| #1catsclawJun 23, 2009 23:03:44 | I'm here at Origins, trying to make some last minute fixes in pregen characters for tomorrow. This requires installing the character builder on my laptop computer. No problem.
By 6:00, I've downloaded the installer. By 6:30, I've canceled the install and manually downloaded .NET 3.5. By 6:45, I've installed .NET and the character builder. I run it, and download updates. It is now 11:45. The updater still has 15% left to go.
What's the best part of this process? The ****-poor download speeds? The fact I couldn't just download the updated program in the first place? The fact whoever designed the interface decided to add a progress bar, but not one that updates often enough to prove it hasn't died in the last 15 minutes? How about the fact that the update failed for me a few times earlier this month, so I'm worried if I do cancel it I'll be locked out of updating for two weeks? Yes, I'm sure there's probably something the hotel's networking is screwing up with the filesharing protocol used for updates. If I had been properly prepared, I would have remembered this is the company that can't even manage to remove the huge This will not extend your membership warning when they launch their big "Extend your membership" promotion. But I was sick with the flu for two weeks, and rushed to get out the door this morning. Still, a hearty "Thanks!" for wasting the last 5 hours I had to properly edit these characters. Can this process finally be fixed? |

I can tell you that it doesn't use up an install for the month if you cancel an update or something. A computer doesn't use a second install usually unless you do something weird like erase the hard drive or delete windows. |
