |
