| #1kyros_tachyusAug 01, 2008 21:19:15 | My group needs results now. Quite frankly I'm tired of telling them that if we wait a month or 2 it'll be here or we'll have an update on the status. Wizards has let our group down and I'm sorry to say that I don't think we'll be using your program at all since you'll be charging monthly for it and since you can't seem to deliver on anything you say. Your compendium is a perfect example of that. I'm looking into Fantasy Grounds II as an alternative to DDi and I was wondering what people here say about Fantasy grounds. Would you reccomend it? Is it any good? Buggy? Hard to learn? Any input you guys have on Fantasy Grounds II would be greatly appreciated. I'm extremely dissappointed that I've had to turn away from Wizards to get the results my group and I need. Congratulations! You have, in all likelihood lost me and my whole group (around $1300 a year) as a customer to you incredibly overpriced, overpromised, and underdelivered product. If we like the FG2 system we'll be sticking with that. I'll be hanging around the forums still. Hopefully you can create a good enough product and WAKE UP from your dream about your current pricing plan to bring us back. Please, fellow forum goers, tell me what you think of FG2. |
| #2DralenanAug 01, 2008 21:32:12 | I use Maptool for my group, and as a player I find it works, but DMing with ti is a challenge. I never used FG though. |
| #3kyros_tachyusAug 01, 2008 21:51:11 | Thanks, I'll look into Maptool. Is it free? Still looking for FG2 input. |
| #4DralenanAug 01, 2008 23:47:05 | It's free, I think it's www.rptools.net. |
| #5WolfStar76Aug 02, 2008 8:10:13 | Thanks, I'll look into Maptool. Is it free? I haven't used FG2 with 4E yet, though I keep hearing there's a nice ruleset/charactersheet out there. As far as the table itself goes, I've been VERY happy with FG/FG2 - and that includes my playing back in the early days when the software was very buggy and would crash for no (apparent) reason. I've tinkered with several game tables, and FG has been the only one that I felt like sticking with. |
| #6EberronknightAug 02, 2008 12:10:36 | This month is it for my group for 3.5, after falling in love with 4th Ed character generation! (that was easy!) I'll be moving away from my core group next month, if the DDI isn't up by Gen Con, I'm going to have to do the same. I'm checking out FG2 right now to see what it can do. Unbelievable WOTC, the last month... nothing on the progress of the DDI. ![]() EK |
| #7mdock2003Aug 02, 2008 13:39:28 | to say I am disappointed by WotC's poor showing with DDi would be an understatement. |
| #8dmjboneAug 02, 2008 18:54:42 | Well, you've seen my post: http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=1055097 My group is currently using FG2 with Teamspeak running a 4E rules set (fan created). It's wonderful. I couldn't recommend it highly enough. There's a great community of passionate people over on the FG boards that'll help you out. Make sure to see Xorn's wonderful module creation tutorial: https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8586 Happy gaming. |
| #9EugeeAug 02, 2008 20:01:09 | I've been playing D&D over FG2 since September 07, actually. http://www.eugee.net/images/fg/20080317.1.jpg There's a shot of a game from March 08, one of our first games using the pre-release rules compilation. http://www.eugee.net/kots/kots.7a.jpg Suffice to say our current games have not decreased in ass-kickering. ![]() |
| #10PobmanAug 04, 2008 6:10:24 | I've been playing D&D over FG2 since September 07, actually. I know I could probably just go to their website to find this infor out, but as we're discussing Fantasy Grounds in this thread and I'm lazy, I wanted to ask a question about pricing. I assume each person in the group has to buy a copy of Fantasy Grounds. Does the DM have to pay more than the players or does each person pay exactly the same (I didn't know whether the DM has more complicated software that entailed a higher price)? Any other price info would be welcome. |

Dm pays more, but there's a discount for buying multiple licenses at a time.. your whole group can chip in and get a better deal than they could buying individually. |
| #12EugeeAug 04, 2008 9:09:27 | Dm pays more, but there's a discount for buying multiple licenses at a time.. your whole group can chip in and get a better deal than they could buying individually. At the time my group all got FG2, I was DMing and there were 6 players. For 1 DM Client and 6 Player Clients, we paid $90 USD with the group discount. $12.86 each. That's less than DDi costs month-to-month. We own the software forever, too. |

| #14icedcrowAug 04, 2008 10:11:12 | Indeed. And we can start getting groups together NOW. |
| #15icedcrowAug 04, 2008 10:14:17 | Also... where does one obtain the 4th edition custom rulesets for Fantasy Grounds? |
| #16KentinalAug 04, 2008 14:58:18 | Also... where does one obtain the 4th edition custom rulesets for Fantasy Grounds? This might be a copyright problem for any to provide a website providing the database. The last ruling I read might make it legal, however that ruling was some years ago. |
| #17icedcrowAug 04, 2008 15:03:48 | Ok fair enough. I know I have to keep my character generator private for the same reason. I have little experience with FG. Ok...I have no experience. Can I make my own ruleset to work with 4e? |
| #18dmjboneAug 04, 2008 15:29:16 | Happy to see the interest in FG2; but really should take this off the WOTC boards out of respect for these topics. Head over to www.fantasygrounds.com and check it out-boards are at: http://www.fantasygrounds.com/community/ |
| #19KentinalAug 04, 2008 15:31:34 | Ok fair enough. I know I have to keep my character generator private for the same reason. It appears "Fair Use" allows you to make your own data/rule set from material you own and of course add in House rules as desired.. |
| #20icedcrowAug 04, 2008 15:35:53 | I meant does the software allow me to make a 4th edition version. |
| #21WolfStar76Aug 04, 2008 16:10:58 | I meant does the software allow me to make a 4th edition version. FG uses XML and LUA scripting. You can create your own rulesets for any RPG (from 4th Edition to Gurps). So yes, FG will allows that kind of customization. |
| #22KentinalAug 04, 2008 16:11:14 | I meant does the software allow me to make a 4th edition version. FG as a company providing such a tool likely would be sued by WotC with odds on WotC winning damages. The Software of FG does appear to allow for DM customization of rules so you should be able to encode your own rules, even if all of them are from WotC text. You might want to check FG website and your attorney to see what is legal now. |
| #23herucaAug 06, 2008 23:08:55 | Try Battlegrounds. The link is in my sig. Normally you have to pay a small one-time fee for a license, but from now until August 16th it can be used for free. |
| #24coveredinbeeeesAug 07, 2008 3:08:41 | What do Battlegrounds and FG offer for a fee that RPTools don't offer for free? I've been running a game using Maptool, Initiativetool and Skype/Ventrillo for just over a year now and I'd love to hear from anyone who has tried and compared BG, FG and Mapool. |
| #25herucaAug 07, 2008 9:02:10 | What do Battlegrounds and FG offer for a fee that RPTools don't offer for free? Now would be an ideal time to explore that question, since it's free for a while.;) But here's a quick rundown of Battlegrounds' features. |
| #26coveredinbeeeesAug 07, 2008 11:49:23 | That's handy to know. Cheers. |
| #27EugeeAug 07, 2008 15:09:45 | It should be noted that the 4th Edition ruleset for FG2 currently in use does not contain one single iota of information that would allow you to play 4E D&D. What it does have is a series of fields that accept user-input numbers and text, and calculates formulas on some of those number fields. If you don't have the books, you have absolutely nothing to play 4E D&D with just because you have this ruleset. The name should be '4E Compatible Templates'. There's a blank character sheet, blank npc sheet, blank item sheet, and blank combat/initiative tracker sheet. Unless WotC recently found a way to copyright the words "hit" and "points", or basic math, they have no rights to say anything about a blank character sheet that doesn't use their copyrighted logos and trademarks. Just go to the fantasy grounds forums and you will very quickly find the ruleset that fans created for 4E. Again it contains no rules or text from the books--it does not violate copyright laws anymore than a hand written blank character sheet does. |
| #28alaiacAug 07, 2008 22:32:33 | My group and I use FGII and the 4E_JPG ruleset. Since having gotten used to it and its idiosyncrasies we are not even considering the DDI VTT app. I like the cross-platform functionality of BG, although it is not the most elegant of programs, it was certainly robust enough. In the end, however, the interface and the news that someone was going to be working on a 4E capable ruleset sold us on FGII. Those of us who found it necessary all had access to boot camp and Windows, so the Windows-only issues didn't become the sticking point it could have been. Also, FG2's module export feature has been fantastic for the compiling of a MM that I do not have to re-do each time I start a new campaign. |
| #29khamlesAug 07, 2008 22:47:12 | I agree, I'm extremely disappointed with the lack of communication and will likely use fgII in lieu of ddi. FG had some problems when it was being started. It was a bit buggy, but fortunately the company listened to what their community had to say and the program got much better very quickly. I bought in exactly 1 time on version 1 for FG and have been happily playing version two on the same dime. I recommend it highly. |
| #30kyros_tachyusAug 08, 2008 0:06:44 | Thanks very much for all the responses. I'm going to wait until Gen Con is over to make my final decision. Would love more feedback though.:D |
| #31ghostintheshellAug 08, 2008 3:02:27 | Open RPG is free and has less bugs than DDI will ever achieve. I have known the owner of the company that did Etools. WOTC isn't too smart about hiring software developers (their lead just was involved in a murder) so just give up on DDI. Ghostintheshell |
| #32icedcrowAug 08, 2008 8:44:54 | We went to Fantasy Grounds II as well. It just feels right. I like how it runs. I like what it does. Yeah you have to pay a one time fee for it, but it's not a monthly fee. Yeah you don't get the ability to run things in 3D, but really one wonders whether or not DDI will even happen, so I'm fine running in 2D. Also you can customize your own tokens and portraits. There is a great community that offers tutorials and all kinds of help. In the beginning, I was stoked about DDI. It's failure bummed me out, but the failure brought me to FG2 and honestly after messing with it, I have no desire to mess with DDI, especially not if I have to pay a monthly fee for it, when I now own a copy of FG2 forever and it does just as much as DDI will ever do minus the 3D content. |
| #33EugeeAug 14, 2008 20:24:10 | Well said, Icedcrow. And believe me, the tutorials are out there for folks nervous about getting used to using FG2. As a matter of fact, I just made a bunch of them. ![]() |
| #34arnvid2008Aug 15, 2008 16:18:45 | Actually, my gaming group is still slogging its way through "Mysteries of the Moonsea" and we still have not started Paizo's Savage Tide Adventure Path, so I suppose my group has the "luxury(?)" of waiting until DDI goes "live". |
